Yeah they weren't missing shots cause they can't shoot. They were missing shots cause their offense was so out of sorts. Arkansas straight up beat themI've seen st Johns play 3 or 4 times this year and this was by far the worst they've looked. I'm hoping the Illini do the same for us tomorrow.

Well he’s back next week- that was the narrative for Fland- they were playing great with ThieroCompletely different team since they ran Thiero off
Agreed!Only 3 teams in the second round are/were bigger favorites than St. John’s. It’s funny how some folks hate Cal so much they try to make it look like the Johnnies were the Washington Generals. Someone yesterday said this is the worst tournament team Pitino has ever had. A 2 seed. Heh
It’s just tournament luck. He had it here early in his tenure and it dried up bad the last few years.
He gets clowned when a random white dude hits 10 3s on his team and the national media kiss his butt when SJ goes 2-22 from 3. Just how it is.
That’s my point. Narratives are largely formed off tournament luck. Cal didn’t forget how to coach the last 5 years and this also isn’t “the best coaching job of his career” that media folks are touting.I mean tournament luck applies to every coach though pretty much.
Tubby was super lucky against Duke n 98 (and Stanford) but then couldn't get a break the rest of tenure.
Pitino had terrible luck n close games and then finally had a team with so much talent he couldn't screw it up n 96 but then had bad luck n 97 in the final.
And on and on.
I've seen St. John's play most of the year-and this is how they looked more than 60% of the time. Pitino doesn't pull any punches and he kept saying as clear as day what they needed to do to win. Problem was the key player was awful (Richmond) and their best offensive player shot like crap (which isn't shocking).I've seen st Johns play 3 or 4 times this year and this was by far the worst they've looked. Big East was not an elite conference this year. The outrage when Dan Hurley responded to the question of how far St. John's can go in NCAA's after losing to them at MSG with "They have Championship level defense but their going to have to make more shots because you can't win with defense alone" proved to be not liking the messenger rather than listening to the message. He was labeled a hater, etc...and it's funny because it came from a guy who openly stated after flaming out with a "defense wins" approach that he needed more shooting/offense to advance.
Steve Lappas (who with Andrew Catalon is arguably the top team broadcasting CBB IMO) called out every aspect of the game correctly. Mentioned how St. John's won't be able to get away with what they did all year in a down year for the Big East...and low and behold..they couldn't dominate the paint...they got shots blocked and they didn't turn over Arkansas because Hogs had as many athletes. Arkansas size bothered St. John's and Pitino got rattled and benched his best offensive player because.....he got shook. Love Pitino as a Coach and what he did this year shouldn't be putdown due to the outcome, should be celebrated more. That said, he gets rattled big time when facing Cal and hearing RJ Luis call him out after the game for his demeanor was eye opening. Times got tough and this team that went on Jimmy Fallon and had time to act in a manner that was odd considering they'd just won a regular season Big East Title at the time had a cutesy song--fell apart and sniped at the guy who got them there.
Cal did a great job the past 2 rounds and to rally this team. It's okay to give him credit.. I'm not saying you have to pull for him and like him but it's fine to give him/his team credit. They did it on the court while dealing with the bull$hit that is Adou Thiero and his mysteriously and oddly timed broken down body that is so beat up he leaps/jumps off the bench and runs around in practices/pregame.
he lost his NBA touch at UK the last 4 years at uk had he had top 5 NBA talent the last 4 years at UK u would been duke or betterHe was'nt motivated to do squat the last four years he was here...
