I've always been about the idea of Briscoe getting 25-28mpg off the bench. I don't think think Ulis, Briscoe, Murray would go together as well as some think. Briscoe is an iso player, Ulis is a distributor, Murray is a pick and roll maestro and primarily a scorer. Briscoe just won't be as effective without the ball in his hands. Any two of those three on the floor at a time will work with Matthews/Mulder at the 3. There will be times we see the 3 of them in together, but I don't see it happening for more than 5 minutes a game.

I really like having the microwave player coming off the bench, like Lamb in 10-11, like a J.R. Smith type where you know they are shooting or taking the ball to the rim when the ball is in their hands. Instant offense and a change of pace for oppposing defenses. They go from defending pick and rolls with Murray and dribble penetration kickouts with Ulis to Briscoe crossing you up and attacking the rim. Call me crazy, but that's what I'm hoping to see.

If he earns it, I am all for it. His size and defense should give him a shot, but Briscoe is the better overall player.

But sometimes it's more about how you "fit." Matthews might just "fit" better with Ulis and Murray. Time will tell.

Cal does like players with size (for their position) and that play defense.
 
I think there's a real chance that Matthews starts. Cal is a defensive guy at heart, and he almost always picks size when given the opportunity. He doesn't mind to put big guys on smaller guys, but he doesn't like being "undersized."

He's already going to be undersized at PG, regardless of who we play. He's going to be undersized at PF on some nights with Poy. He may not like the idea of being undersized at three positions, and thus may go for the bigger guy with Matthews.

Doing so would also give the second unit a true PG in Briscoe. And while there won't be a platoon this year, that will make for more competitive scrimmages in practice, which Cal loves to do.

I think it's a strong possibility he will get the nod as the first G off the bench.

It be interesting to see how the subbing situation will go depending on which guard comes out.

If Ulis goes to the bench, Id imagine Briscoe gets pushed to the 1, just because I think Murray will play off the ball much better than Briscoe would.

Briscoe will be one of the ten best players in the SEC yet many undervalue him because there was no drama with his recruitment. Briscoe will be one of the few vocal leaders on the team. I want to see him and Ulis on the floor together as much as possible.

as for 40-0, wouldn't it be just the bitch for all of the ncaa CBB world if it actually did happen this year, right after the collective crap-fest they all had when we made the final four undefeated run last year? HA! that would be an impossibly fun blast. I could actually die happy and content as a Cat fan if that happened!

Look, we are freaking loaded again with experience, size, depth, freakishly athletic but with a boatload of shooters.
If we win in Lawrence watch the F out.
No kryptonite like Wisconsin or Duke this yr. Either.

Normally I would agree with you. However his post was in jest. He listed 7 players that would all apparently be starting. And obviously if we were to start 7 players, no one could beat us. It's nowhere near as funny when I have to explain it though.

A lot of us have been saying Matthews is being overlooked for quite sometime. He is going to be a lot better than some people thin. Oh and for the 40-0 talk please it just is not going to happen. I wish we could do it but NO Way it happens.
 
Briscoe will be a very good player, but with the talent we have on our roster, being the best just ain't gonna happen. I really like the idea of Briscoe being our back up point guard, coming off the bench. I like that thought, but I'm just not sure Briscoe could/would handle that thought. He seems to be the alpha type of dude and came here expecting to start. If he doesn't, I'm not sure that would be a good thing for the kids attitude and confidence. I know starting ain't that important, but these kids don't seem to get it. Maybe I'm wrong and if any coach could handle this, Cal would be the man. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's not a team player. He obviously is or he wouldn't come to Kentucky, knowing how much talent Cal stock piles year after year.

Even if Matthews were better than Briscoe, no way Cal starts him over Briscoe. With Cal its all about future recruits. What message would it send to a future top 10 kid if Briscoe (a top 10 kid) doesn't start over Matthews? No way in hell Matthews starts and Briscoe doesn't. Ill bet my membership on that.

It's gonna be a good year, I can't wait to see them play, if Matthews is as good defensively as Ulis , wow that will be something to watch:popcorn:
 
Matthews will provide great guard depth and be good on the wing. Hopefully his defense is as good as advertised, but it seems like we have nothing to worry about. Hoping the same with Mulder, too.

When has the freshman ever not been the better option? You are suggesting there was at least one instance when Cal intentionally didn't play the better player because he feels the need to get people drafted, when I'm very certain that has never happened. He's never had to really choose, since the highly rated guys are always our best players, but still.
 
Matthews won't start. I love his game, but Cal finally has what he's coveted since his Memphis days - which is three elite ball handlers/play makers.
