Should Amari post up more?

He runs the point now and does a good job at that for a big man but… He has had two really good games in a row where he didn’t miss a shot or free throw. In games like this one would it not be better to feed him inside and let him post up and score or possibly get fouled or kick it out.

He should be and is almost automatic in the post.

I was wondering this as well. He is so big and powerful he can really do some damage down there. I just worry about his touch on his shot. He’s no KAT, but because of how deep he can get positioned he has been able to produce points down there pretty well. If we could get some sets where we feed him down there instead of making him drive or back down from the top of the key, that would be best because he can be turnover prone when he has to do that.

Depends. They have success going to it in a pinch. However, you can't win at a high level running the offense that way. You can't win consistently not shooting threes.

I'd like to see him distributing from the post more rather than playing PG. That's where he's deadly and the corner threes are this team's strength.
Actually I would like to see the Cats set the 3 up out of the post more, teams are not going to let UK shot the three off those screens, that has been the game plan since Georgia hacked us to death out on the perimeter and won.

I don't think Amari is the right fit for this offense. He can handle the ball, to some extent, but he can't shoot the 3. The defender defends at the free throw line which clogs up the passing lanes in the lane. In this offense, all 5 players on the floor need to be a threat from the 3 point line. Time will tell if Pope can recruit a 5 that can hit the 3.

I say 50/50 with either in post or running zoom out top
He can still be a distributor out of post but needs to make good decisions and not be careless with the ball unfortunately we need him to bring the ball up a lot
As far as Garrison he should only be a high pick & roll guy that’s it and only play 8 minutes He should never run the zoom or post up
Only roll to dunk

I am glad OP open this subject, cause currently our majority of our offense is initiated from the 3 point line. Would be interesting tweak if we would go inside to Amari first and forced the double team and that should leave a 3 point shooter open.

Something coaching staff should consider. Teams have learnt our offensive pattern . For the tournaments we should consider this and also other schematics changes.

Agree with this and many of the other posts in this thread. Have to have a threat to shoot from three running that offense or it bakes a major flaw into the concept.

I would feed him, but as defense collapses on him, he needs to read what is happening. Take it if he has advantage. Kick out for a 3 when the double team comes.

I don’t think it’s carelessness as much as it is fatigue. He’s gassed which leads to mistakes.

He turned it over 3 times in last 6 minutes, killer turnovers. He has played well the last few games but he's still a turn over machine. He needs to realize he's not Kevin Durant with the ball. He needs to get to his spots and put up high percentage shots.

Yes. It's feast or famine with Amari. as regard assists versus turnovers. It's been that way his entire career. It is what it is.
His assists are up significantly with us, owing to Pope's style, but his turnovers are about the same at around 4 per game.
Check out his PER 40 numbers for them over his 5-years career.

This. Once we have a 5 that’s capable of hitting even a long 2 consistently, this offense becomes even more lethal than it is now and we’ll get a ton of open backdoor cuts. Right now, they just plant their feet in the paint and take that away and then grab and hold the cutter coming off the handoff

My thought, only if he is going left....he is left handed.

And having oweh foul out with contributing much..........alabama shut him down. He had 10+ points prior to this game, every game....

If oweh made 10+ points we might have had a chance to upset alabama.

Well, Pope keeps sitting Amari for long stretches, which means Garrison, a massive net negative each game, gets extended run. The only reason to play Amari only 28 minutes, is for rest.
Amari appears to be in great shape, but a big man initiating the offense, apparently takes a lot out of his tank.
If he can't play even 30 mpg as is, I don't think Pope can ask him to run post up action any more than he already is.

I hope Pope goes after Danny Wolf of Michigan. Checks the boxes.

Aaron Bradshaw played when?
AB wore him out.

I have never seen a guy that size with such a weak post game.

I’ve never seen a guy that size and with that much athletic ability get his shot blocked so much or miss dunks.

Olivia Sarr and Toppin come to mind. But neither were as big as Williams.

Guards just take the ball out of his hands.

He runs from contact. Many times he’s alone under the basket and waits until someone gets there and spins away from the basket and takes a difficult shot. To his credit he makes a lot of them.

The question is about playing him more in the post. Great idea but he’s not that player.

He has to be out there because there’s no one to replace him. Pope is playing him to what he can do and avoiding what he can’t.

I wish we had a guy that you could throw it to on the low block and count on him getting a bucket or a foul.

We don’t have that guy on the roster.

What Pope needs is a 5 who can create his own shot under the basket, who WANTS and CAN rebound and protect the basket. Amari nearly unchecks all those boxes.

If Pope can find a guy with Amari's size, that can hit threes and protect the rim, he could put an offense out there that would be damn near impossible to guard. Actually, he should always have 2 of them. Garrison is not a good fit in this system.
That's assuming he continues to bring in elite guards and wings that can hit at high percentages.

More than anything I am looking to see whether Pope in year 2 can get guys here who have mean streaks, and do the kinds of things we're hoping for. People here who have seen a lot of BYU say that his teams generally are not physical and don't play much defense. That isn't going to cut it here. What I have liked the last couple of games or so is that Mark is FINALLY showing some fight and temper on the sidelines.
