I was curious about the rule so looked it up for both the NCAA and NFL.
The call was correct because it was an obvious kicking play, in between the tackle box, the kick wasnt blocked, and the contact was not incidental.
However, the NFL has an exception for loose balls, and that would not be a penalty.
Seems like this may be up for change this offseason.
