Play calling , what happened ?

The conservatism is definitely on Stoops. I'm sure he has his reasons and in the planning phase I'm sure the go over every scenario for score and time to dictate how they will call the game. When Brown was hired he said each call comes in with a run and pass and is decided based on what the D showed. 8 or more in the box was always a pass. 6 or fewer always a run and 7 depended on look/personnel. However we never got to see that from Brown because no matter how many they put in the box we would run the ball with a lead. I think Stoops calls run heavy/pass heavy based on time/score. I just think that's the way he plans it. I'm not a fan of it but I'm not the coach. He knows way more about football than I ever will. That's why he gets paid the big bucks. However I still feel like he doesn't trust his team completely with a lead. Sooner or later he's gonna have to say "my team is better than yours and I'm gonna call the plays I know my team can run." There may be some truth to him not completely trusting his QB. IMO he's way too conservative but he's got us going in a good direction and I'm gonna trust him. I may complain during the game just because I'm a passionate fan. But I trust our staff and love the direction we're heading.

I'm not complaining about anything, happy to have the win. But this is two straight weeks that we have been a COMPLETELY different team from the first to the second half.
Absolutely lights out on offense in the first half, to not even being able to get a first down in the second half.
It's so apparent that it's definitely worth discussing.

There are just far too many that take everything that is not rah, rah go team as criticism. Their take is, we won, no discussion necessary, stfu

The over the middle crossing patterns was there why would you not do it with the way they was loading the box? As hard as they was coming the second half would have loved to see the quick shorter passes to see what would have happened. They pretty much sold out to stopping our run the second half. Hopefully Stoops explains why we didn't counter on what they was doing defensively. So the next time it happens we can understand the philosophy of running into the teeth of their defense.

The first half was diverse and had SC unsure about what was coming next , points a plenty . SC made adjustments , I get that but it doesn't explain the second half at all . We had some penalties , I get that too but just because you got set back doesn't mean you have to run the ball . So why the difference ?
I have a hard time believing the same person called both halves . Did Dawson really become ultra conservative because he doesn't strike me as a foot off the gas kind of coordinator . Was if a failure to adjust or did he really think we could run this thing out ? Did they fear Towles accuracy could allow SC back in the game so running was the preferred option ?

Does Stoops have a heavy micro managing hand and mandate that we run the ball under any circumstance ? I'm happy we won but we had more to do with that comeback than SC did and whoever thought that play calling was a good idea should reevaluate because luck had more to do with not losing than strategy did .
Field position dictated the play calls. With the lead and a good defense there was no need to take chances that would lead to turnovers. Did you notice we did not turn it over.

If it was simple then why did we try to fit a square peg into a round hole . I understand the summation of the game , the question is why did the staff not figure it out and run despite SC adjustments and such . I asked what happened because it's a mystery as to why they nearly threw the game away on stubbornly running the ball despite everything telling them they shouldn't . The play calling didn't even work , they just got away with it .

You are not giving South Carolina enough credit. They played much better defense the 3rd and 4th quarter after a pathetic first half. UK coaching staffs strategy worked very well by shortening the game without putting the ball in the air. Playing before a full house in South Carolina and leaving a winner is not easy.

UK will have to play better defensively against Florida if they expect to win next week too. Overall I was pleased with the way the Cats played last night. Go Cats

I can understand that, and USC did come out to play in the 2nd half.

Having said that, no way that excuse works for the entirety of the rundown in the 2nd half, and we weren't even attempting big plays in the 2nd half. USC knew what we were doing, they knew we were playing not to lose, and it made it esy for them to look like defense of the year out there in the second half. The goal line defense saved the game, and that wasn't the plan. USC is a 2nd rate SEC program when it comes down to it, and if we do that against any other SEC team, including Tennessee,we aren't even going to get a bowl this year. Any SEC team that could finish in the redzone comes back to beat us easily in that game. Let's not pretend our defense is some kind of juggernaut either.

I'm not complaining, but this is the SEC. We need to get real.

Look
- We started 2 drives with penalties at 1st and 20. We did opt to keep running the ball on those drives vs. just passing to get the first down. But USCjr could get to our QB with just a 4 man rush and I think we didn't want a TO to give USCjr an easy TD. They were also down to back up QB which probably gave Stoops reason to make sure USCjr could drive the field on UK vs. getting an easy TD from their defense.
- The 2nd holding call on UK was a big of a mirage IMO and put UK in another hole
- For those stating we never throw over the middle with our bad QB...didn't we throw almost exclusively slants the entire night (whicih I've heard UK fans lament we don't have in our playbook)? And isn't a slant "over the middle"?

I'm with you on all this except for your over the middle explanation.

A slant from a wideout is a very different from a crossing pattern, especially with a tight end. SC exposed that area late in the game with their big boy. I would love for us to look for Conrad a few times on that same route.

I agree Katwatcher SC's defense came out fired up in the 2nd half. Bet they really had their manhood challenged at halftime. Also seems some of us get an opinion about something in our head and will go to any length to make us sound right, facts be damned.... lol
I'll leave it with a interview I seen with the old Ga. coach Donnan that said(and I paraphrase). When a play works the coordinator is a genius, when it doesn't he's and idiot!!!!

South Carolina should get credit for making adjustments in the locker room and playing better in the 3rd and 4th quarters. UK should also get credit for making adjustments and playing better in the second half. See the OP's point. Both teams had the opportunity to make adjustments. But one coach's adjustments made his team better and the other coach's adjustments made his team play worse. We would have been better if we had just stayed out on the field during the halftime and made no adjustments at all.

The comment I made during halftime was that the good thing about the 2nd half fiasco against ULL was that we should have learned what not to do to squander a 17 point halftime lead. Well.....damned if we didn't do the same exact thing. I know that some of the casual fans on here think that getting pounded in the 2nd half is hunky dory because we survived and still barely won a game that we had well under control. My hope is that the coaching staff sees it for the near miss that it was and will take steps not to put us in that situation again.

BTW, I don't think the defense can play much better against Florida or anybody else. They played extremely well against USCjr. They actually baled us out time after time in the 2nd half when the offense continually went 3 and out and put them back on the field. If we are to beat Florida, it will be because our offense played the whole game.

Good post, I understand what you are saying, you should try that sometimes when commenting on others...[/QUOTE

In my opinion, SC made adjustments and we failed to make adjustments of our own. Which was compounded by some untimely, driving killing penalties. From an armchairs quarterbacks perspective, SC deemed ripe for the pickings for a heavy dose of play action in the second half. But hey, I'm just like you, a simple Fan that's wants UK to succeed. Very happy for the win. Go Cats!

Because they coached tremendously in the first half and the goal line D saved their ass in the second half. It's not bashing, it's facts. Deal with it.

That's pretty simplistic using after the event hind sight about coaching and conveniently ignoring team execution.

But I agree the defense, tired or not, saved the game in both halves. SC scored very few points in the first half or for the entire game. Neither did we. Give the game ball to the defense.

I hear ya. I'm not ignoring team execution. But the play calling was pitiful in the second half, again.
