Questions about Mid Major Conference Tournaments Next week and the automatic bids.

We have saw many times since conferences started playing conference tournaments at seasons end where the dominant regular season champ gets bounced in the conference tournament. Now this obviously doesn't effect the major conferences. Both regular and Conference tournament champs get bids.
But I'm talking mid majors here mostly the small conferences.
Should the regular season champ be awarded the automatic bid? Seems the regular season in the small conferences is meaningless. When a 7 win team can get hot and steal a bid from a 24 win regular season conference champ.
All the smaller conferences play their conference tournaments a week earlier than the big conferences. So the conference tournament champs end up with 10 days or so off before the NCAAT starts.
So at the very least shouldn't they have the small conference teams regular season champ play the conference tournament champs (obviously if different winners) play for the right to go to the NCAAT.
It would at least make the regular season more meaningful. In the smaller conferences the regular season champ could even sit out the conference tournament and await the conference tournament winner for the right to advance to the NCAAT.
Maybe Gonzaga's conference does it best in conference tournament play. I think the regular season champ gets a bye in the conference tournament all the way to the semifinals.

I always said that I think the regular season champ should get the auto bid and not a poor/average team that got hot for 4 games (like Georgia in the tornado year). The conference tournaments should only be used to improve seeding. What happens to a 1 bid league when the best team has an injury to their best player that keeps them out for the conference tournament and they lose? The rest of the season ends up being a waste.

They shouldn't punish a team for having 1 bad game in the conference tournament and keep them out of the NCAA Tournament. I'd rather see a few more mid majors in than mediocre power 5 teams. That's who you see knocking off higher seeds in the opening rounds each year.

Yeah we always hear the talking heads talking up this or that mid major in late February about how they could pull off a upset or two in March.
I'm thinking it's a one bid league. So it's pointless talking about them so soon. Because no matter how well they played during the regular season. They must win the conference tournament to get in the dance.
