Pope did a horrible Job tonight

Coming off the big win at UT, Arkansas stinking up the joint all year, considering the situation, it was a bad set up.

I just think Pope waited too long to change defenses and give it a try. Otherwise, we good. These kind of games stay in your mind and make you tougher.

I hate it too but we’ll be ok
Whats ****ing shocking is if we had just played the exact same lineups and game plan as Tennessee we would have crushed them. It’s ridiculous.

Serious question. What change did Pope try? I saw zone 1 possession.

If they would have had Fland and 5 more minutes they would have beaten us by 20 or more. This is hard to take, I knew this could happen but was hoping it wouldn’t. You can’t lose home games to last place teams, but we did and it’s going to cost us.
That's where I'm really upset. I know the team lacks talent on both ends. But, part of the "understanding the mission" as he loved to say in his introduction speech, is understanding that you HAVE to win certain games and you HAVE to make sure that YOUR arena gives you a a home-court advantage. He HAS to understand that how you perform during the season (not just a conference tourney) will dictate your NCAA tourney seed. I don't think he understands that, not yet anyway.

They came to play and we didn't.
They shot lights out and we didn't.
They made free throws and we didnt.
They took care of the ball and we didn't.

Turnovers have been a problem while Butler has been hurt and especially tonight.

Were fine but we are a lot better with Butler than without him.

Your defensive philosophy cannot be "lets hope the other team misses a lot of open shots"
Brea/Robinson/Almanor just aren't athletic enough to play high level defense! Coming off the bench, Chandler was athletic enough to play tonight and that's why he had so many minutes. Butler/Williams/oweh are really the only ones athletic enough to stay with athletic dudes like we played tonight.

Pope has a lot to prove to me yet as well, but I know his roster is limited defensively! So we have to have several guys get hot to win. Brea oweh didn't deliver.

Not his best effort.

This team should have been ready to face motivated UK players

Don't want to rush Butler back but Pope needs to set expectations on his timeline.

Unfortunately, games like this happen. And Thankfully, Arkansas did not win a trophy or an auto bid to the dance...

Cal just punked UK. Probably his best win of the season.

And hopefully his only good win.

Let's face it, Arkansas has not lived up to expectations and UK has had to pick their battles this year.

Pope didn't do us any favors, but I'm starting to get really concerned about Fueger's scouting.

I love Fueger's enthusiasm, but at some point, you have to attribute our poor first half performances to the guy doing most/all of the scouting.

Any reasonable scout should also show that Cal can't coach around a zone to save his life. It just boggles the mind what we witnessed tonight. They were dribble driving at will tonight. Give em the Huggins Special or something. I just... It's a broken record tonight.

S***'s ****ed.

Cal didn’t out coach anyone. He ran the same stuff he has ran for 10 years. Arkansas made shots and didn’t turn the ball over. Period. Plus Brea was god awful.
Yeah it’s easy to see but UK has some of the worse fans. It’s easy to see why a lot of coaches wouldn’t want to coach here and hear crap after every loss. Those same fans thinks everyone would want to coach here. Sorry to tell them it’s not true.

Simply said, Arkansas should not have shot more 3 pointers than us,

that whole "you take what the defense is giving you " in this case is head scratching.

We never matched their energy, they looked more in to the game from the start & we basically choked this one away. The lineups we played were head scratchers to say the least, I know we are injured but Carr & chandler wayyyyy too many minutes.

The no zone is mind blowing. Cal struggles vs zone especially 1-3-1. Couldn't believe how little we adjusted. Especially given we didn't have a pg.

On offense they were able to take us out of rhythm because they harassed our stand in pg. We never provided a secondary ball handler or any other pressure relief valve.

Very few back cuts to relieve pressure. Poor spacing. I remember one possession at the end of the first half, we had all 5 guys in one quarter of the court.

Poor personnel rotations.

Seems the all or nothing pope from byu is yet to evolve. Ya the big wins are fun but you cant lose these and especially not this one. Even worse the all or nothing approach is a guaranteed fail come march.

Lets hope he grows.

Why zone when Arkansas shooting lights out behind the arc? Wanna give them twice as many looks from 3?
yes. you figure the numbers will even out if even a little. even cal knew this, which is why they only shot a third of the threes they did in the first half. 13 made threes is 39 points. they got 50 points just driving by us.

Is this a serious question? You do it because what you were doing wasn’t working at all and maybe a zone confuses them. They killed us on simple ball screens and pick and roll kick outs, a zone stops that.

Not to mention the other coach is cal and I’d think you would know about his struggles with scoring on a zone.

Game swung early when we brought in Perry, Garrison and a hurt Carr while up 18-12. It’s like a fighter hurting his opponent and then letting them get back in their feet and recoup.
I had the same thought. I don’t know why we made such drastic subs so early. Could have buried them with how good we started and instead just let them right back in the game. Never went on a run after that either.

I don't understand his substitution patterns and I don't think he does either.
He said post-game that he maybe waited too late on his first subbing. That is when I thought he killed the run. I know he doesn't want the guys to get tired but not sure he understand how the game shifted. I know he is an analytical coach but he has to have a feel for the game.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that pope listens to the numbers above all else. Momentum and confidence of the other team mean nothing to him. Keep giving up open 3’s the numbers say they will start to miss….unless they don’t and then you lose at home to a 1-6 team.

Agree 100%.

Well they didnt have Boogie, so that is a wash....He said he knew the assignment...Evidently he doesnt....Terrible coaching this game.
We also lost kerr. He wouldn't bring defense, but he brought energy and ball handling. It's not the same, IMO ark gets better without boggie.

But this tk me is about us. If we don't get butler back, it'll be a tough road!

This is similar to last year

We have some guys that can absolutely fill it up on offense.
But those same guys have zero desire to play any defense whatsoever.

I'm not sure who people think Pope is running out there that is going to change anything right now.

We weren't great on defense to begin with. Then u lose guys like Kerr and Butler.
