Pope, Calipari, Hurley, Drew — This Season

She 😉 wasn’t referring to Pitino, I was indeed comparing the record for Pope’s first regular season with the records of the coach that left, and two potential hires. UK is currently the only ranked team of the 4 teams, and we have been ranked the entire season, never fell out.

So proud that Coach Pope led this team to 8 wins over Top 15 teams and for the success he’s had. If Year One looks like this with limited time to compile a roster plus the injuries, I’m excited about the future! Go ‘Cats!

He was trying to flex and say that Rick was referring to Pitino being hired in his post......He wants to keep the Pitino thing going and was trying to redirect attention to that instead of to what you said. Ever seen a clown try to flex? 🫢

SEC competition vs. Big East. 🤣
Yeah, this ain't your Daddy's SEC nor your Daddy's Big East.

Normally Big East is a Power conference in basketball (hence P6 in CBB- now back to P5 with Pac-12 getting Thanosed) and has good strong teams (Marquette, UConn, Nova, etc). All have been pretty meh.

But they have been mediocre this year. Normally East Coast knows ball decently well but both the ACC and Big East have just been weak as dishwater.

that is true.... And an interesting angle, if you stop to think about it. It might even be said he was that way because he knew that Pope was really the best fit from the get-go and didn't want to see him (or Kentucky) have success, paired together. Maybe, maybe not. Hiring Pelphrey or Ford was never going to happen though.

At least, I don't **think** it ever had a chance.

They both would've been a DISASTER.

Pelphrey is sucking it up in the OVC. And I don't say that to be mean. He is objectively SUCKING as a coach. Let's have a look:

TitleHead coach
TeamTennessee Tech
ConferenceOVC
Record66–119 (.357)

OMG. He's been there 6 seasons and has 66 wins. Averaging 11 wins a year in a weak OVC. His overall isn't much better:
Overall215–245 (.467)
Tournaments1–2 (NCAA)
0–1 (NIT)

The man is welcome back in Lexington any time....but in the bleachers. He's a TURRRRIBLE coach.

Ford isn't much better. Let's take a look.

Coaching career (HC unless noted)
Head coaching record
1997–2000Campbellsville
2000–2005Eastern Kentucky
2005–2008UMass
2008–2016Oklahoma State
2016–2024Saint Louis
Overall491–366 (.573)
Tournaments1–7 (NCAA Division I)
0–1 (NAIA Division I)
6–5 (NIT)

28 years of coaching. Only 1 Tourney win. And average only 17 wins a year. Most of those coming at lower midmajors. Not impressive. But that's just the on court stuff. He's also a well know prick and let's not forget the wonderful story of :

Anything For Family: Travis Ford's Son Is Being Accused Of Creating Multiple Burner Accounts To Defend His Dad's Coaching Job At St. Louis

Here's the Link if anyone missed it last time or wants to read it again:

That's a kind of crazy we didn't need here in Lexington on top of mediocre coaching.

Pitino's coaching tree had two good branches: Tubby and Donovan. The rest....I dunno man.

From Runt#69 - “When you stop and consider that this year's Kentucky team might be the LEAST talented.”

Our present players would probably be backups on future teams down the road (no disrespect, I love this years’ players.). Recruiting will be difficult in the sense that there will be so many players wanting to come to UK to play for Coach Pope, his staff, and BBN. The key will be retaining players in the program for a few years. Even though we have had a great season, we do not run the offense as efficiently as BYU did under Pope. Experience in the system will lead to an even better offense.

I also believe Coach Pope and staff will improve going forward. They have juggled teaching all new players with no experience playing together, the multiple injuries, and the toughest SEC in my 55 years as a fan. It seems difficult imagining a tougher set of circumstances occurring in the future. We will have returnees next season, some highly touted freshmen, and hopefully some multi-year transfers.

I have the same sentiment for our women’s team with Coach Brooks.

It was still his choice. People need to stop bringing him up. He was never an option and won't be in the future.
He was an option in 2007 when tubby left but Barnfart was bad at coaching searches then too. Pitino would have left Louisville in a heart beat for UK in 2007. Back to camelot

Anyway to the OP ... thank God dumb barnfart had scott drew say No. But the real options that should have been heavily approached after Hurley said No were Nate Oats, Bruce Pearl and Beard... they are all pretty good this season id say.
