Rings of Power series on Amazon in Sept

Supposedly spent $120 million on the first 2 episodes. Someone should really do an audit on this show because it sure does seem like they are just stealing money.

Indeed a ton of special effects. The weird sauron amoeba effect that went on forever was probably a huge part of the cost. I say weird because it certainly seems out of place for that character and added nothing to the story.

In fact the event that triggered that amoeba scene was beyond ridiculous to me. No way such an interaction with such a character would ever be so easy.

The third episode was better.

Jmo but im really enjoying the series. I really didn't like it at all until i just changed my frame of mind.

The weird and useless deviations from cannon are extremely frustrating mainly because the deviations are unnecessary and add zero entertainment value.

However If you look st it through the lens of inspired by lotr instead of actual cannon, its very good and very entertaining.

My favorite part was where Elrond Richard Kimbled in front of his king and suffered zero consequences for his essentially traitorous act. In fact he gets promoted.

The first 3 episodes are essentially the length of one Lord of the Rings movie and the amount of nothingness that happens in the show compared to what transpires in one of those movies is beyond belief. All 3 of those episodes could have been cut into one episode.

More musings:

Sauron goes to Mordor only to get captured and then bargains for his freedom? That's the plan?

Glad they brought back Eminem. Still don't know why that story line is still in the show. At least we only have one two crappy Hobbits instead of a caravan. The bell on the well thing was hilarious. Why are you so stupid?

Galadriel is still the worst. Not wise nor caring like she should be. Her stupidity furthers the plot I guess.

The blind queen navigating stairs like she is Daredevil is hilariously stupid. I was waiting for her to do cartwheels and a moonwalk on them.

And the eagle...the effin eagle shows up and screeches and everyone is yelling the eagle favors Pharazon! How the hell did they come to that conclusion when earlier they say if an eagle shows up at her coronation it would be a good sign for her reign?

There are reveals/spoiler alerts for the first three episodes of season 2 here, but this author does a good job of describing the confusion of this Middle Earth soap opera,
Including why one character did not return (shows how fluid the story must be to the creators):

I heard the show runners say that they wrote season 2 before season 1. My guess is season 2 was the original plan and the Salke got involved and we got season 1 as a result. Now they are trying to "fix" season 1 and it's just so cringey if you think about season 1 while watching this.

But that isn't what they are saying. They will tell you that they are going by the book and they constantly "go back to the book"...

Much of it goes by what written material there is to work with. Thats why the nonsense deviations are so frustrating imo. They add zero value to the story and actually subtract from it.

A good example is the Jackson trilogy having aragorn as a reluctant leader lacking in self confidence. That wasnt the canon but added some degree of complexity for the casual viewer.

Hmm. I'd argue it wasn't lacking self-confidence, but he was a reluctant hero. He worried he would fail like Isildur often. He refused to go into Minis Tirith until after the war was over. The whole point of him acting as a ranger instead of reclaiming the throne was that he was unsure if he could defeat Sauron.

My big thing with the film was giving Glor Findel's stuff to Liv and leaving out Prince Imrahil and changing up the last battle. I feel like they did that for time and money though. They paid Liv so much money they might as well use her in every movie instead of 2 scenes.

Other than the goo in episode one, i think this season is good. I thought ep 4 was excellent. Really neat to see bombadil done so well.

I think the show has been wildly inconsistent and have been frustrated by all aspects of the show, at times. It seemed to have no direction and just seemed to be a lot of stories for the sake of a lot of stories.

Episode 4 was the only episode this season that I thought did the foundation of Tolkien’s creation honor. If the first three episodes had been like episode 4, this ride would have been really really good. It was one of the only episodes of the season that made me care. And, Tom, is the best character of the complete series.

That said, I don’t have confidence that this will be a trend, but rather expect the next episode to be more like the first three. I hope I am wrong.

All this time Nerd of the rings thought/hoped they were going with the stranger being a blue. Last breakdown he seems pretty sure now the stranger will be gandalf.

I really hope its just another misdirection like when last season those acolytes called the stranger sauron. If they do make him gandalf I think its a really, really poor decision. I know they got some canon stuff wrong, but they get alot of it right too. This would far worse be even worse than the creation of the three rings out of order.

I guess we will see.

This is the show Amazon should have made. It wouldn't have lost 63% of viewers in season 1 and half after 2 episodes in season 2.
