In keeping with the spirit of the thread, I'll play legitmately. I believe Cal is a good and caring man. Cal can motivate and recruit at a high high level.

The only thing I would add is he's kept us out of trouble with the NCAA.
Y’all complained about not having shooters. He got shooters. You complained his style of offense is outdated. He completely changed it and has one of the most explosive and modern offenses in Kentucky's history. You complained he had too many one and dones. He leans heavy on the portal and older players and turns out they made Kentucky suck even worse. now you complain that he’s not getting top players yet he keeps landing top recruits and vets. He’s too player friendly. He doesn’t recruit in state. He doesn’t make in game adjustments. He doesn’t call time outs. He doesn’t play zone. Whatever people on this board bitch about he does it and instead of giving some credit, you complain about something else. He’s a fantastic human being and humanitarian. If I had a highly talented basketball prospect for a son, I’d want him to play for John Calipari.
However, I’m simply a fan of Kentucky’s basketball program and he’s been doing such a shit job of running it the past 5+ years that I don’t care one bit about my first paragraph.

I hated Calipari for years when he was the coach of Umass and Memphis, and I didn’t like the fact that I knew it was his time at UK when I noticed the fact that it was.
In 2006 I remember telling friends ( some UM people) that I think Calipari should be the next coach at UK and they found it hilarious. This was just out of high school. I remember coming to this board and posting that I wanted Donovan first, and Calipari second. The absolute ass beating I took for even suggesting it was mind blowing. I don’t remember a single fan agreeing with me.
In 2008 I thought the same and there were at least a few who agreed. Only this time I wanted Calipari to be the first call. I’d say, even given our problems, 70% of the board still wanted to keep Gillispie and were adamantly against the idea of Calipari at UK.
When Calipari accepted the job I was happy because I knew we would win out of the gate and I was starved for it over the Tubby years after Pitino. But there was a depressive permeation about it to me. I still know a close friend of Calipari’s from back home and knew a lot about him from his son. I knew it was risky handing the keys to a guy like him, which is turning out to be correct. I was happy but felt trepidation at the same time.
Once I saw the 180 many did around the hire, I was flabbergasted. Some of the same guys that ripped me end to end for 2 years over suggesting Calipari were now singing his praises. I learned then that the coach at Kentucky projects the same aura as a movie star and to never take those kinds of fans seriously again. I still don’t to this day.
If I could say one positive thing about Calipari, it definitely isn’t using charitable events to shield his shortcoming like some will try and do. I don’t believe he really cares, and I have my own reasons for that. I don’t believe he really cares about draft positions or the like either.
What I would say is Calipari saved us during a time when we needed it the most and I hoped like hell he’d want one place to call home. But it turns out the typical Calipari personality cannot be tamed. I’ll always appreciate what he brought in 2010, and hope a miracle happens and he can be our modern goat (we desperately need it). But I think the ship had sailed as he’s become drunk on his own BS and doesn’t win to the standard. But it was the right hire as long as we survive him.

I think the word hate is being misused here, I would say that most of the fanbase "hates" what he is doing to the program by putting his priorities in front of the best interests of UK basketball and being paid thru the nose for doing it. I just had a neighbor pass that had not missed a HS sweet 16 in 50 years with the exception of the covid year, and never missed a UK game mostly on TV but sometimes in person and he was only one of thousands that every winter their life was based around Kentucky Basketball and he just turns his nose up at that with some of the statements he makes. Its one thing to lose giving your all its another thing to mismanage his personnel and not take every game seriously (SEC Tournament) to me thats the big issue.
He’s triggered a bunch of people who live on this message board to constantly embarrass themselves by acting like children.
It’s been a pretty good side source of entertainment.
But for real- he was SO GOOD his first dozen or so years here that people are so spoiled they aren’t even satisfied with one of the most fun, easy to like teams we’ve had in his entire tenure. Maybe they win it all, maybe they flame out early but it has been one of the first seasons that has been enjoyable going back even before the below our standard seasons. Just a very enjoyable team that can beat anyone in the country. Sign me up every year.
