In the 10 years Pope has been a coach, he has never had a team that played good defense. Now, that's not entirely fair, since most of his time was at a small school, but he's an offensive minded coach and if you're top 60 in last years big12, the SEC is going to dismantle you and your numbers are going to take a hit.with the limited time & players, no one knows what kind of defense Pope would like to run. Maybe he thought some of these guys would be more of a defensive presence. I know from reading of their past schools, I thought some would be more.
Regarding being too nice, Wooden coached in a different time. Back then, it was expected for coaches to chew out their players. Players accepted that as part of the game. Now the players control things, especially with NIL. Coaches have coddle the players instead of chewing them out. If the player doesn't like being chewed out, he just packs his bag and leaves.
This team has better defenders than what he had at BYU last year. BYU went into the tournament rated at 60 in defense, they lost immediately.
You're right about Wooden coaching in a different time. You can't coach that way these days, like you said, the players have so much more control now. Nobody is saying you have to yell, but there's a reason Pitino, Sampson and Hurley are good at this, they are very aggressive and they coach their teams hard. They use the bench as a tool and they hold players accountable.
I'm not saying Pope's way is wrong, but he's going to have to find a way to push the right buttons here, but hopefully he hires a defensive guy over the summer, because in this league, you better be better than 'good' defensively.
I think people on here get this idea that fans are getting the pitchforks out and want Pope out. Hell no, that's the guy I want, but it doesn't mean he doesn't have flaws.
