This morning I thought I'd rewatch last week's UK-UGA game for a few different reasons. I wanted to point out a play that, for me, encapsulates the offense in 2015. Here is the link queued to when the play starts in the first quarter at 6:08.
1) It's 3rd-and-3. At the bottom of the screen you see Ryan Timmons on the line of scrimmage with Jeff Badet stacked behind him. UGA looks to be in either man coverage or a zone pattern match pre-snap.
2) At the snap, Timmons cuts inside and the cornerback immediately turns his attention to Badet. The CB is taking the WR with outside release while the safety rolls up to take away Timmons on his inside release. UGA is in a zone pattern match.
3) As soon as Towles completes his drop the pocket is already folding. He sees Timmons and goes to throw but #84 on UGA gets his hands up, and Timmons already starts to bail on his route and begins cutting to the sideline.
4) Notice Badet. The safety slips and Badet is free for what have been an easy 54 yard touchdown pass. Towles can't even get to his second read though despite UGA only rushing 4 players.
Summary
Here's a very manageable 3rd down that is a systemic failure almost all-around. Most will notice the terrible overthrow by Towles - but he had to loft it with #84's hand still in his face - but the failures of the OL or Timmons improvising too early didn't help matters.
