KSR reports Silver is committed to USC. I was surprised how uninspiring his stats were while at UK. I know - he's a NG in our scheme and their job is to absorb blockers and not necessarily make tackles. Well, imo, he certainly did the second part of that sentence. 24 games with 43 tackles (1.8/game), 3 TFLs and 1 sack. That's truly not much production out of the NG position. And, I'm guessing that many of those plays included Deone Walker beside him who drew more than his share of double teams so Silver should not have been double teamed that often.

Now, if he did exactly as he was asked very effectively, and that could be the case, I would question why we play such a scheme. It certainly could be observed that our DL is coached to be passive, not fight to penetrate and blow up plays but rather to hold up as many blockers as possible so someone behind them can make the play. I'm sure that's how certain schemes are designed but I have to say I absolutely hate it if that's what's been happening on the DL. It is one more indication, as many have pointed out, that our scheme is very passive, bend-don't-break, keep everything in front of you, etc. Since in many SEC games we're at a talent deficit, does it make any sense to be overly passive and concede yards time and time again as long as we don't give up 'the big play'? Give a team with more talent enough opportunities and they will break a big one. Teams with talent advantages can be patient and grind it down the field. We saw this repeatedly this year. Does this passivity also translate into why we're rarely near the top in takeaways?

I doubt it will happen as long as Stoops is at UK, but I would really like to see more of a focus on the front 7 creating havoc and TFLs. Yes, we'll give up more big plays. But, we might also be better on 3rd down and creating turnovers. I don't mean we should blitz every down but our DL should be taught how to SHED (not absorb) blocks, stay in their lane/assignment and find the ballcarrier. If you're main task is to hold your ground and stand up the OL in front of you, the ballcarrier is at least to the 2nd level before anyone will be able to make a tackle. That just seems stupid to me.

As for Silver, my assessment was he was OK but not a difference maker. We definitely weren't a stone wall against the run, many of them between the guards. And, at least judging from his stats, he was no threat to pressure or sack the QB. Will we miss him? Maybe. But, that's more an indictment of our lack of recruiting than Silver's production.

The portal guys from UK are going to Power 5 schools. Says a lot about who is moving on. In previous years the portal guys were taking steps down.

So how much talent is UK losing and what level are they being replaced with?
Exactly! I'm told the guys suck that are leaving and no worries the ones that come in will be better replacements..... I call BS on the whole situation!!!!

Silver was the absolute key to our run defense last two years. He was that good. He was everything fans thought deonne was. Each of the last two seasons, soon as silver got hurt our run d went from elite to porous. He was a massive human at almost 350 and not even a ton of fat. Whereas deonne is pretty slight (relatively speaking) from the hips down and is mostly flabby gut fat.

Any 3-4 requires the nose to demand a double so the ilb are free to run. Thats the entire purpose and the only way the scheme works. Silver not only demanded the double but he stalemated it. Thats as good as you can hope. Ya truly elite nose can demand it and beat it (McCall) but those are exceedingly rare.

Hayes looked good in limited time. Hopefully he can deliver. Even if he can, our depth just took a massive hit. Silver was probably the worst portal loss we had.

Not to argue as you're most likely more informed than I am, but Silver's stats don't bear witness to how good he is in your post. Surely Walker demanded and received double teams a lot of the time. If DW was being double teamed, then Silver couldn't have been. No offense would dedicate 4 blockers to 2 DL without leaving one or more of the front seven unblocked.

I am not saying you're wrong or that Silver wasn't any good or wasn't an important piece to our rush defense. I'm just looking at roughly 600 snaps (estimating 25 snaps per 24 games) he played at UK and he managed 3 TFLs and 1 sack. It's not like every game he played against Georgia or LSU. There were lesser teams throughout the two years he played for us. I feel that someone of his size and assumed ability (he was a 5* in HS) should have produced more even in our scheme. Just my $0.02.

Having said that, I may realize early on this coming season just how much he did for the defense. I'm not optimistic about either side of the ball this upcoming season.

Is it confirmed Hayes is back? I think Hayes was the potential starter before he got hurt. If he is healthy, he will be very important.

Dirty secret is deonne wasn't always double teamed. Unless the play was right at him, he didn't output much effort. Silver was constantly doubled. Thats why he was such an upgrade over Rogers because Rogers rarely got doubled.

Stats will never show the value of a good ng in a 3-4.

Hayes was projected somewhere but im not sure where. He played some 1 tech this year but so did deonne once silver got hobbled. Hayes will probably take deonne's spot and we have to plug in someone at ng.
