got called out for his play at ucla and justifiably so but I didn't see a thread commending him for his tremendous effort tonight . It wasn't just a lesser opponent either , Alex was active and took it upon himself to be assertive . That's the Poythress I know he can be , that's the Poythress we need him to be . So I'm going to give credit where it's due and recognize an outstanding effort .

I agree. Great effort. Bring it every game Alex!

Not much love for Poythress tonight for some reason. He was great.

I think this season is going to end up being a sacrificial lamb for last year's title lust. Those guys failed to follow through last year, so our fan base has seemed to switch to some kind of neurotic level of impatience regarding the current team. It's like some of them can't cope unless they feel completely safe about this current team - thus the insane expectations for a young team to somehow play like they likely will in December like they likely will in March and possibly April.

Thus, the general ignoring of the positive aspects of the season (like AP's continuous momentum towards recovery) and the semi-fixation on all the negative aspects of the season.

Let's be honest, there's really only about five people on this board who are never happy, and who want you to know that you shouldn't be happy either. They post so frequently it seems like 500.

I'm sure they're still pining for the days when Pitino would kill cupcakes by 50, but that's now who we are or what this program is about anymore.

He dunked every opportunity he got tonight and I was ecstatic to see it. No more finesse plays off the backboard! Shove it down their throats!

Yep. Tonight was important if for no other reason than to remind AP who he is and what he can do as a basketball player. I was hoping for one of his threes to go down, but Rome wasn't built in a day. [winking]

He gets stripped way too much though after a rebound. He needs to learn to grab the ball like it stole his girl/wallet/car/cell phone

I know I'll get called out on this, but since Poy is a 4th year graduate student, but missed most of last year to knee injury, is he technically eligible for a redshirt year?

Agree with what you said. How much would we love him if he was focused each game? Lots

He was great tonight against a small and totally overmatched front line . Great job Alex , now build on it .

I think Alex needs to start. There are some guys who play better off the bench and some who just need to start to have their heads right for a particular game. Alex seems to be a guy who needs to start. And actually, Lee seems better off the bench. Maybe just my imagination and a coincedence, but I thought they both played better tonight.

This Alex (slash freshman year Duke Alex) is a third team AA.

The one thing keeping him from that is the mentality. Don't recall another player who had a bigger gap of demonstrated ability game in and game out simply based on his mental state.

Terrence Jones is the closest thing I can think of, but he showed up about 50% of the time. The best-athlete-on-the-floor nothing-you-can-do-to-stop-me Alex shows up way, way, less than that. But man is he fun to watch.

He is STILL injured. That type injury just doesn't heal that fast. I'd rather he ease into the end of the season slowly ramping it up. he can be a beast though. He can...but I'm patient.

Good post!

I thought Alex got fouled on several shots under the basket in the UCLA game and when he stopped Parker from scoring he got called for a foul. That was the worst glaring part of the home cooking during that game.

You nailed it Jkwo. I have to agree. When he's engaged fully and ALL IN so to speak, he's a monster out there. But he gets a shot blocked, misses a shot, turns it over, or something else goes wrong, and he's out of it. I don't get it. His quotes after the game last night were great. I hope he puts those words into practice.

"You have to have the mentality saying, ‘None of these guys can guard me. I’m better than anybody out here,’” Alex said. “It really challenges us because when people say tough they’re challenging our manhood. So we have to correct the persona of us and show people we are tough guys. We’re not soft or anything like that. If you want to call us soft then come and play us.”

I love hearing that, now we want to see it on the court. And we KNOW he can do it. His talent is unquestioned. But his inconsistency is baffling. His team needs him to do this every game. He also needs to do it for himself and his own future career. We're all cheering for him.

I second that opinion. Great game, Alex !

I am out of the country ...and some of you will say out of my head,, so this is a bit late, but Poythress , is a disappointment, again, this year, after his second year, etc. and now after having to sit an entire year and watching dedicated players and watching how they approach each game, and after being in the system for four years, he should come out each game like its the last game of his life. His time is running out, yet he still just isn't engaged half the time. He still just disappears, with his skill, his non initiated energy, and his lack luster play and his poor decisions as to what he can and can't do....ie, DONT DRIBBLE.

He is a fine young man, he cares for others, is intelligent, a good example of student athlete, but he just doesn't have the heart, or desire to take advantage of HALF of his talents or if he does he just doesn't exhibit it by his play and performance. . I don't know why. I have seen other absolutely fantastic specimens In pick of games, that never could sum up the consistent energy, effort or desire either to be what they could be. They just don't have that "killer mentality" for lack of a better term. I guess, and it's only an old guys opinion that he falls somewhere in that category.

I wish him well, but after four years, he just Doesn't appear To be what he was thought to be in regard to a Player. In all other categories, he has equalled or surpassed expectations...but not on the floor.

I wish him well. Maybe I'm wrong and this next three and half months he will be it all. I hope so, but fear it's doubtful.

With how long he's been at UK, especially in the Cal era, I think some fans have basically given up on him. Let's not forget he's still rounding into things after a very serious injury. I'm not expecting an All-American type season, but I think as we move along he'll start to contribute in a bigger way. This team in particular needs his toughness. Alex may not be a great basketball player, but he is a tremendous athlete. I wouldn't mess with him. And from what I know he's a fine young man. Certainly appropriate to point out the great game he had last night even if it was EKU. Hopefully it's a good sign.

As the last person pointed out, you picked the worst possible time to make these comments. Also, you are not right about him this season anyway. He's averaging 9.6 and 7.4, coming off ACL surgery less than a year ago.

Just before his ACL injury he was on track to have a huge year, we would have won the Title if he hadn't got hurt.

This year he started the season without being fully recovered.

He made a statement with 23 points and 13 rebounds against EKU

Half your take is bad. It is early this season but at the end "IF" Poy remains healthy and the Cats have a chance, he will be a key contributing factor that brings this team another banner.

TBH, there was nothing finese about the way he was getting his shot blocked. They were being blocked with extreme force

Your kidding right? what time is the right time to have an opinion on an essential meaningless discussion board.... It's just an opinion. For heavens sake if our discussions here have any influence on play then I am just dumbfounded.
It's just a discussion board.
And Silents...is that really you? I am amazed at your comment.....you are much better than that.

There is already an existing thread for complaining about Alex after his poor outing at UCLA . This thread is to commend him for his efforts against EKU .

Considering that he's coming off a game where he put up 21 and 13 in 24 minutes, yes, the timing of your criticism is a bit odd.
