Pope did a horrible Job tonight

Facts bother you?

There are 84 active coaches with an NCAAT win…Kentucky doesn’t have a coach with one
Fact is he never had the resources UK has. Cal won 1 in 5 years. Pope has an innovative offense and still plenty to improve on defense, but we’ve had some spectacular wins for a team thrown together in a couple weeks.

Be negative all you want. Let’s see where we’re at after year 3.

Might sound stupid but wonder if Pope sort of threw the game tonight with the way Cal/players were booed? Just didn’t see the fire or passion tonight, and refusing to go zone throughout much of the game. None of our guys besides Amari seemed to be “into it”

EDIT
“Threw the game” probably wasn’t the best choice of words, but nobody but the fans and Amari seemed to be fired up or dialed in tonight, which is odd considering all the hype surrounding this game

Well they didnt have Boogie, so that is a wash....He said he knew the assignment...Evidently he doesnt....Terrible coaching this game.
I disagree! Wagner played point for us last year!
We are without butler and krissa! And it's completely changing the dynamics of this team!

If either one play, the game would've been different. It's changing our subs and effecting the 1-2-3 position. Someone has to cover 30 minutes a game to sub in. Perry? No not big fast enough.
Noah was subbing the 4 spot! He might be able to help at the 3 depending on matchups.

No butler and I see 15-20 min of Chandler!

Had zero to do with this loss. We were not ready to play and to lose at Rupp to this team is 100% bullshit.
I thought we came out ready! Go back and watch if you can stomach it! I think you will find with butler out, someone has to sub for Robinson, oweh,Brea. Who???

Brea couldn't cover Nellie.
Almanor nor carr could cover Adou. So at one point he has oweh guarding Adou, Chandler covering Nellie.

Moving forward who should come off the bench?
Is perry able to cover any of these guards tonight?
Noah IMO wouldn't have been able to cover Nellie or Adou! So if butler doesn't come back, I think he will be forced to use Chandler to defend guys like Nellie/ Lanier ect!

Have we seen Noah and Williams together this season? I don't recall, but I do feel Noah is not afraid to get up in guy's grill. IMO Noah could guard Z and let Williams Nellie/Adou. Pope just needs to keep the guys who are helping you win IN THE GAME.

This wasn’t Pope’s finest outing and we have some major roster issues right now.

Perry is too slow to play against elite athletes, Brea is a net negative unless he’s lighting it up from deep. Chandler is an offensive liability and Garrison can’t handle physicality down low. Combine that with both capable PGs being out and we are a reeling team. I don’t see a win in Oxford on Tuesday. They grind it out and play rough and have some good athletes.

I have gone from dreaming of a deep run to hoping we can make the tournament. Am I overreacting?

We’re in with amount of ranked teams we’ve beaten combined with a stacked SEC. I just don’t see us doing much if anything when we come limping in

We don’t just have major roster issues right now, but also next year looks bleak.

Oweh is the only guy that you can pencil in as a starter. Perry isn’t big enough or athletic enough to play in the SEC. Chandler was a McDonald’s AA, but that Mormon mission has done him in. Garrison is a low IQ player.

We’ll go portal shopping and see what happens, but we have probably two guys for next year who start: Oweh and Johnson. Moreno is a project and Lewis, an unknown at this level. I do like Noah as a bench guy, but apparently Mark Pope does not.

I thought this too. However, a zone ALWAYS confuses a Cal coached team. ALWAYS! Every damn time.
That’s been my point. You want to make your opponent uncomfortable and when you play man to man on a team with elite athleticism like Arkansas and has a coach that doesn’t teach zone defense, they are going to be a lot more comfortable. Everything was going their way and they were scoring on drives and beating our guys constantly. If anyone thinks that’s not going to help a team shoot better they’re crazy.

My fear is, will Pope correct? Coaches are stubborn shyts.

Tubby refused to drop ball line defense

Billy put "toughness" over skill

Cal was always relying on talent over strategy.

Pope's all about the participation trophy. Feel like we learned early that the bench should be shortened and brought in piecemeal. But with Pope everyone plays and it's close to platooning. He's going to deal with adversity and pressure for sirst time. Does he adjust, or stick to his ways and think he can strategize weaker players to produce.

For his BYU career yes, I’m not holding Utah valley against him. But our AD hired him and he is gonna be here 3 years minimum so we got what we got
It won’t last longer than 3 years in my opinion. He is learning on the job here at UK. We’ve had some good wins but also some terrible losses. The issue for me is the soft approach and the ability to land an elite player. I just don’t see it happening here for Pope.

I like Pope, I hope he can pull a rabbit out of his hat in the portal because we are gonna need it. He hasn’t proven he can recruit yet. In state recruits don’t count in my opinion. Plus he is gonna have to get a little more attitude, nice guys finish last.
I know he’s certainly played with great athletes, but has he ever recruited and coached them ?? He’ll need to get better athletes here to be successful. He knows that …

Not changing up defenses was dumb - not pressing up on Z was dumb
Pope just had a bad night
Subs way to much use your timeouts
Williams need to play 32 minutes
Williams has never played more than 20+ minutes in his entire career. I’ve never understood why, especially playing at Drexel. Does he have a stamina problem ??

Bingo.

It also forces certain scorers to focus on facilitating more. When Butler isn’t playing PG, it seems like Brea, Oweh, or Robinson has an off game. Sometimes 2 of them.

No adjustments, waited way to late to zone, no press, terrible substitution
Was not too happy with all the sloppy turnovers. Teams know we like to do those hand offs out there on the wings and we are just dropping the ball or making lazy passes, back door every once in a while. This game disappointed in so many ways. They let that arrogant SOB walk in here with a 1-6 team and get a win. This was Cal's superbowl, now he will go back to Arkansas an even bigger A hole.

We got exposed, no Butler, not much Carr, you can only play the cards you have in your hand.
Yes, especially on defense. We play defensively without any good on ball defenders. To keep the more athletic teams out of the lane we leave the 3 point shot open. It worked against UT, they would have smoked us if they would have hit a fair percentage of their 3's. A bad 3 point shooting Arkansas team burned us on that. We played the percentages.

Coming off the big win at UT, Arkansas stinking up the joint all year, considering the situation, it was a bad set up.

I just think Pope waited too long to change defenses and give it a try. Otherwise, we good. These kind of games stay in your mind and make you tougher.

I hate it too but we’ll be ok
Yeah, I don't think we're going to be okay. If Tennessee didn't miss 35 threes, we're on a 5 game losing streak right now and headed for Ole Miss for #6.

There are a lot of red flags right now and the substitution patterns are right at the top. They make no sense.

Plus, our defense is about as bad as it can be and thats with Amari playing great last night.
