Recruiter profile: John Schlarman

John Schlarman is Neal Brown's successor as recruiter-in-chief in Big Blue's backyard. He handles the in-state recruiting.
Early in the Mark Stoops era it seems like Schlarman was just finding his way, trying to carve out a niche somewhere. He's a Kentucky guy but the state was blanketed by Brown, with the staff teaming up to a large degree for the top local prospects.
Drake Jackson was a major commitment for Kentucky on the offensive line.
But Schlarman has quietly carved out that niche for himself and has had a hand in several offensive line commitments. He's also become a formidable recruiting presence on the ground in the Commonwealth.
Schlarman was the primary reason Rivals250 offensive lineman Drake Jackson committed to Kentucky when he did, and that has subsequently had a big impact on the Cats putting together the class that they have.
By the Numbers
Steady improvement. That seems to be the narrative when it comes to Schlarman's recruiting. In the Class of 2013 and the Class of 2014 he was responsible for recruiting one player who committed in each of those years.
Last year, in the '15 class, Schlarman takes the credit for two commitments. And he's the lead recruiter for two commitments in the Class of 2016, which is second only to Vince Marrow on the staff.
Who he's recruited
2013 - Offensive lineman Nick Haynes.
2014 - Offensive lineman Jervontius Stallings.
2015 - Offensive linemen Logan Stenberg and Mason Wolfe.
2016 - Linebacker Kash Daniel and offensive lineman Drake Jackson.
What might have been
It's tough to single out any high profile recruiting misses that can be laid at the feed of Schlarman. He recruited some offensive linemen behind the scenes earlier in Stoops' tenure, but few that would be considered primary targets.
Schlarman was part of the effort to lure offensive lineman Derrick Kelly back into the fold and that proved unsuccessful. Stoops himself made the trip down to Florida to speak with Kelly, too.
Impact so far
Haynes should take on an expanded role in the depth chart this year and given the fact of injuries and other unpredictable occurrences it's entirely possible he could see some starts. Don't be surprised if Stallings cracks the rotation at some point, too, although the rise of George Asafo-Adjei will make it a bit tougher for both players to see the field.
Daniel and Jackson won't hit the field for a while but they're both expected to make major contributions.
