My big takeaways

Jackson is fine at Center I thought he was like Lee but he’s closer to Noel than Lee. At pro day he didn’t look like a skinny guy who will get pushed around. I think it’s a big help inside I like Ware but we better playing Brooks more.

Askew isn’t as big as I expected. In recruiting podcast they said legit 6’3 maybe 6’4 or so. Not a big deal but he’s more a PG. Also more athletic than I expected so you see why he has more upside than Mintz.

The team length as far as wingspan is crazy. Height is great but other than the PGs everyone who will play significant minutes has around a 7 wingspan you could see it in the pro day it’s hard to pass and layups are a challenge

ESPN’s Jonathan Givony released a rundown of the measurements and compared the results to other notable NBA players, along with some other agility test results.

Among the highlights:

  • BJ Boston (6’6.75″, 185 pounds) draws close physical comparisons to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Caris LeVert and Jeremy Lamb
    • Has added three inches in the last three years
  • Terrence Clarke (6’6.75″, 194 pounds) draws physical comparisons to Andrew Wiggins and Bogdan Bogdanovic
    • 37.5 inch maximum vertical leap and UK’s second-fastest lane agility time
  • Isaiah Jackson (6’10.50″ in shoes) has grown two inches and has gained over 20 pounds since summer of 2019
    • Similar measurables to Nerlens Noel
    • 37.5 maximum vertical leap
    • Team-best 10.85 second lane agility and 3.21 three-quarter sprint time
      • “Historically good quickness for a big man on paper.”
  • Devin Askew measured “as expected,” but managed a pro-day-record shuttle time of 2.61 seconds, just ahead of Devin Booker’s time in 2014
    • Measures similarly to CJ McCollum and Jrue Holiday
  • Boston, Clarke, Jackson and Askew lifted the 185-pound bar just three times combined
    • Olivier Sarr and Davion Mintz recorded 12 and 14 reps, respectively
  • Sarr posted a 36-inch max vertical
  • Jacob Toppin led the team with a 42.5 inch max vertical to lead the team
  • Cam’Ron Fletcher recorded a 40-inch vertical

Definitely. We have a bunch of long, skinny guys. That’s what you get when you have a bunch of 18-19 year old guys.

True, I guess it is most important on the blocks so at least Sarr seems to be able to bench his weight more than likely.

Boston couldn't bench 185 once. That’s pretty weak. Then again, neither could Kevin Durant.

Love the team and Cal's recruiting chops. But oh ... to always just have 1 big 6'9" 250 lb bruiser. Every team can use at least one.

But we'll be OK.

I've never truly understood why the bench press is such an important measurement. The motion itself doesn't even apply to basketball. As you said kevin Durant couldn't bench once and look at him. I can understand for football but for basketball? Boston and Clarke don't have to be able to do one for me to know they'll dominate 90% of the players who can do more than 1 in college ball this year.

Not necessarily. But Cal deliberately recruits length, quickness, and athleticism because he is first and foremost a defensive coach who prefers to defend man to man.

It isn't, but lower body strength is. If you have a weak upper body, you probably have weak legs. If a guy who can't bench his weight he probably can't squat 2.5x his weight. The lower body is a factor.

It matters much less when you have elite skill and athleticism...from my pov it was just an observation....I don’t think it matters if most of these guys can bench much.

In the ESPN article linked below it says the 4 freshmen were only able to bench press 185 lbs 3 times.....combined. The same article said that Booker was able to bench 185 lbs 20 times during his Pro Day. Sarr benched 12 and Mintz 14 times to lead the team. I don't know which is more shocking that the 4 freshmen only combined for 4 times or that Booker did it 20 times. He just didn't have the look of someone that strong to me but I guess he just wasn't cut and defined like some players are.

I think it was 2 years ago Johnny David had the 3rd most reps on team and was only a few behind Reid Travs and Nick Richards...yup, found it...see below.

As much as raw strength, length and build play a huge factor in bench press numbers. It's an outdated metric, really. As much as being thin hurts a guy like Boston or Kevin Durant, the real issue is that their arms are so long compared to the rest of their body.

It's why a guy like Reid Travis can do so many. Sure, he's big and strong, but he also has arm length much more proportional to his overall build.

If Boston's wingspan were six inches shorter, he still wouldn't be a weight lifting champion, but he'd be able to do a few more.

That wingspan will do us a lot more good than those bench reps.
