Reds

8-4 win. 16 hits & 5 SBs with 100 SBs on the season. We saw it in Spring Training the emphasis on the running game and certainly the prospects have helped this number too. Fraley is going to easily be a 20-20 guy this year.

Need to finish off the sweep with 9 games vs Milwaukee this month, Arizona, San Francisco, the Dodgers and even the Cubs hanging in there all to come the rest of the month. Big games for Senzel with a 3-run home run and 2 home runs for India. EDLC/Steer 4 hits, Kennedy did his job and his performance was better than the 4 runs over 5 that were given up once he ran out of gas and scored while Cruz was in. Needed a game like this and a break with the schedule they have played recently and what is to come.
I hope the Reds bury the Brewers this month. Would even consider .500 the rest of July a success for this team with those opponents but hoping for much more of course. It is encouraging that the SP has looked much better since last Friday. We know help is on the way after the break with injured starters. Could not come at a better time for some of these injured pitchers and worn out arms.

Big game for Ashcraft since it's not SD hitters the Reds are playing tonight. For whatever reason, he seems to dominate the Padres. Take that same control into this game and it's possible he does the same to the Nats.

Yeah if he can bring the same control again, he will dominate this terrible lineup too like he did the Padres last week and their minor leaguers back in ST. It's still going to take a few starts to get back to full strength before I know he is back and the test will come against the quality opponents playing above .500 during the next few weeks. Consistency is key and what we need out of him and the rest of the rotation.

Davey Martinez has cried about everything all season long. He's not long for that job any longer. Thought it was hilarious Welsh said EDLC should take the knob off, sign it and give it to Martinez.

Every thing clicking for the Reds. # 9 Batter Benson coming on. Really fun to watch. Got to make the trip up 71 to watch them in person.

Ashcraft was shaky early then settled down nicely after giving up the 1 run in the 1st. Just what the team needs right now.

Every Reds batter has a hit tonight for a total of 15 in this 9-2 lead in the 8th. They've had 38 hits in this series so far.

EDLC tonight

- Stole 3rd tonight dang near standing up. Crazy as to how easy it was.
- Post game said a few words in English that we well pronounced. I.e., he knows more than he typically lets on.

Stephenson has been on fire lately hitting .450 with 9 hits, 2 HR & 5 RBIs in the past 7 games. 11-game on-base streak. What a lineup when Steer is your 7th hitter, Stephenson 8th and Will Benson 9th. Votto 6th and back above the mendoza line now with 5 home runs since coming off the IL.

Karcher has very good stuff. Good fastball, good hard slider but he is simply too damn wild. Almost a walk an inning. It's hard to overcome that.

I think it is just a formality to add Santillan back on the 40-man roster since being activated off the IL and Karcher will be outrighted to the minors just as Kevin Herget who was already in AAA unless of course some team claims Ricky.

Reds needed this 4 game sweep with this tough July schedule after this. 9 games with Milwaukee starting with the road trip there and back home vs the Brewers after the break.

Maybe I can get why Bell moves EDLC to SS, McLain to 2nd and Steer to 3rd in the bottom of the 8th to change the batting order but then he moves Steer to 1st and Senzel to 3rd in the 10th after they had just put Votto at 1st in the 9th. Not that McLain would have handled the sharp grounder to SS or Steer would have made a better throw to 1st than Senzel. Some of the moves, especially in the 10th, just seemed unnecessary and could have easily cost them the game.

Yeah, head scratchers but everything they're doing right now turns to gold. Senzel's misplay in center costs them a run earlier in the game then he stumbles and fumbles his way to making the Play of the Game, gotta give him credit. Looking more and more like their year.

If Steer can't handle that wide throw and it goes into RF, the Reds likely lose the game right there. Yet it's jaw dropping to me how they're 10 games over .500.

The fact they're winning like they are despite the problems at SP, makes you wonder how good they can be if they get that area shored up. Sure, the additions of McClain and EDLC have bolstered the lineup greatly, but it's really the combined effect of several guys showing out, returning to form or finally staying healthy for extended periods. Friedl, Fraley, Steer and Benson are showing out, Friedl and Fraley were typically role players or bench options. They've both shown they deserve to be playing every day, and honestly might both make for some good off-season trade bait for SP options that will bolster the rotation. India Returning to his Rookie season form, has made him a team leader, Tyler Stephenson and Nick Senzel both being healthy for the most part has been huge. and TS seems to be coming around at the plate as well.

The one positive out of all of this, if they can remain competitive and healthy and maybe sneak into the playoffs, is that they will become a more attractive team to play for when it comes to shopping for Free Agents in the Off Season. There will be some pitchers out there who see the run support the lineup would give them and will be pursuing them as an option. The amount of revenue EDLC alone will generate for the franchise will help allow them to spend more money, in a perfect world. If they play well in Milwaukee before the All-Star Break, I have to imagine that GABP is going to be packed to the gills next weekend when the Brewers are in Cincy.

It is inevitable and have to limit innings with any young pitcher especially if there is going to be any run in October. Winning season or not, just something you have to do with young starters. Should Greene & Lodolo get back in a reasonable time in August there will be some depth to skip and push back starts. Lively is likely back in the bullpen when he returns but he & Kennedy if needed both can step up for a spot start.

Personally, I don't consider 24 to be young pitcher. Starting into prime imo.

It is if you are in your 1st season in the big leagues and never pitched that deep into a season before. It is necessary to rest the young arms or risk injury. Have to be smart about it. It's a good plan, more about the workload and less about age regarding his overall experience and just happened to debut at 24. Abbott hasn't topped 118 innings in any season, at 87 1/3 between MILB & Cincinnati.

24 y/o with college experience has probably pitched a lot of innings. Needs to move up the line ASAP.
Has to be done the correct way. The last thing we need is to see another Kerry Wood in 1999 or Mark Prior with significant arm injuries pushed to go deep into the postseason like they did in 2003 and flamed out early in their careers. The Reds find it necessary to skip a start, they are probably right in doing so.
