Atheist/free-thinker. Show me evidence of a supreme being and I’ll believe. Until then…!

We see it everyday. We are too busy to take the time. As well as take it for granted. This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Be Still & Know I am God!

If you choose not to believe, that is your personal choice. No need to argue over something so simple.

You may think you see it. I don’t see anything. Show me concrete proof. Not feelings. Not wishes. Not natural marvels that you attribute to your god. Not stories from a book that men wrote. Proof! Evidence! Something measurable!

Of course so. How can there be all these amazing creations without a Creator?
I mean, this question has been used to justify every single god that's ever existed, and every time it's been asked science eventually answers it. Now the question of the universe's creation might just be outside the realm of human understanding and maybe that will never be answered, but saying it cannot have been created without a creator isn't necessarily correct.

And chalking it all up to a "creator" doesn't really answer anything. Who created the creator? And who created the creator's creator? If the creator has just always existed, why can't the same be true for the universe? Maybe it's just always been here and never needed to be created.

How about showing proof there is not? Don't come off with stories men wrote either, that's not proof there is no God. I wasn't there and neither was you when the bible was written so show us believers there is not a God. Concrete proof. You can't. My concrete proof is that I have personally had prayers answered and in fact a miracle to happen in my life, and that's concrete proof to me.

Me showing proof that something doesn’t exist is not necessary. The burden of proof lies with the person making an assertion. If you say that the Egyptian sun god, Ra, exists, then you must prove that he exists.

I will now assert that there is an invisible fire-breathing dragon living in my garage. You may think that I’m wrong about that. You must now prove that the dragon does not exist.

See how that works!?!

So, do you believe there was a George Washington or maybe a Chritopher Columbus? If so, why and proof they existed? You can't other than what you read in a book, I wasn't around when Washington was here, nor Columbus so where's concrete proof? See how that works?

Show me proof, concrete proof, that there's not a teapot orbiting around Alpha Centauri.

Everyone knows there is a God by creation and conscience (literally Latin for “with knowledge”). The problem is that sinful men suppress that knowledge in order to assuage their guilt and pretend to be gods of their own lives:

Romans 1:18 - For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[g] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

You seem to be an empiricist…show me “concrete” empirical evidence that your empiricism is consistent with reality. Show me empirically that love, other minds, mathematics, history, or even you yourself exist.

The idea of monotheism is relatively new in the span of human existence..so "is there a God" hasn't really been the biggest question for humans. Prior to Judaism there's was a lot of polytheism, like ancient Canaanite religion which evolved to judasim eventually. Others assumed there were gods but didn't worship the way ppl do today...they were just there.

The thing about all these, and with Christianity, is it was all confined to small groups until it was spread politically. If the Roman empire didn't exist, which covered most of the known world, who knows if Christianity would've spread...especially after Constantine made it the state religion. But that's talking about religion not a God.

Now you’re on to something. You’re thinking like a skeptic. Even though there are hundreds of documents detailing the feats and accomplishments of Columbus and Washington, you have doubts. Even with universal acceptance in history books, you have doubts. You haven’t seen these men. You haven’t shaken their hand or had a dialogue with them. So you might be 99% sure they existed. But not 100%.

Now that you’ve gotten in touch with your inner skeptic, start reviewing what you know to be true about the christian god as described in the buybull.

Some want just one thing to show there is a God, just one thing, they want proof.

How silly of us. Be still & Know God, then you see him Everywhere in Everything.

Define natural marvels. The incredible complexity of life that you believe happened “naturally?” Or, are you talking about healings that blow the minds of doctors or visions of the future that come true?

Because if all of the unknown foundations for events are described as “natural” by you, you are simply resigned to your answer to the question and nothing seen as supernatural will suffice. If that is your take, that everything currently unexplainable will some day be explainable, your request for “concrete proof” is an impossible task, as it relates to you.

If you think there is a burden of proof on those who disagree with you, but not on you, you are entrenched and your desire is to be correct, but not to be the open-minded person that you claim. Being open-minded suggests you will actively participate, not expect others to carry the burden of satisfying your self-defined thresholds. Most of the truly open-minded people I know were once atheists and now are Christians. Yet, most of the people claiming to be open-minded are atheists. It’s a common theme in these discussions. Your definition of open-minded is anything but.

Asking atheists to prove the non-existence of God is a fair question when the subject of the thread was “is there a God?” There are believers who will argue the existence of God, but there are also people who answer in the affirmative because the weight of the evidence leads them to answer “yes” to the question, simply based upon the amazingness and complexities of the universe. Those people tip toward “yes,” but accept that if an atheist can prove their conclusion wrong, they would accept the atheist’s religious beliefs.

It is amazing when an entrenched atheist refuses the burden of proof. That person just, probably, described themselves as a prideful agnostic or simply a person with atheist faith. :)

Be Still & Know I am God. He is Everywhere. From the birds flying & chirping, to the grass growing, to the wind blowing, to the waters flowing, to the Sun Rising & bringing forth Light Everyday 🌞

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

Maybe it's just always been here and never needed to be created.
While generally accepted, the Big Bang is just a theory. Maybe it is wrong and time, space, and matter (or all the foundations for everything we know) have “just always been here and never needed to be created.” The concept of the “age” of the universe may be a mistake? In the world of “who knows” that is still probably a theory. It may not be accepted by most, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Religion is a crutch for the weak to lean on. To turn every thing you don't understand and are afraid of over to some unseen thing so you don't have to ponder the eternal nothingness that awaits us all.

You want me to tell you exactly what death is like? Death is exactly like before you were born. All that ocean of time that existed before your birth. That's what we all return to.

You're not the slightest bit afraid of the time before you were born, so why fear the time after you are dead? They are one and the same.
You are a piece of work. Where the hell did you come from anyway? Go back to the UL or Kansa Board or wherever.

Well said! I'm stunned by the people on this board-and in political debate-who don't realize that the the burden of proof lies with whoever makes an assertion, not with whoever disagrees.

I was raised as a strict evangelical believing literally in every word of the King James Bible. As I've grown older, I struggle more and more with problems and fallacies within the Old and New Testament I won't go into those as it would take way too much time and space. The one real deal breaker is that how could any loving father-whose love, we're told is the greatest force for good in the Universe-condemn his children to not just punishment, but the most hideous torture we can possibly imagine-FOR ETERNITY. (Save the free will argument-my kids have made bad choices and I still don't think they should be horribly tortured forever).

The more I think about this question, the more the whole thing starts to unravel. Why create or allow a Satan, and give him dominion over the earth? Why not create a better model for basic human nature? Why not give out crystal clear instructions in every language that don't change from eon or to eon on how to avoid this eternal torture? Why would an omniscient being ever have any regrets for the very thing he created, or his own behavior? One would think such a being would have a great track record.

I really hope there's a God and I hope he or she or it, is an all loving, benevolent being capable of overlooking and forgiving my sins and bad choices, Still the physical evidence to the nature of such an entity is rather slim.

Also, I just wanted to add that I feel that the poll options are bigoted and exclusive. There should be a non-binary option. This is the 2020s, after all. OP, you should be ashamed.

The life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is verifiable. Do the research. Read: The Case for Christ. The evidence is there. Why is it that humans want to deny the existence of God? That may be the better question.

We know enough. We know that the universe is expanding, for instance. At some point the whole thing explodes because of it.

So perhaps there wasn't just one Big Bang? Maybe there have been trillions across time?

We perpetually have the same basic ingredients in the universe in space, time, matter, and energy. The universe expands until it explodes. Stars, planets, universes swirl into being. Here and there under the right conditions life blinks in and out of existence.

The only pattern that makes sense is a circle with no beginning or end. It is expressed across the universe in moons, planets, stars, and galaxies. Something dies then something else is born. It is that way for life. That way for moons. That way for planets. That way for stars. That way for galaxies. So we extend that out to the entire universe itself. An endless cycle of Big Bangs shuffling the same basic ingredients perpetually expanding and exploding only to begin again.

I deny the existence of the christian god as described in the buybull, the same as you deny the existence of the Norse god Oden, the Egyptian god Ra, the Greek god Zeus, and the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl. Mythology is mythology. And there is no evidence of any of those mythical, fictional characters. Except for the man-made tales from men that didn’t understand where the sun went at night.

Throughout the existence of mankind, there have been nearly 10,000 gods that people have believed in.
Today, atheists and true-believers agree on 99.9% of all the gods that have ever been believed in and worshipped as being false and non-existent. Accordingly, as compared to modern-day believers in a current god, atheists simply just "go one god further" ... as is often said.

An elementary rule of logic is that one can't prove a negative. The title of this thread might be "Are aliens scoping out the earth?" and no one could PROVE that they aren't, regardless of what we believe. It seems like almost no one understands this any more and logic is generally dead in the USA.

If somebody rose from the dead in Lexington, KY, that would be pretty big news, wouldn't you think? Especially if that person were an important enough entity to be tried, convicted, and executed by the ruling political and religious leaders of the Southeastern United States. One would think there would at least be a handful of up close and personal, first hand accounts, and it would be a matter of some concern to Pilate, the Roman Government, and the Sanhedrin, among others.

This is inaccurate. The question did not ask whether you believe in human’s attempts to name or describe god(s), but whether you believe God exists. You are stuck in a typical argument, offering the stereotypical answer, but it really has no moment here. You don’t believe in God. Answered. The rest was superfluous.

Here is my question, why did you decide to post this bait thread yesterday? What was your inspiration? Did you just want to debate this some more?

As said before...it is in front of your eyes. It is YOUR choice not to see it.

It is not wrong to ask people to evidence the foundation for their beliefs. It is illogical and a dodge to respond that you don’t have to do so. What is also illogical is to ask someone who believes in God to meet your standard for proof. Your opinion about God is not the bar for evidence beyond your own

For example, it is not logical to claim that my evidence for God is insufficient. Clearly, it is not insufficient for me and millions of others. It is insufficient for you and millions like you. Using your standard of proof is nothing short of egotistical. But, ego is a factor in atheism. For an atheist, the life revolves around something other than God. That thing is self.

As I said, this is one of the biggest questions that man has dealt with. I do not know what a bait thread is. My curiosity is primarily in what percentage of people would say there was no god. I thought the percentage would be somewhere around 1/3, but that was just a guess. I suspect it will end up being less than a third. We'll see. I left it open for 30 days.

I'm not sure I was inspired, but I have always really enjoyed discussing and sharing thoughts on questions like free will, why do people think and do as they do, the existence of god, is death final, do souls exist, do miracles happen, why does evil exist, do aliens exist and have they visited earth, why are people prejudiced, why are modern-day humans still tribal, what affect does IQ have on beliefs and behavior, etc... just to name a few.
I recently became aware of this forum and noted that questions like this are often posed, so I decided to do so.

To me, discussions on these kinds of issues are FAR MORE INTERSTING than whether the Cats will won, or not. Digging deep and becoming increasingly aware of how little we actually know is fascinating and stimulating to me.

Should it matter, I am 71 years old and was raised in and was deeply-immersed in the Christian tradition for over half of my life. It was on Easter Sunday, sitting in a pew, that I came to the personal realization that I simply could not ignore the questions and doubts I'd had any longer. Since then, I've been a non-believer, but still remain a seeker of all things that fascinate me.

It’s my understanding that an atheist firmly believes there is no god or afterlife or higher being or anything like that.

It’s my understanding an agnostic is totally open to those things but just doesn’t believe that we currently have an answer or that any of the religions we’ve had thus far have figured it out.

Is that not correct?

I reserve the right to be wrong, but it is my understanding that an atheist does not believe in god because of lack of evidence, but remains open to demonstrable and verifiable proof. Faith is belief without evidence. Atheists do not believe in believing, especially without evidence. Furthermore, my understanding is that an agnostic is a person who does not know whether there is a god and may also believe it is impossible to ever know, with certainty, that god exists.

I do not pretend to be right about the above, but that is my understanding.

If you mean adding an option that falls in between Yes or No (ex. Maybe or Unsure) in the same way non-binary land somewhere between male or female, then I think that makes complete sense. I bet if that option was added then plenty of people who responded would probably pick it. I get that you tried to make a joke because you're probably transphobic or just plain ignorant but your suggestion would probably be a good idea.
