Public acknowledgement or business as usual?

Cal has never been one to make public statements about anything like the Hagans incident, injuries, and so forth but I thought we might get something on this one. Maybe even from Hagans. But until now there has been no mention of it. I’d be curious to know if he has apologized to the team or Cal. Unfortunately we will probably never know.
I can only hope it’s just a case of his will to win caused him to say something he wouldn’t normally say. Things can happen in the heat of the moment you regret later.
Hoping that the team can refocus and start putting teams away when they have the chance.
The Florida game will certainly be interesting to watch.
Go Cats.

When you and your wife have an argument do you make an announcement to everyone you know, friends , family, coworkers and strangers? Or do you talk through it and move on, business as usual?
That should answer your question.

We don’t argue in public and it isn’t reported online. This is out there for everyone to see. I thought they might address it. Just a question.

If my wife and I had an obvious fight in front of my friends (like a party), I'd probably say something to my friends the next time I saw them. Not the same I know, but sometimes a quick explanation is better than wild speculation and incessant gossip.

The thin skin crowd gets defensive as heck when anything like this is even questioned . Listen I dont expect Cal to address .. but I would be happy if Ashton did . A simple apology about things in the heat of the moment and he screwed up . I'd certainly forgive him. But many want to act like it didnt happen. If .. IF he really gave Cal grief about being inserted into the game its a rather large issue.

I think it would be great if Cal apologized for losing his cool with the actions of a 20 year old kid. I think a 60 year old guy would be more understanding of the situation. I mean, we do pay him $10M/year.

This happens more than you think especially when you have competitive juices flowing. Yes I’m aware of respect the coach, do as your told, blah blah blah. And I’m kinda embarrassed that the arena of 23,000 people is so mute, that a comment on the floor can be heard

I think all coaches should apologize. If a history teacher treated kids the way coaches do, people would want their head on a platter.

What is interesting is Liggins did the same thing against Kansas State his freshman year. I was concerned about it Tuesday night when I was highly pissed about the all systems fail loss. Upon reflection, while it was definitely not the proper thing to do, I don’t think it will have any lasting effect on the team.

What happens on the team stays between the team. No way should Cal address anything about it.
I would agree with this if it actually happened behind closed doors. The fact it happened in a very public way in front of an entire arena is different and different rules apply I would say. Any self respecting reporter will ask Cal about it anyways, so hope he has a good answer to respond to it. Saying “I’m not going to talk about it” will just make it worse and lead to further speculation as to what’s degrading behind the scenes. Coming out with a definitive “it was addressed, we’re all good and moving on” would give it some closure and people will think it’s behind the team.

I do think Cal yells too much at these kids.

Well he doesn’t. And these “kids” aren’t your little innocent tea time princess at home. They’re more foul mouthed than Cal I can promise you that.

Still don’t understand this nonsense about coaches yelling. These guys are playing for championships at the D1 level. It’s like some of you have never played a sport in your lives.

Me thin skinned? Not thin skinned at all. Just explaining the difference between a discussion between my wife and me and one between 2 public figures in front of thousands.

Cal’s a coach. Coaches yell. Players know this. This has only been going on since.... sports.

Tball is that way.
We must have coached T-Ball on different planets. I can't imagine myself, or any other T-Ball coach with whom I worked, screaming at a 6 year old. Maybe T-Ball is different now, but I'm always leery of generaliztions of the conventional wisdom.

If it happened in a very public way, it would have been on TV or there would be a video of it in this digital age. As it is, it’s been reported on by basically anonymous fans and we’ve also had anonymous fans on this board tell us they were right behind the Uk bench and didn’t hear/see anything like described. The bottom line: This is a rumor, not a public incident.

It should therefore be ignored. Anything else encourages the media/fans to micromanage the team based on the town rumor mill.

Back the wife/spouse analogy, if you subscribe to it, if you don’t I don’t care, my points above stand on their own. Your nextdoor neighbor says he heard you and your wife yelling all night, your other neighbor tells everyone he heard no such thing and he’s got good ears. You don’t explain what you and your wife were doing, you tell people it’s none of their business. Anything else encourages the media/fans to micromanage the team.

Quite simple...times are changing and people yelling and screaming all the time in the workplace is unacceptable. I mean, coaches in the high school level aren't allowed to yell and scream anymore.

It like some of you (really, just you) don't seem to live in today's society.

Well since I have it's more like people have different opinions. My TV says he does.

You don’t think any coaches at the high school level in competitive sports don’t give their kids a tongue lashing at practice? It seems you’re the one living in a fantasy world. Did you ever play competitive sports?

I can agree on some level that yelling is overdone (especially with kids/those younger than HS) and coaches should try to speak softer and carry a bigger stick. But c’mon, the tongue lashing isn’t going away because loud voices make you uncomfortable.

You really should re-watch "Remember the Titans."

I agree. It’s nobody’s business. I see so many back seat coaches on here who obviously never played sports at a higher level.
It happens with teams all the time. Both parties were frustrated. Don’t get 2 fouls in the first... please don’t get number 3 early in the 2nd. Damn now I’m out. I can play with 3 leave me in. No you’re not listening.
They are a family. Bicker but forgotten. They talked through it.
Good time to hit the reset button and get any team issues out in the table including finishing teams off. Sto pressing. Start a anew winning streak.
Several of our title teams stumbled late. 78, 96, even 98 lost in Feb to Ole Miss in Rupp.

Not a big deal. I’m sure Ashton respects Cal who has coached NBA all stars. I’m sure Wall Booker Bledsoe Herro Ulis all had give and take with him. Part of the deal.

There is some truth here, but there is also a lot of truth that people respond in different ways. I think yelling in practice is one thing, but yelling in front of fans, the Public, 15' away is something else, more like public humiliation than being uncomfortable. I think some kids today respond like kids did in the past, but I also think some kids today, the highly strung, highly talented kids think in terms of, "I have options, I don't have to take this." That at times is reinforced by parents and "handlers". The fact is there is a bit of truth in that.

For all of you who think people are over reacting you're being selfish. This is not normal and not a good thing and needs to be heavily addressed at the very minimum internally. I've never heard of anything closely happening here in many decades of following UK. Bench his ass for a couple games....cal is a known pushover disciplinary wise so I dont expect much to happen although he should be sanctioned.

Exactly. It isn’t like working with church groups either; where the kids mostly behave and want to be there. No. You’ve got anywhere from 20-120 different teenagers from all different walks of life, all different cultures, and all different discipline levels at home (some nonexistent sadly). Some times you have to yell to get a teenagers attention. Why? Because they’re known to be (like all teens are) STUPID from time to time. They think they know everything. Has always been that way and always will be. It’s human adolescent nature. And as anyone who’s ever worked with a teenager knows, they will push buttons.

History teaching and coaching share similarities sure. But no. They are not the same. Sports requires a huge physical demand. I was in band all through out my school years. Marching band requires a high physical demand as well. But it doesn’t even come close to the huge demand of sports like football or basketball. We worked our butts off to be sure, BUT we weren’t getting hit by 250 pound hormone fueled, padded up teenagers either.

Point being when your body is taking that kind of punishment, added in with the STUPID and IMPULSIVE adolescent brain, you aren’t going to always hear the reasonable talk of an adult. Sometimes you have to yell to get their attention and refocus them. Of course some over do it. But to say there’s no place for that? Yeah. Ok.

wasn’t really directed towards you in particular

What makes a coach so special?
There is not one thing but if I was to pick just one talent it would be communication. That is easy with some people but is much harder to be able to do with so many different people with different backgrounds.

So that communication has to be screaming and raising hell?

No, we live in the real society. It’s not the one you know from your socially engineered bs. It’s the real world.

They aren’t at a work place. This is sports at a high level. That’s part of the territory.

Some of you have no experience in athletics and it shows. Keep your nonsense to yourself and stop infecting the rest of us.

$10 mil a year is to teach kids how the game is played. But... sorta a catch 22. He yells to be more aggressive and then scolds for being over aggressive. fine line. But a learning experience for both
