Punt returners

When did they stop teaching them to put your feet on the 10 yard line and if it goes over your head to let it go? I see so many guys catch the ball at the 5 yard line it isn't funny.

I think it depends on the situation. If the punt is sky high there are 3 guys behind your returner to prevent it from going into the EZ, I'm OK catching it at the 7. But, you're right that more and more returners are catching balls inside the 10 and, often, getting creamed right on the spot. Maybe the extra 5-7 yards is critical but I'd like to see the odds of the ball being a touchback versus the returner getting beyond the 20 (maybe even beyond the 15).
