Scrap the Bahamas trip

Terrible example bc one lost in the second rd because of my exact point. Arizona lost sweet sixteen and duke was loaded with talent and should have walked away with a title
So let me get this straight. UNC made the championship due to guys like Anthony Harris and Ryan Mcadoo? Kansas had guys like Kyle Cuffe. Villanova had guys like Nhanna Njoku and Angelo Brizzi. These guys didnt play at all, and outside of Kyle Cuffe, all of these guys are really bad. You think that the teams I mentioned made the final four due to the guys I mentioned in any degree?

It’s senseless to play this thing with 9 scholarship players. Even if we land another it’s insanity to put strain on our players 7 months before the tournament. It’s a recipe for peaking early. If we are going to go into the season light on depth we cannot afford things like starting last season without Fredrick and toppin. The likelihood of injury is high when you don’t max out the roster. It will be nice and team building but could become an albatross come March.

there is zero margin for error with this roster. Last year was thin all year with constant injuries. This year one or two injuries could send the team reeling. A large part of the injury plague that cal has endured since 2013 imo is due to over training. Not just conditioning but also cal runs physically demanding practices even during the season. Any coach who does this is asking for injuries.

the bahamas was great for the 2015 team because we had basically two teams without a massive gap between them. This team i sense trouble already brewing. Fredrick and toppin have proven to be injury prone, wheeler as well. By the time we head to the bahamas that’s it. The roster will be set. A Fredrick injury and bam the season is in peril.

I always believe you play the way you practice which is why it’s important to have a full roster. There have to be opportunities for players at different times to rest. If you have a 10 man team then you’re working the hell out of those 10 men to get 5v5 in practice. If one gets injured it throws off the ability to run ideal practices.

overtraining is one of the biggest threats to high level athletes. If we had a full roster then play it. But with 9-10 guys stay home. Limit the gym times, save it for the regular season. Even then you have to pace yourself. Meaning dialing down practices between games. Sometimes doing light conditioning but limiting actual basketball activities. By running with a lean team cal puts himself in a corner to coach the way he does. The “run”” “go” mentality, pushing players in that way is terrible when you don’t have the horses.

I believe cal is great at getting players to play their ass off and leave it all on the floor. In order to do that though you have to have a maxed out roster. Part or Cals lack of success since 2015 is the teams are thin and he still rides them into the ground. I think of the 2019 team not being able to have pj and Reid together for a long late season stretch. That was a bahamas year and it seemed to wear on the players at least by season end they were injured and gassed. This past season our guards were gassed and injured at the wrong time. If you’re gonna make March runs it starts in November and December. You have to win to get that one seed but when you’re playing cupcakes you have to play deep into the bench. Unfortunately we don’t have that option so it seems this year so do the right thing. Cancel the Bahamas trip. Start light with these guys when they can begin practicing in July. Even though it’s voluntary you make a call to your captain (Oscar) and tell him to go do something fun instead of pushing in July. Sure let them play here and there but probably 50% of what they did last year in the preseason.
Use the walk-ons? Looking forward to Chapter 2.

The bigger question should be how many of our fans ACTUALLY go to the Bahamas to watch our team?

I would bet my house we add at least 1 more more player, and my car we add 2 more.
But in 2015 we went to Bahamas with 1 not playing (hurt), so 11 guys on scholarship.
But how many of our injuries could you attribute to over practicing?
Noel - no
Poythress -no
PJ (thumb) - maybe
Clarke - probably not since so early in season
Tyty - no
Wheeler - no
Grady - maybe or probably

Sure there is added (injury risk). But I think the added experience and team bonding is a bigger reward.

The Bahamas trips have been awesome. Great trip. I would book thru whoever UK is using for travel. Atlantis is good but there is a new place close to there that was being built during the last trip. I wanna say it was a Hyatt. You will have 20 awesome stories by the time you leave.

I would rather cancel the London trip. How many UK fans will make the trip? I doubt Brits will be fighting to get tickets.

Since he doesn’t use them all anyway, how about using the last few scholarships on local kids who would just be happy to wear the uniform? He usually has a couple of rich kid walk-ons on the bench, why not give some poor mountain boy a free ride and let him sit the bench beside the doctor’s kid?

Based on the injuries we had last year, don't you agree we could have used an extra guy or two, assuming Cal still has the ability to develop a bench?
We had plenty of players last year. Hopkins and Collins played very little even when we had injuries.

Let's load the roster up and then you will be complaining when players sitting on the bench end up transferring.

You have to realize we need some high achievers ro keep the team GPA up.

Keep your britches on. It’s not over till it’s over. Cal will get a few more players. Plus, who the hell are you to make a decision on whether we should go to the Bahamas or not. Some of you fans are morons.
Hey bro, you and @JFCats22 like to call people names (morons, idiots etc). How bout posting your real name so you can own your words? Let’s have it tough guy. Or are you just a keyboard cowboy?

Last I checked cal doesn’t coach any of those teams. Cal pushes the hell out of his players. Kyle tucker is a dumb ass moron who is a Louisville beat writer. I don’t care how much he polishes a turd it’s still a turd when he’s done with it. I promise you none of those teams were pushed the way cal pushes his players for a one year push. All of those programs developed their teams over many years. This team at best is two years old. At worst half of it will be new players.

we aren’t talking about minutes in the teens friggin Oscar is a 40 min guy wheeler player most games 37-38 min. Toppin and Fredrick have shown their bodies can’t handle those minutes. Wheeler too. The freshmen and reeves who knows. Again Kyle Tucker cherry picks and never gives reality. It’s obvious he read this and tried to refute with some stuff that doesn’t apply to cal coached teams. I gave you the real. Cal takes 9-10 players and every year guys wear out by March. Happens time and time again.

and no one has said to have a 13 man roster to play everyone. You play those end of bench guys in the Bahamas half the time, play them in the preseason half the time, play them against cupcakes half the time. You want to go to Bahamas to March on 9-10 guys? That’s a major recipe for March failure. Cal has no margin for error. You know Va, Baylor all those teams most of the time lose early right?

Hey did they play in blow outs? Did they play in preseason? Against cupcakes? It’s about managing minutes. You think they played no role? They saved a guy because they could put in these types of players when you don’t need your primary players on the floor. I remember a couple games this year analysts slamming cal for playing his starters late in blow outs. It’s stupid and you will see the results in March when you rest you stars in December and conference blow outs. Also it helps develop depth if there is an injury.

its a no brainer. We have too many players on this roster injury prone where one gets injured season goes sideways. Slurpers have to stop blindly taking bullets for cal and at some point show they think outside the box a bit bc it really does seem like a cult. I mean I can say cal is great at getting players to play hard for him but none of you pumpers not once have any kind of real take. It’s always pump pump pump.

Precisely. Those guys will put it all on the line for us if their name is called. It’s senseless to leave scholarships unused. Really it’s borderline lazy. Half of you going after me love to point out when a certain team has a scholarship reduction due to infractions.
