Sounds like Radio Shack is about to go under.

Yep. Sad thing is that their business model was similar to Walgreen's. Have a shop on every corner. Now, since online ordering is becoming the rage, RS is essentially competing against itself.

I honestly thought they went out of business a while ago like blockbuster. Can't remember the last time I went in or even thought about a RadioShack. The internet killed a lot of things.

Surprised this didn't happen years ago. What do you buy in their that you could not buy in a big box store or online for a much cheaper price?

Is the music store in St Matthews mall still open? Place should have closed a month after opening. CD's and DVD's insanely over priced. You might be able to find Con Air DVD for 24.99. Used movies might be 12.99.

I stopped shopping at Radio Shack years ago. Once they started making me fill out a survey and provide a DNA sample just to buy a battery I was out. Any transaction with them took 20 minutes at the register. I blame them for the moronic member rewards card system that we have to put up with now. So they can go to hell....they can go to hell and die!

The one in Paintsville closed last summer. All I ever bought there was the little batteries for my key fobs or maybe some special battery for electrical testers I have. Every thing else they had, you could buy for half-price at Wal-Mart.

Is a Radio Shack store still located in Middlesboro?
Yeah, still there.

Not sure for how much longer though.

Radio shack should have sold or liquidated at least 5 years ago.

Best Buy is experiencing a resurgence of sorts after adopting an instore hassle free price match of any online vendors.

My last trip to Radio Shack was for a phone battery. Their price was fifty bucks and they were out so it would be a few days. Amazon was fourteen with two day delivery. Guess which one I bought.

I will give them credit for cell phones. They sell for several carriers and have better deals than the carrier locations. Also, they can answer questions, unlike the people at any other third party seller.

they used to have an excellent collection of electronic components. last time i went (about a 1.5y ago) i couldn't even find basic transistors. radio shack evolved into a shitty version of best buy.

End of an Era....sad. Back in the 90s, I had 30+ Shacks + 600+ Main Street Mom & Pop electronics dealers I supported PrimeStar sales for. and with this news...99.9% of them are gone.

Consolidation sucks...BRING BACK THE MOM AND POPS!!!

I hope you're right, since I enjoy shopping there. However, their inventory seems to have dropped quite a bit lately.

I don't think there are enough hobbyists around anymore to make money selling those kinds of electronic components to consumers. Those days are long gone. My first color TV was a Heathkit that I built myself. I would never go through something like that again.

That's pretty touching impressive.

Yeah, I thought that went the way of blockbuster too. I don't care about Radio Shack but I am bothered by DVD/CD stores dying. Red box only has brand new releases and you have to wait forever for something to hit Netflix. I enjoyed browsing around at collections to find any hidden gems. Granted you can get everything on Amazon but you have to know what you're looking for.

I know FYE is starting to phase out and runs a lot of stores called 'Second Spin' which specializes in buying back and selling used CDs/DVDs. That whole model will be dead within a handful of years.

Geek Squad and ability to buy just about any consumer-type computer right now instantly is a huge benefit to Best Buy.

But WTF do you go to Radio Shack for? Best Buy has everything Radio Shack has in one aisle of their store.

That's weird since I just bought a fuse there in 1974. I thought for sure that would help them out some. Nice people.

They were extremely close to going under for a stretch.

I bought my son a video game there right before Christmas. Pulled up the online ad on my phone for $39.99 (Best Buy price was $59.99). In less than 5 minutes they price matched, I paid, and was on my way. I was really prepared for a hassle because of the eye opening discount, and Id hated Best Buy for years since they screwed me on a few rebates. But I came away impressed.

The one in Harlan still oped? They used to have a real nice CB selection other than the Radio Shack line. Going back 25 years or longer though.

Not sure about Harlan.

But the one in Corbin is gone, as well as the one in New Tazewell, TN.

It's still hard to get them to pay the sales tax though which I normally don't pay online.

you have to pay tax for online purchases regardless, it's called "use tax" when you file.

Circuit city went under, as well as a number of other electronics store chains across the country. Best buy has shuttered a number of their stores as well, yet HH Gregg is building two new stores in louisville alone, and I HATE HH Gregg. They are the kings of bait and switch. But what are they doing right that all the other chains are flunking at?

actually I believe Best Buy is doing a lot better. There was talk of them going under but seems like they are surviving quite well. Their store pickup needs some work. Last time I went in to pick up my item, I could have gone and grabbed it off the shelf and went through the empty line by the time I got my store pickup.

Radio Shack just never learned to evolve. Retailers like Macy's and Best Buy are taking advantage of the Internet with advanced inventory management and better online website experiences.

They are what Walgreens is to Walmart, except they don't have the cash cow of pharmaceuticals that Walgreens has. Sad because they carry a lot of specified parts that Best Buy doesn't.
