You know they have talent. Venables put a lot of good defenses on the field for Clemson. Have given up SEVENTEEN plays of 15+ yards tonight vs FSU. That's bad.

Seminole's D not any better but still.

Since when has any B12 team has ever had a decent defense. They’ve always had high flying offenses but no team has been able to stop a grade school for the last 10 years.

Venables was coaching with Clemson‘s top five talent classes against ACC competition also. FSU was down while he was at Clemson and then there was everyone else.

Don't forget Venables was DC at Oklahoma prior to taking the Clemson job. His Oklahoma D in his first year as HC has been forgettable.

True, but wasn’t he also at Clemson when their defense manhandled BAMA in the National championship a few years ago?

So, his defenses were legit
I agree, his defenses were legit. I’m just saying there are a lot of defensive coordinators that would’ve looked different with the top 5 classes that were rolling thru there. And the ACC was down.
I fully acknowledge that they manhandled Alabama at that time, you sir are spot on about that.

things to consider, 1 hes got what was left of lincoln rileys group, and they never played defense, 2 yes its harder to put up a top defense when you dont get those 8 5 star def players every year. 3 yes he coached in the acc the worst conference, i would give him 2 more years and then make a judgement on his job.

Good post, I do believe you are spot on with this. I’ll be interested to see where he’s at in 2 to 3 yrs. Last night against Fla. St. was a typical OU defense. But in all fairness, he still has Lincoln’s players.

And to Pappy's point, USC didn't play much/any defense this year and now have several defensive starters in the portal. I get that offense is more important than it used to be but you just can't ignore half of the game and expect to score 45 points every game.
