Not Good news for Kansas

Now seems as good of a time as any to remind Kansas fans that Bill Self chose Landen Lucas over Willie Cauley-Stein. Didn't even bother recruiting WCS because he thought Lucas was a better prospect.

That's not true. Self made the mistake of believing he had Tarczewski in the bag. Didn't recruit WCS or another center. When he finally realized that may not be so he tried to get in on WCS but that ship had already sailed. Lucas was then who Self went after.

Yeah, tried to get in on WCS after Cal had already sealed the deal. Had never given him attention til Kentucky gave him a shot.

Typical Kansas though. You know, just following what Kentucky does.

***Um, ok - if he chose KU what were they going to do - kick another player off the team?! They'd've had to have rescinded the offer because there was no scholarship any more. So no - kind of hard to choose one school over another when there is no longer a spot available at the other school.

Have you ever heard of Tom Crean?

Funny thing about the whole Kansas thing. I personally don't have a problem with KU or Bill Self (most of the slurpage comes from the media), and I have zero problem with the players. So if this does become an issue with Diallo, I feel sorry for him. I remember all too well the look on Kanter's face when his team was playing and he couldn't.

But, as with many of you, it makes me giggle a little bit because of sanctimonious fans. Their attitude towards Cal, our players and our program is the reason for schadenfreude

As Bill Self said he could be just running out of time.

The real truth is that 3 star Zach Peters (6'9, 245 and high school teammate of Julius Randle) had more to do with the Self recruitment of WCS than Tarczewski. WCS said in an interview that KU stopped all communications with him during his freshman year in high school which was in the timeframe of 2009-2010. Zach Peters orally committed to KU in April 2010 and signed November 2011. Self thought much more of Zach Peters than WCS at the time. While Tarczewski received a scholarship offer from Kansas in 2010, by no means was he a KU lock to stop recruiting WCS during his freshman year. Self and staff completely missed the boat on WCS and thought much more of Peters at the time.

Peters being offered and committed is probably true. Tarczewski was the reason Self never picked up his recruitment of WCS his junior year and didn't try until it was too late.

This isn't true. Self tried to get in on WCS AFTER he saw Calipari recruiting him in his backyard. Caleb was never a lock for KU. Self caught criticisms early on for not recruiting WCS, and we kept hearing the same things from KU fans. Lucas is a better basketball prospect.

Kansas fans will ALWAYS try and make up shit after the fact.

Both are wrong. WCSs handlers basically told Self not to bother, as WCS would not be going to Kansas after Kansas attempted to recruit him. So, KU went in other directions.

It's funny how anyone KU does not get has "handlers" but I bet no KU players have them.

I used the term for lack of a better word. I believe it was either his high school or AAU coach who assisted in his recruitment and was the one who informed the KU staff that they would be wasting their time recruiting WCS.

Yeah because you know more about our recruiting than we do.

Everyone had Kaleb Tarczewski pegged to KU up until 2 months before he picked Arizona. Took Self a month before he realized that Tarczewski wasn't a sure thing anymore. That's when he tried to get in on WCS. Self was basically told no because he was too late, WCS was basically down to UK and KSU, and they were all offended that Self never gave WCS the time of day before then. It was a major screw up by Self to not recruit a 7 footer in your own back yard. We didn't start recruiting Lucas until after Tarczewski committed to Arizona.

I've never once felt Lucas was better than WCS. I honestly never thought Lucas would play major minutes at KU. I thought WCS would be a good college player as a junior or senior but be a better NBA player. Didn't expect him to be good as a freshman and great as a sophomore and junior.

Shall we break out the list of KU handlers?

Or the other stuff...
Loans to KU recruits.
Drugs and KU players.
Drugs and KU coaches.
KU players arrested.
KU coaches arrested.
KU players leaving the scene of accidents.
KU players ineligible.
Multiple KU players suspended

All this while Cal is at UK.

I'm more under the impression Self really didn't think much of WCS to recruit him. If I recall correctly, WCS had some eyesight issues during high school which made him look clumsy, etc. Give Cal credit as he saw an unpolished 7'0 athlete who could run like the wind and soar through the air.

I give Cal all the credit in the world for seeing the potential and helping him realize it. I'm sure Self doesn't think much of WCS either which is another reason he didn't recruit him. Was a huge whiff by Self.

its funny that Cal gets labeled the shady o
It's looking like Kansas is going to have a big let down this year on there recruits.

thats fine. they will still win the big 12 and thats the main thing. look at the talent NOT going to the league. no matter what happens....they will still likely dominate that league.

Ku fans celebrate conference championships like national championships. Believe it or not, they had a thread go 8 pages of KU fans agreeing they would rather win the conference than go to the final four.

Kansas didn't recruit WCS. He was great athlete in high school. I don't know if WCS even considered going to Kansas. I always thought it was a mutual decision.

Bad move for Self if he didn't at least attempt to recruit a kid that good in his own backyard.

There was a lot of talk that WCS didn't have a great attitude and wasn't terribly motivated to play basketball while he was in high school. He was definitely discussed on our boards, but most didn't think of him as a high level prospect nor a great character to add to the team. Yes, UK got a great under the radar player. I'm sure Self would like to have a do-over there.

As to the Alexander discussion, he was rated highly in his class but moreso as a college prospect than an NBA prospect if my memory serves me correctly. It was thought that his size would make him a matchup problem as a freshman, but that he would be undersized in the NBA. He had shown flashes then the ineligibility hit. It was a really unfortunate situation for the kid.

On Diallo, yes we're all concerned about his eligibility. Yes, he projects to be a difference-maker. It looks like there might be some games missed, he'll likely be in the lineup when you guys come to AFH. Should be a fun game.

If I was KU, I would have serious, serious concern regarding Diallo. This school has major troubles. 2 years in a row where KU's top recruit could be ruled ineligible. That hurts.

I didn't think Alexander was ever ruled ineligible. I thought Self just sat him to avoid the possibility of forfeiting that all important first round NCAA tournament win.

Cliff Alexander was projected as a top 5 draft pick by most experts before attending Kansas.

***I thought I'd heard that much of his family within KS were more KSU-backers (anti-Jayhawks). Sometimes difficult to fight against that.
