What's so funny is that these kids really thought their arrival to their teams would really make them a national title contender. Now they realize they drank the kool-aid

You've got to really want to be at UK to have a chance to thrive here. They didn't so they're better off where they are.

***Cal's (8-2) now. We'll get a better idea if they've progressed at all since their back-to-back losses to San Diego State & Richmond when they play UVA in about a week.

I'd say Brown's doing better than Newman.....averaging ~ 14.5, 5.5 on 41% shooting compared to 12 & 3 on 38.5% shooting.

yea, brown is having a good freshman year. problem is you don't really hear anything about him. Cal is doing ok but even win Arizona was awesome a year or two ago you barely heard talk about em.

Actually Cal ain't bad and they will make a little noise this year and be a tourney team for sure IMO so I can't be too mad at Brown since he was a different cat from the beginning . But Newman ? C'mon man . C'mon ! Miss St is one of the worst d1 teams in the land .

Newman has been very unremarkable this far. His draft stock will take a huge hit if his game doesn't improve imo like josh selby

So lets put down a kid because they didn't pick UK. How adult of you to do that. I'm sure these kids are pushed to go elsewhere or lied to. Not everyone needs to come here.

I hold nothing against these kids and really never have given them a thought until I saw this thread. If they do fine, that's great, but I'm not concerning myself with them at all.
Me too

Briscoe was already committed when Newman chose MSU.
I know but some say it cost us Newman and were pissed. A certain poster lost their mind on here. Not to mention he has deflected his anger towards Murray now

these kind of posts always make me shake my head. how many kids when they are picking a school say winning a national title is the goal? like all. they all basically fail. its just something they say. college is just a pit stop. its not the end all be all fans think it is.

Playing at a program like Kentucky is a special opportunity that only will come once in a lifetime. I don't think I have to repeat all that is involved, but the experience is way different that being at most of these other schools. Some kids get it and others who may have ego issues don't. They may be great talent, but if their ego is such that they have to be or believe they alone will be a difference maker than they wouldn't be a good fit anyway.

Cals best win is over St Mary who somehow has a RPI of 14? Cals is 80 something, not really even quite on the bubble. The hell with em anyway...

Yea...I'm really making fun of them...lol. I'm making a point.

My point is the bologna they some of the elite recruits were fed last year was crazy. Let them do what they want...but I hope future recruits take notice that it takes more than just talent to be good. You have to have talent, but you have to have coaching to get it out of them. Some of these kids were told if they come to X school then X school becomes a potential final 4 team. But it's just not that simple in college basketball.

Cal doesn't get near the credit he deserves for taking talent & actually winning & having success in the NCAA tourney with young talent. Something the Baylor's, Memphis', LSU's & Kansas' (better this year) have not been doing.

They will get paid next year. I think they are still winning.

So...you don't think Malik Newman's decision to attend MSU affects his draft status? Ha, ha!! And I'm the easter bunny.

If he came to UK & had a mediocre year that would not have hurt his draft status near as much as attending MSU & having a mediocre year.

I've wanted to catch a Cal game this year but man...west coast basketball may as well not even exist. Hard to stay up to watch a game that starts at 10 on a weekday. Plus a lot of the games are on the PAC-12 channel which I don't have or want to pay for. I don't know why any high level kid would want to play out west knowing national exposure is pretty much nonexistent.

They made a great choice for them and I doubt they have any regrets , they didn't pick UK because of over obsessive fans like op

Brown and Newman are both happy with their decisions. Therefore, I don't really care. All 3 of our guards are scoring at higher averages than Newman, and Brown is having himself a good year, and I'm sure he'll be drafted in the lottery.

Both UK and those two benefit from their decisions.

Really? They have an OOC SOS of 285 and have still managed to lose twice and look rough in many of their great wins. Cupcake city.

His decision to attend a school other than UK? No.

UK isn't the only path to the NBA

Or they didn't want to come to a place where after a couple bad games you are writing the kid off as a project, a 3 year player, a NBA bust, someone who shouldn't get playing time, or all of the other things people have said on this board about our prize recruit..there's always that.

It'll be interesting to see where they end up in the draft. I really haven't heard much about either, from the talking heads. The big difference in coming to UK or going this route is the overall exposure. I honestly haven't seen one Cal game hyped on ESPN, and Miss St is just an SEC network afterthought. As opposed to where UK is having preseason practices aired, on national tv.

Obviously if a kid can ball he will be seen and picked up. It's just coming to UK gets you a ton more exposure and in a way lets a kid get a head start on crafting his own brand. That can lead to more $ on that first contract. I have respect for kids who want to carve their own niche, but their can be consequences with it as well.

Fixed....;)

So true , come get some of this nifty support . You get support here if you do well , if not then you get ran down . No doubt they are missing that big time .

They're getting plenty of press, and in about 8 months will be going in the draft.

IF it were me, I would love to pick a place that has historic tradition and a likely chance at being a contender for a national title. As it stands, they’re not me, and I'm sure they're enjoying their college time.

as if the players read these forums or even some hack posting his articles on them for that matter

How much more credit do you think he needs? It's talked about every year by other coaches and media. He was also just inducted in the HOF, an accolade he probably wouldn't have received yet if he had not come to UK. His success with the one and done ( and the direct results of those one and dones) at UK is one of the main reasons he was put in HOF, imo.

I think it comes off as salty when our fans bring up the failures of recruits that didn't come here (especially 1/3 into season). To be fair, has there been a bigger individual disappointment, in all of college basketball at this point in the year, than Skal?

It's just so rare that a recruit, let alone a SINGLE recruit can be a game changer. Look at Ben Simmons, He's doing it all and LSU is STILL at .500 ball. These kids think they are just going to walk into the college game and dominate games for wins. It's never that easy.

Let Newman and Brown be a lesson to any recruits watching: If you want the ball every time down the court, and want the minutes, then please, do both of us a favor, and go elsewhere. If you want to win and a chance to compete late in the season, then you pick schools like Kentucky Kansas and Duke.

I think their decisions benefited them just as much as they benefited UK.
