So we basically are platooning.

looks like we are basically platooning for the most part without a ton of drop off between the units.
He’s certainly playing 10 players right now. Looks like a few sub in based on situation, then the others check in around the 15:00 mark.

Pope has said some interesting things about stamina and fatigue. The tech they’re using now is showing most players are able to go 5 mins without a drop off in production. He’s hoping to get that up to 6:30-7:00 mins by mid season. Thought it was interesting to hear his take on how going past that point leads to more ankle injuries.

The man is all into analytics. It’s hard to argue against scientific facts. It’ll be interesting to see if he stays with that same 10 man rotation against Duke.

I dont think that will last later into the season. Easy to work on situations when you're up 30. You'll get guys that will get a few minutes here and there.

This was first game,( after 1 legit and 2 warm-ups) that the team seemed to run as smooth without Butler and Oweh on the court. Kirisa finally stepped up. B and O had a bit of drop off. And Brea showed up as our best shooter. Last two Robinson has been good but not great. Chandler still too anxious puppy dog, and should be the first of the ten to drop off minutes in big games. Our kentucky boys will get mop-up duty only.

Pope is using data that tracks performance to determine when players need a break and are no longer performing at their best. We will play 10 players, but we aren’t platooning. It is situational or based on who needs a break, while maintaining a balanced team of 5 on the court at all times.

Calipari was obsessed with Wooden apparently telling him that you shouldn’t play more than 7 players real minutes. That worked great in 1970 when you were buying the top 7 players on the country. In the real world of you have 10 equally good players you should play them all because other teams will be tired when you are fresh.

Not sure how that will stick as the season wears on, but it looks like we are basically platooning for the most part without a ton of drop off between the units.
I like platooning. And platooning DORS NOT necessarily mean both groups have to play equal minutes. In a tough game it could be 26-14 or whatever Pope wants.

Works for me, it actually worked for Cal back in 2015 but he was afraid he could not recruit if he continued. If you have 10 plus players who can be interchanged without much or any talent drop off, I say go for it. Foul trouble becomes less of a problem, fatigue and player drop off due to being tired is less of a problem. I like this team and how he works this line up.

Not platooning. But we are running 10 deep with meaningful minutes. As the competition gets tougher, I see us still running a solid 8 deep.
If you have a deep bench then that’s an advantage you can use to exploit most other opponents. But only if you use it, which means playing a style and intensity level which accentuates the advantage.

If you choose to leave them on the bench then your giving away your advantage.

I frankly never understood the appeal of tightening your rotation in cases where you have quality talent rotting away on the bench.

We are bringing in a whole new five each time?
No, we are not. But, our second 5 are getting plenty of minutes, and I think it will play into our favor big time in the long run. It's not exactly platooning right now but we do have 10 solid players so foul trouble and possible injuries coukd be marginalized by this group. Plus, everything we hear from these guys is about team VS individuals. Brea came off the bench to lead the team in scoring tonight hitting 6 3's. After the game he said he doesn't care about coming off the bench rather than starting and says he's a coach's player and will do what it takes for the team. That's what makes me think this team coukd advance far in March.

Nothing close to platooning. He tinkered first two games. You’ll see it shorten Tuesday. The starters, Brea, and Kriisa will get the lions share of the mins. My guess is, unless foul trouble or injury dictates differently, Garrison and Almonor will play 10-12 mins and Chandler even less than that.

The rotation will change a little bit Tue. The current rotation has almost been exactly 5 mins at a time for 9-10 players leading to 8 players being around 18-22 mins. However, this has allowed the first two games to end with 4-5 bench players, then Trent and Perry getting 3-4 mins to conclude the game.

I’m guessing Tuesday’s rotation will include earlier rotation in the 2nd half so he has the players he wants fresh and ready to close the game.

it was cool to see the second five out there together. Pope could easily platoon. We are a legit two deep at every position.

This team is probably built better to platoon than 2015 was. Cal played guys out of position (mainly Lyles at SF) to make it work. No one is playing out of position on this team.

Yes and you can win 38 games in a row doing it but it might affect recruiting.... At least that's what Cow thought. So he never did it again.
I say it makes your team the strongest it can possibly be. You wear teams down.

I never did believed in that it hurt recruiting ? Our former coach was just using that as an excuse.
