So Cal draws the worst Kansas team in memory and the one guy he gets motivated to play against in the second round...figures

The fluky thing is Kansas was on track to win that game most likely until KJ Adams went down. They had all of the momentum and then he went down and it changed from there.

St John's had little to no outside shooting tonight. They lived all season on ferocious defense. Just couldn't score when the time came.
Wonderful coaching job that managed to cover the scoring problems. Master class in fact. Today it just fell short.

He was'nt motivated to do squat the last four years he was here...

Plus st johns is a team undersized and cant shoot.

This was literally a perfect bracket for him. Two coaches that motivate him and neither has a team that can shoot.

I see some hog fans this morning crowing. The real question they should be asking is why our uber talented team had such a sh1t year to warrant a 10 seed.

Just let it go. He is who he is. He’s in the sweet sixteen. I love our coach and our program. Done with all of the cal post. He’s gone

I just hope we make it. I know Pope got his first NCAAT win, but I really don't want to see Cal make it and Pope close up shop for the year after getting that notch in his belt. We had to watch Cal walk into Rupp and hand us our ass, then go and figure out how to beat KU and STJ in one weekend.

If they win to make the E8, and we lose to UT, that's fine. But not getting out of the first weekend (again) while Cal and his Hogs march on will be a tough pill to swallow.

It’s just tournament luck. He had it here early in his tenure and it dried up bad the last few years.

He gets clowned when a random white dude hits 10 3s on his team and the national media kiss his butt when SJ goes 2-22 from 3. Just how it is.

Only 3 teams in the second round are/were bigger favorites than St. John’s. It’s funny how some folks hate Cal so much they try to make it look like the Johnnies were the Washington Generals. Someone yesterday said this is the worst tournament team Pitino has ever had. A 2 seed. Heh

Agreed!

I mean tournament luck applies to every coach though pretty much.

Tubby was super lucky against Duke n 98 (and Stanford) but then couldn't get a break the rest of tenure.

Pitino had terrible luck n close games and then finally had a team with so much talent he couldn't screw it up n 96 but then had bad luck n 97 in the final.

And on and on.

I hate to say it, but CCC has the talent and a newfound ability to coach. He just might win the whole damn thing.

That’s my point. Narratives are largely formed off tournament luck. Cal didn’t forget how to coach the last 5 years and this also isn’t “the best coaching job of his career” that media folks are touting.

There’s also just luck in the bracket itself. We all were concerned with getting a 3 seed instead of a 4 seed yet Purdue got a 4 seed and didn’t have to play a team with a pulse the first two games while getting an insane draw for the Indy regional.

I've seen st Johns play 3 or 4 times this year and this was by far the worst they've looked. I'm hoping the Illini do the same for us tomorrow.
I've seen St. John's play most of the year-and this is how they looked more than 60% of the time. Pitino doesn't pull any punches and he kept saying as clear as day what they needed to do to win. Problem was the key player was awful (Richmond) and their best offensive player shot like crap (which isn't shocking).

Big East was not an elite conference this year. The outrage when Dan Hurley responded to the question of how far St. John's can go in NCAA's after losing to them at MSG with "They have Championship level defense but their going to have to make more shots because you can't win with defense alone" proved to be not liking the messenger rather than listening to the message. He was labeled a hater, etc...and it's funny because it came from a guy who openly stated after flaming out with a "defense wins" approach that he needed more shooting/offense to advance.

Steve Lappas (who with Andrew Catalon is arguably the top team broadcasting CBB IMO) called out every aspect of the game correctly. Mentioned how St. John's won't be able to get away with what they did all year in a down year for the Big East...and low and behold..they couldn't dominate the paint...they got shots blocked and they didn't turn over Arkansas because Hogs had as many athletes. Arkansas size bothered St. John's and Pitino got rattled and benched his best offensive player because.....he got shook. Love Pitino as a Coach and what he did this year shouldn't be putdown due to the outcome, should be celebrated more. That said, he gets rattled big time when facing Cal and hearing RJ Luis call him out after the game for his demeanor was eye opening. Times got tough and this team that went on Jimmy Fallon and had time to act in a manner that was odd considering they'd just won a regular season Big East Title at the time had a cutesy song--fell apart and sniped at the guy who got them there.

Cal did a great job the past 2 rounds and to rally this team. It's okay to give him credit.. I'm not saying you have to pull for him and like him but it's fine to give him/his team credit. They did it on the court while dealing with the bull$hit that is Adou Thiero and his mysteriously and oddly timed broken down body that is so beat up he leaps/jumps off the bench and runs around in practices/pregame.
