SOT: Cassidy Rowe leaving Kentucky WBB; ending basketball career.

We don’t know the whole story yet. I agree it doesn’t sound like a Kenny Brooks or a Mitch to force a player out.
For all of barnhart's piousness and griping about NIL it's first few years and kids leaving in the portal, he's always been okay with the adults pushing out kids. He let his guy mingione wipe out nearly the entire baseball team one off season in the first year of the portal to take a stab at saving his job, which he was able to do.

Do the majority of her teammates love her, hate her, or are they indifferent to see her go?

In women's sports, girls can be ostracized very quickly if the majority of the other girls are jealous and/or disagree with their social stances/politics in current times.

Let me point something out: https://ukathletics.com/sports/wbball/roster/ - If you look at the roster for this past season's team on UKAthletics, there is only one player that has a NIL label next to her name. That player is Cassidy Rowe. She has received more NIL opportunities locally than the other girls because she is the only player from Kentucky and she is beloved by fans because of it. It's not because she's one of the most important contributors to the team, and that alone could be a distraction through no fault of her own.

If she was truly forced out, then it wasn't due to a scholarship crunch. Did the coaching staff like her or was there drama behind the scenes? We'll probably never know the full story. Regardless, Cassidy Rowe appears to have a bright future ahead of her.

This is the harsh reality of a new coach, the portal and NIL. It’s a business. A new coach needs players that fit his system. You have to take emotions out of it.

E Everyone agrees but only to an extent. There are 15 scholarships. She is a sr thats off the books next year regardless.

Maaaayyyybe if we had 14 scholarships used up and a game changer wanted to commit. Otherwise there is zero reason to push out a sr. Especially an in state sr.

I don’t think any of us know how many scholarship players we have for next year. If she really wanted to stay she could have agreed to give up her scholarship and be a walk-on.

whether Brooks is justified or not, its a PR disaster for him.

I never heard of Cassidy Rowe until 2 days ago. And now what I know is Brooks is a jerk thanks to social media.

that's clearly not true and there has to be more to the story but how its been handled is not good

If true shame on Coach Brooks. UK could do better.
Sadly this is the world of college basketball. She wasn’t his recruit and he was hired to pull a program out of ruins. I am sure she wasnt content to practice and not play. Coaching changes are always hard on returning players unless you are a star. They want to build their team. It happens everywhere. She should go play for Eastern or Morehead or maybe even Pikeville college near home if she wants to keep playing otherwise get a degree and enjoy life without basketball. It is a fleeting journey any way.

Pretty crappy move especially by a new coach
Why doesn't his boss step in?
Even ccc didn't pull this stunt
He most certainly did. He gutted the roster when he first got here. He also didn’t recruit many KY kids. Fact is, Rowe was a KE recruit not KB. She probably never gets recruited if KB is coaching here for her HS seasons.

KB was probably in a no win situation. People are angry he asked her to transfer. Let’s change the situation. Let’s say he keeps her and she doesn’t play. People are mad she isn’t playing and question why did he keep her if she wasn’t going to play while saying things like he should have told her she wasn’t going to play so she could’ve transferred.

Unfortunately, as head coach he has to make these hard decisions as his job is determined by wins and losses. KB feels another player gives him a better chance to do that. This is big girl basketball. If people don’t like things like this, we should’ve kept Kyra Elzy.

KE was MM main recruiter. She may not have been HC but she very much recruited her.
It doesn't matter. I'm going to give the credit to Mitchell though. You can give the credit to people like Vince Marrow in football because the roster is so big, but in basketball, the head coach always has to seal the deal.

Her minutes were down this year, and it was easy to see why- there were better players on the team. People understood it and I heard no one being angry. I really hate the idea of EVER pushing out a player going into their senior year. She played three years and you've deprived her the opportunity to play for her entire college career here. She was denied the opportunity to go through senior night. Kenny Brooks screwed up here. Plain and simple.

Some news outlet interviewed her and her dad right after KB was hired. I wish I could find the story. But she and dad were excited about KB because he coaches a style that they believed would result in her getting more minutes.

I'd like clarification on the "Asked to transferred thing". She was getting alot of minutes to start the season and just didn't produce. She definitely would have been a practice player next season and maybe she didn't want to ride the bench and never see time. Hence the "ask".

It happens in every program. Cal did it. Stoops has done it. Mingione did it. Craig Skinner has done it. Dawn Staley and Kim Mulkey has done it. That’s who you want to compete against. If you want to be a big time program, you have to do things like this. If you don’t, then we should’ve kept Kyra Elzy.

It’s also possible that KB was trying to do right by her since she is gonna be a senior. Maybe he thought enough about her as a person to let her know so she could transfer somewhere where she would play as a senior or at the very least go out on her terms. None of us truly know how the discussion went down and neither do the people with “sources” unless they were part of the meeting.

She’s essentially given up her scholarship. I’d imagine if she could walk on she would.

If your 15th roster spot is determining your wins and losses regularly you’ve got major problems.

Did she really want to walk on? No one knows except her, her family, and the team.

Did she want to be the 15th man AND give up a scholly in the same year? She would be THAT girl on the team.

I think folks are confused:
1. Being pushed off of the team straight away
2. Not liking the options presented to you, being reminded that you could transfer and then deciding to leave.

These are not the same.

She made a social media post today saying she's off the team but not transferring. She's going to finish her Education at Kentucky.

So, she's not even leaving the school. Which would certainly imply she was told she's off the team.

She’s essentially given up her scholarship. I’d imagine if she could walk on she would.
If the rest of the team has a problem with her, then it's up to the coach to say, "I'm sorry, I can't allow this to continue and be a distraction." That would be one of the only things that makes sense in this situation. She's not a star player, so it would be easier to sacrifice her than to sacrifice team chemistry.

These hypotheticals of her walking-on and being a manager are based on the assumption that she is even wanted around on a daily basis by coaches and teammates. Is she? We don't know.

I’m going out on a limb and say this isn’t as black and white as the local bloggers who probably have a bias toward the fact Rowe is a Kentucky born player.

I would garner Brooks was honest with her and said if you want to play significant minutes you’ll need to transfer. You aren’t getting them here. Rowe didn't want to transfer. She’s engaged and about to graduate with a masters. I’m sure her NIL agreements are tied to her playing basketball, probably more so at Kentucky than anywhere else. Walk on status probably doesn’t include that, so she made a business decision to walk away.

No one would care if she wasn’t from KY. Being from KY doesn’t entitle her to anything. She had a year to prove that she warrants a spot on the roster and the coaches don’t think she did. If we are being honest, many new coaches would’ve let her go last year. Brooks at least gave her an opportunity. This isn’t junior basketball where everyone gets a trophy.

People keep saying "Kenny probably told he she wouldn't play if she stayed." SHE IS STAYING AT THE COLLEGE. It's pretty clear what happened.
That’s because she made the decision to stay at the university. He was being upfront about the situation so she could get out and front to transfer to another school so she could play for her senior year. She chose not to so she couple stay in the UK PT program.

It says she won't be entering the portal in the post.

My brother makes somewhere around 130K in Sacramento as a DPT. She won't be hurting for money. Hell, she'll probably make more than most WNBA players.

Best wishes to her.
I know 130k sounds good in Kentucky, but is it really that much in California?

Three years of not being wanted around even under a coaching change seems far fetched.

Total PR disaster. A lot of it is the vagueness of her social media post. But I wonder if it’s a situation where she asked if there would be playing time for her and was told no. Then was told if she wanted to see the court, she’d need to transfer. Then rather putting in all the work on top of school, she decided it was best not to play. He may have told her she could stay on the team but she chose not to ride the pine.

I had a player ask what they could do to see floor time and told him he needed to work on his body to get stronger and get in better shape. He told his parents I said if he was fat and if he didn’t drop 20lbs he couldn’t play. Thank God they didn’t go to social media and pop off before talking to me and letting me explain.

Let’s do this. It’s Noah’s senior year. And Pope says transfer or be off the team. You don’t think that would be a dumb as hell PR move?

I agree being from KY doesn’t entitle you to jack. But you also don’t treat seniors the same way you would sophomores or freshman.

This has the same vibes of working somewhere for 15 years and they call you in on Friday and say, “Well you’re done. Oh an by the way no severance”. Thats a shitty move no matter the job or industry.

It reads like you're agreeing with my point.

People are acting like Kenny didn't revoke her scholarship; that he probably told her she wouldn't get much playing time. If she's staying at Kentucky, but not on the team, then he actually chose not to renew her scholarship.

Exactly. And getting the boot this early is even worse. Like I posted above, i can maybe go with it if we had our roster filled and a great talent wanted to hop on board but needed a ride.

Shes a sr, we have extra scholarships - should've let her stay even with a reduced role.

Respectfully, This wouldn't make any sense.

If she stays on the team and keeps her scholarship--she would get free college. She posted saying she wants to go to PT school. Why wouldn't she stay on the team and keep the scholarship? She's so upset over no minutes that she's going to pay for her own college?

If Kenny was going to let her stay on the team, she would have. I could buy the narrative that he told her she wouldn't get to play again next year, so she decided to transfer. I can't buy she's staying at UK and chose not to keep her scholarship because it meant riding the bench. That makes no sense.
