You can eliminate half the squares on your initial search, and then start from the center, using "spokes"

I played this board game hundreds of times when I was younger. My SIL recently challenged me to a game with a brand new version. They’ve reversed the ranks. 10 is highest. 9s are next highest. 2s are minors. I couldn’t keep it straight after so many years of using the older version. It was weird. He kicked my ass.
