One thing holding Mitch back says Pilgrim

Not sure if this was posted or not already but full quote below….

“On the administrative side, I've heard it's not as much a financial issue as it is a lack of clear-cut candidates you're certain will be upgrades over Coach Cal. If there was a guy Mitch Barnhart knew was a fit, he'd make a move. It just can't be an emotional decision without an answer you buy into completely with so much on the line.”

"They're tired of the underwhelming results," one source told KSR. "But if you move on, who do you go get? That's the question."
Tommy Lloyd has been a head coach at Arizona for 3 years, he’s been a top 2 seed all 3 years, it was supposed to be a rebuild.

Someone else posted here there are rumors that Mitch has personal problems with Lloyd and doesn’t like him and therefore won’t consider him.

That’s a huge mistake Lloyd is the next Coach K.

This post is funny because the things he says in it highlight the exact reasons why you can’t bring him back. The amount of pressure on next years team if he comes back would be in a level never seen before

Maybe we do a "walk off" retirement tour, like Coach K and Derek Jeter did.. At least this way the university can spend all year prepping for the next coach, as opposed to trying to do this over one single weekend.

Cal comes back, makes some changes, most of which don't matter.. keeps some of these guys, hopefully Reed. We have a good class (but some will decommit if we return guys IMO).. we at least go into next year with a capable roster. Cal will ultimately hold this team back, unless he really pulls his head out of his ass.

I don't love it, but it's probably the best chance we have to do anything. I do like the idea of keeping guys like Bradshaw, Edwards and even DJ for another year, to SEE if they can improve in the off season. And then, hold out hope that we can keep Reed.

The major issue is that the UK admin has no vision. Mitch is the same clown who offered Gillispie before Calipari back in 2007. He's a play-it-safe guy who's immensely indecisive and I bet it takes him twenty five minutes to pick out a shirt from JC Penny.

They'll keep Cal around because it's the path of predictability where they can pretend that they're holding Cal accountable, but at the same time buy themselves time and not have to make a risky decision. Then Mitch can put all his chips into the "We are giving Coach Calipari more time to make this thing right. He understands what that means." They'll put the pressure on Calipari, but it will be a hollow threat, not unlike a teacher who threatens suspension but follows it up with a stern verbal warning that means nothing.

They'll kick the can down the street. Watch and see.

AND, not a DARNED UK employee in leadership can write a contract. Whatever lawyer drew up Cal's (The one I read that someone posted on this site needs to finish grade school...)

I have not seen this guy mentioned but I think he's a great coach. He's played fast and slow winning a ton of games either way. He did it with defense at Stephen F Austin and is now doing it with offense at Illinois. I want a coach willing to adapt yearly to the roster. I want a coach open minded enough to change his philosophy. I want a versatile coach a hungry coach. Not saying he's my first call that would be Hurley, Wright, Donovan and Stevens in that order but I think he's a better option than what we have and some being mentioned.

Unless Mitch gets a confirmation from Drew he’ll take it, then he’s not going to make the change. He completely missed on the Gillespie hire so if he doesn’t have a solid 100 from Drew then he can’t afford to mess it up again. He’s a free guy and whether we like it or not, that’s whom he’ll go after full throttle.

I told you all the Cal crew would be trying to talk people into getting on board on social media

Spoken like a victim of domestic abuse.

"He's a good provider."

"Who else am I going to get that's better?"

"He swears he'll change this time."

Cal is abusing UK with his subpar results. When someone shows you who they are repeatedly, believe them. We need out of this relationship, full stop.
If he took that bluetooth buzzer out of his butt, we'd all have the best weekend/week in YEARS.

If we missed on all the main targets and ended up with someone like Buzz Williams, I’d be more likely to watch and enjoy the games than if Cal is still here. Mitch needs to remember that we supported the team even when Gillispie was here.
The problem with this thinking is the new coach is going to want a massive contract no matter who it is. 5 years 40 million ish, so if you are giving that to your 5th, 6th option or so and it doesn't work out we would owe Cal whatever his is each year plus the new coach so we would be in an even worse spot.

with all this getting out for consumption by the general public, how does Cal even come back.

They want him gone, he wants to stay but they don't want him to coach, if he does get a chance to coach, its because they can't find anyone else who they think can make it to the second game of the NCAA tournament?

Bruce Pearl, man.

Would do the job for peanuts and would make us very competitive at least at the in-SEC and Sweet Sixteenish levels we’ve had to watch from the outside looking in. Would also take a short-term contract with no buyout at least to start.

Mitch is gonna call Pearl dirty and write him off because he took some kids to a freaking barbecue? Not too much of a stretch to say Mitch himself embezzled at least $33 million from the university. Pot, meet kettle.

I’m not dying on the Pearl hill but I am saying, you can do that well in a heartbeat. Feel free to do better but don’t tell me there are no options.

Nowadays, it is just dumb to leave $3-5 mil a year to chase $6-7Mil in a complete pressure cooker. Used to be, a guy making $275k would get $2.2M or something ,and take the pressure. Complete lifestyle change , etc with the money

I was told this afternoon that Cal has reached out to his NBA guys to get funding from them to go towards NIL and to get some transfer portal guys for next season.

Cal is operating as if he will be back next season.
Oh yay, you're back to being a fake insider. I still remember when you told me Big O was too scared to drive his Porsche and then deleted the comment.

When has cal ever shown he will make changes? He never does make changes. Every player in the world could return and I still wouldn’t want cal next year. Bringing back cal next year is already conceding a seasons away that is damn near a year away from starting

My point exactly, Mitch hopefully knows 99% of the fans want cal gone. How do you survive at Kentucky without the fans supporting the you? Simple answer is you don’t

Ah, the ole "we're a really mean fan base, so no one will want to coach here" argument.

It's the same emaciated, weak argument that Vitale made when BBN ran off Tubby Smith.
If you meet a jerk in the morning, you probably met a jerk. If you meet jerks all day ...

TJ Otzelberger has a nice resume and is in his mid forties and making 15% of what Cal is making at Iowa State. Iowa State has made the biggest turn around in the country from last year to this year
18 million to buy him out. No chance UK can pay Cal, Otzelberger and his buyout. Also plays a style of ball we don't like at UK. I do think he's a great young coach though.

You people on here kill me, this isn't Monopoly money we're playing with. These donors and boosters will want a return on their investment. They don't want Mitch to hit them up for more buy out money in a few years if the next coach doesn't work out.

Fire CAL get Pearl let’s roll for a few years. He would unite the fan base and try his best to win a title. Underwood at Illinois is interesting if Pearl has to much baggage

If you add older guys and get a couple back from this team is could be ok. I think what people are talking about is say Cal gets fired, all the recruits leave, and all of our current players leave. I think maybe there’s a chance that at least next year‘s roster would be bad with a Ho-hum coach that’s not a top 3 choice …., so maybe the thinking is you get some conditions from cal , staff changes for defense and clear objectives set, sit and work on the new guy for a while and have a plan in place . Tons gets done thru back channels in hiring .
Next year gonna be worse than the 9-16 team if we dont fire Cal

I'm apprehensive to post a positive about Cal, because some here have a freaking meltdown unless you group Cal with the worst people to ever walk the earth..

.. but he did make SOME changes last year, that most of this board really liked to see, and were almost in disbelief when he did them. The offense changes for examples. Even if those were Welch's doings, it was still Cal who knew he needed help here.

Do I think, hes going to fix all his problems, no. But maybe there's more things coming. And he has had talent like this in the past, and used it to stumble his way into Fainl 4's and championships games. Is Reed the type of player who could win games in spite of Cal trying to ruin it? I think it's possible.

Just trying to think of the few positives we have. It's not many.

You’d have to be on meth not to think Drew is an upgrade
Literally anything Baylor has ever won has been under Drew, and they have one big over the years. He is well respected as an x & O guy throughout the coaching community. Go to his Wikipedia and look at his time at Baylor, and remember he took over after a murder investigation, and even that nothing program was at a rock bottom

its not that Drew isn't an upgrade, its that he is so high profile that he isn't going to come here unless he's locked in with a huge contract, and no one is convinced he'll be a HR hire.

UK fans aren't going to tolerate him taking the team to a sweet 16 every other year while having the program not generating any excitement.

Fair enough I can appreciate you wanting to have a positive outlook, but man it’s been 5 years of crap basketball and crap results, cal coming back is bad for everybody involved.

Right now we’re close to rock bottom. We don’t have a coach of any kind
