Rumor from UT

It was passed 9-0. Why shouldn’t guys get NIL money?

I don't anyone is against the kids getting paid. From reading what UT fans are saying they give the impression that Banks is a Memphis street kid and was jealous of the amount Hooker was getting. I don't think anyone who knows is saying much but I think it creates some locker room heat. Especially when kids are getting 7 figures before they enroll.

The Ut defense was garbage this year while the offense was amazing. Which one deserves the NIL money?

And it might just be an excuse for getting your behind whipped.
NIL will ruin many kids long term dreams with quick money. Once they have that green in their pockets work ethic will fade. Same as on the streets dealing drugs where many of them come from. No one thinks you shouldn’t be paid for what your name produces. Zuckerberg was a millionaire at 20 so I guess it works out for some.

Line backer Banks was upset that Hooker and receivers were getting all the attention and most of the NIL money. They have a huge locker room confrontation. Banks was suspended and UT defense laid down. Of course truth will not be known but NIL will cause these problems when it is not evenly distributed
That’s also a clever way to say. We got our tails whipped. Right?

Well that would explain why USC suddenly turned into a lethal offense after posting a meager 6 points in a loss to Florida the week before

But.... the next shoe to drop in college locker rooms is:

  • OL to QB--"Better start spreading around some of that NIL money if you want to stay upright."
  • Defense to NIL skill players-"Where is the NIL money for DL/LBs/DBs?.....we do the grunt work. Y'all need to spread some around, so we can hold the score down and make it easier on the offense."
  • All non-NIL players to NIL recipients: "Get Mr. six-figure NIL-man to go to meet us at the bar....NIL gets the tab."
NIL will cause a lot of harm (along with the good) in CFB. Pass the popcorn.

GBB!

OK...lets play this out.

- Why is it OK for NFL to have salary cap? Same of NBA? NHL?
- Why does Dallas Cowboys have to have a similar payroll then Tennessee Titans? You know Cowboys could pay more with their market share.

I am going to tell you the answer...its the salaries are capped but endorsements are at player level and Pat Mahomes can make all kinds of money whereas other players can't get the same endorsements. The crux of the issue is NIL in college sort of combines endorsements with flat out paying players by companies via college teams.

In the name of freedom for people....you're going to end up having program fans not care for certain teams and they close up shop eventually.

I'm not necessarily opposed to kids having the ability to earn money while playing college sports. That being said, the NCAA is a voluntary league. No one has to play NCAA sports if they don't feel they are getting a sufficient return from doing so. A voluntary league should be able to set whatever rules they see fit. If athletes don't think complying with those rules are worth what they get in return, then they are free to play elsewhere or not play at all. If athletes were forced to play NCAA sports, then I would agree with the court. Government should not be telling private voluntary leagues what their rules must be.

And that description is very close to “the invisible hand” governing free economies.

If there are programs that can garner no NIL support, why should they, in a free economy, survive?

Harsh, but the reality faced by all individuals/businesses in a free society, with a pretty thick safety net for individuals.

Money will always be an issue now. This is not a surprise.

The inherent risks posed by SCOTUS’s opinion.
That's called unintended consequences. Many people do not understand the laws of the universe......for every action, there is an equal and OPPOSITE reaction.

Hooker just took possession of a brand new Mercedes Coupe this week.

Banks said, F that man......and the fight was on.
USC 63 UT 38 and they had to score in the last minute to cut it to 25, just like they did against MO last week.

Josh Heupel looked like someone kicked his puppy Saturday night.

People that didn’t think this would become a problem in College locker rooms had their head stuck in the sand. It has caused some problems at other places other than Tennessee. And it will continue to cause problems. This is not the NFL. These are college age kids. Plus they all don’t have contacts that pay them money. They only have the NIL (pay for play) money to fall back on.

I can see players that work just as hard every day in practice, in games, and in the offseason busting their asses and not getting money while a chosen few raked in the dough. Not saying it’s right to be jealous, but I can understand why they’re pissed.

I can believe it but you wouldn’t think that would happen to teams still in National Championship contention….all they needed was 1 slip up. Teams like Olemiss or Alabama now where their season and high hopes are officially over…sure.

Also what an idiot. It isn’t like he hasn’t known his whole football career that the offensive side of the ball tends to get more praise and exposure bc it’s “sexy”. Defense is hard nosed and gritty and doesn’t translate to flashy highlights as well other than a play or 2

You make a really good counter argument. If UK can't create enough NIL to be viable....do we really need to have football at UK? So how about we just roll up the tents in Lexington, Nashville, Starkville, Oxford, Columbia, Mizzou, Fayetteville (unless Walmart throws their hat in the ring),etc..

And just have Bama, UGA, LSU, Tennessee, Texas AM, maybe Auburn, maybe Florida and be done with it. Because that is the path it's going to probably end up. Look no further than MLB where teams just have all star rosters and 1/3 of bottom teams can't afford by 1-2 well paid players to compete with. I guess from my vantage point having teams like UK, South Carolina, Ole miss, etc...to have some level of playing field to compete with Bama, LSU, UGA, etc... does make for a leauge that draws interest does it not?

A wise QB without great immediate need of money might well arrange with his sponsor a division with the line/team.

Yeah, a lot of players would need the money, now, to move Mom/family to a new home, etc. buuuuuut, there are some that could divide with teammates.

I think I’d rather have a safe blind side over a new Mercedes, but to each their own.

I am not saying there should or shouldn't be a salary cap. What I am saying is these kids aren't mature enough to realize one position is more valuable than another. And this will cause some friction in the licker room.

I am not disagreeing with you. But in the past these kids had to be careful if they took a job, making sure they were being paid the going rate, not more.

Funny that they would be upset with some players getting more than others. I guess the NFL will really surprise them.

The NFL can cut you when you slack off. There is hundreds of guys playing somewhere else dying to get the league minimum or more to play the game.

The college thing is out of whack. You got kids driving Benz's while other can get a free sub. Hell the recruits coming in next are getting more and haven't done anything yet. Look at A&M blowing up in their face with unproven mercs getting all that money.

I totally agree...this is hard for kids to see which players/spots are most valuable. I know Hooker is very important to Tennessee...but Banks is about the only credible defensive player to Tennessee IMO. And he is more important than RB and maybe al the WR for that team. But I bet when NIL comes around, he'd get less than all those guys.

I just don't see how with NIL and even dumber transfer portal this will ever not go into a direction that top teams just stockpile more and more talent that continues the divide...then when they need a free agent to fill a spot...they just coincidentally get kids to jump from lesser teams to fill their spots. I just find that whole scenario ridiculous for the have nots (as if the past system was really a good situation for have nots).

Because that is the path it's going to probably end up.
Take a look at your respective lists, and what has really changed with NIL, if the worse scenario plays out?

Not much, as the lesser funded programs will still play to get $$ from the massive TV deals.

And given that the rich will likely stay rich and the poor will likely stay poor, kind of re-confirms to me that this was the essential status of “the market” prior to NIL, and the delivery of smaller, quiet, cash payments.

I claimed that would happen but the entitled generation assured everyone these guys were pros. There would be no problems.

I was confused for a minute. I thought you were talking about the NWSL.

Pretty sure that Knoxville Mercedes car dealer wasn't too concerned about the Oline.

Just wanted the Heisman winning National Championship QB to be seen in a car from their dealership.

Pretty hard for Hooker to give the O line a share of his Mercedes. I guess he could give them a ride to McDonald's. Would that help?

NIL baby!!!

I think leagues are a different animal and need to be viewed differently than individual stand alone businesses. Whether you are talking about MLB, NBA, NFL, or NCAA, league teams are only in competition with each other on the field, court, track, course, etc. They don't compete with each other as businesses. The business is the league, not the individual teams, colleges, or franchises. Without the league, the value of each college program or franchise is zero. The league competes with other forms of entertainment, but all members of a league need the others members of that league in order to have a product.
