Whether he’s worth that or not will depend on whether or not he gives any value as a pitcher going forward. If he remains an elite two way player, then he’s such a unicorn that you can justify it. If he has trouble regaining his form or gets injured again coming off his second Tommy John, then $70 million/year is insane for a DH even if he’s hitting well.

For perspective, in the NFL Joe Burrow & Patrick Mahomes extensions that they signed in September are combined worth $725 million, only $25 million more than Shohei's entire deal. Ohtani won't pitch again until 2025. If he is still pitching during the back end of that contract, I doubt it is anywhere near the high-level he has done so far. Angels with Ohtani & Mike Trout on the shelf more often these days never had a winning season during Ohtani's career there. Read where a good portion of this contract is deferred so the Dodgers can keep spending money to add pieces to the roster as necessary.

Baseball wonders why no one watches their sport. Unless you’re a fan of a top 10 market team. Why even watch? St. Louis skirted that system for years but even that looks to be coming to an end. If you’re a small to medium market team you either get lucky with your farm system and hope you win a title in 2 years before the dodgers or yankees sign your players. Or you trade your farm pieces and hope you get good enough talent back to win with. Before they start demanding insane contracts.
