Pope show coming up

What is he saying? Would like to know what he is going to do to slow down South Carolina Saturday and keep them from making the most 3’s in a game this year.

Pope is too nice for a show.
Kept me off the air.

He is definitely very humble and you can tell he has some things he is going to try, but he is fully focused on the defense.

Had a caller ask him if he thinks he should be more aggressive towards his players, but he used a different word, just can't recall what it was.

One of the other callers asked Mark about the lack of effort that was displayed last night and the lack of pace at times.

Mark agreed with both callers and said it's not acceptable here. Pope isn't going to chuck his players under the bus, so there wasn't much else he could say.

I’ve learned something from every single episode. Pope speaks very indirectly about a lot of things. If you really pay attention, you’ll find 95% of the questions being asked by the nutso crazies are already answered week to week by Pope but in his own way.

Yeah that technique will sour real fast if the results aren't there lol. Because I'll tell yah, that sounds an awful lot like Cal, we're just twisting it a bit.

You're either answering questions, or you're not, theres no real middle ground.

Granted Cal was awful with this in the final years.. but coach speak is coach speak.. you're going to get it a little differently from every coach.. and it works fine with the fans, until it doesn't.

Probably why people say this is a 10 year job lol.

On Butler, “He’s making progress. It’s a complicated situation. We’re hoping for the best” 🤔

Dude. That scares me

So this actually makes me think he *could* be back, but it might just be closer to end of Conference play or SECT. Is his situation the one where they are using rehab in hopes they don't need surgery? If so, I like that there's progress.. otherwise they'd probably have shut him down by now.

But damn, freaking coach speak. Youd think he was run over by a bus with those words lol.

It won’t be a 10 year job if we are going to all be babies demanding the coach’s tell us literally every time we ask something in the exact way we want them to say it. There are plenty of things a coach wants to hold tight and that’s perfectly ok. Example, what if Pope has specific concerns that a single screen could decimate Butler’s shoulder. Fans want to know that but, guess what, if fans know so does the opponent. Next game, they run hard screen —- end of Butler. Not one fan would then say, “Oh that’s on us.”

Or Pope asked how are you going to generate turnovers. Pope says, “oh, we spent all week working on a 2-2-1 press.” The other team is going to hear it and prepare for it. Let the man coach.

Was he aware of the poor effort on defense, WHILE it was happening, or something someone else told him.

True coaching is screaming at your players and calling them stupid m*******f******. If you don’t do that, you aren’t going to win.
I have an uncle who coached high school and college for forty plus years. He put it this way, "Sometimes you just have to get their attention."

No disrespect to your uncle. There are many ways to get someone’s attention as a coach. Pope is more of the Phil Jackson type. Was Phil Jackson and/or John Wooden any good?

Preaching to the choir on. The more sports teams you follow the more you realize that this is the norm.

That seems very odd for sure. Butler doesn’t seem like a kid to cause trouble and with doors wide open, can’t imagine it would be anything with $$. I hate to do it, but I’m starting to wonder if there is more to it than injury.

But not on the court or in media conversations. Remember, everything we see on camera from the locker room or practice at UK is exactly what is want to be seen. Mark Fox is on staff too. You don’t think he doesn’t get into these guys too.
Didn’t say if Pope did or didn’t but there are people acting like coaches don’t rip the players in private and coaches do. I posted in another thread (before Popes show) that postgame last night from Pope’s comments to Leach I sure felt he lit some ass up.

Just because Pope doesn’t act like Hurley in public doesn’t mean he won’t occasionally light his players up. My guess is his focus in 90%+ positive but will get into them after stuff like last night. My belief is the occasional taking to the woodshed is much more effective than 100% screaming.

Yeah it seems like those rumors of needing surgery may be right and that they are hoping intense therapy can be enough to get him very late in the year back. All I can say is screw Buzz Williams and his football style for derailing this year something fierce.
I'd say just sit him for the rest of the season. If he needs surgery, then I don't think it does anyone any good to expect him to work through the pain, possibly causing further injury.
