North Dakota’s Guard, Trey Eaglestaff. If This Kid Enters The Portal We Need Him.

No offense to any of the posters saying we have to get this player or that player. But, if CMP follow this advice, we will have a 40 man roster next season! I trust Coach Pope and staff to choose the players that have the talent to play in the SEC and will fit the offense/defensive schemes that Coach runs.

He's shown steady deployment and has good size, very good with the ball in his hands, explosive moving, can get his own shots. Has a huge range. Evaluating and prioritizing the guys and making sure they're a good fit with what Coach Pope has in mind will be the most critical aspect of making the transition from year to year now, in the portal area.

Gotta' spend the money wisely, and it's more than just skillset, has to be the right mindset too. The biggest concerns will be getting a veteran point guard and frontcourt help. Acaden Lewis is good, but young. We're losing a lot with Butler.

If I had to choose between this young man and Obi Agbim though, I'd still take Obi.

just saw an article that stated he has stated that he was going to enter the portal.
bet Bama goes after him, since he scored 40 against them.
with 15 scholarships, can't hurt to check on him

He scored on them. Did he guard anyone? That is what I am concerned with. They lost the game, correct?

By. Seven.

And led right for a decent chunk of the game and just stumbled right at the end. If that is the criteria for not looking at a player, you would exclude some of our own current guys.

Maravich scored on everyone but didn’t guard anyone and LSU never won anything while he was there. We need a well balanced team with a lot of quickness that can make up for this guy if he can’t guard. Not trying to be antagonistic but stating some facts. I would not mind having him.

Not that athletic, 42% from 2 in the Summit League, not much of a rebounder, not much of a defender, assist to turnover rate is almost even.

I think our staff can evaluate like few others, so if they want him I want him. But I’m pretty skeptical.
tough to judge just on statistics alone.............he probably takes a lot of shots as the clock is running out, he may be told not to get into foul trouble because he is their best player, guards usually don't average a lot of rebounds

Could be. I’m just wary of getting players who have already played college basketball and not demonstrated the ability to play defense. And I think you can get an idea of a player’s energy level when he doesn’t have the ball by looking at rebounding, blocks, steals, even if you don’t expect a guard to have a lot of rebounds. It’s why I love Mason Falslev.

I am a little bit concerned with grabbing transfer from low-majors. Maybe this guy is the exception. But you do see a lot of case studies, where guys try and transfer one-level up, and it doesn't always go well. Look at Mahaney on Uconn right now.

If the staff likes this kid, I trust them. But if we can get him, then I'd almost like to close the door on low-major transfers for next year and focus primarily on P5 transfers and the good mid-major transfers (Like a Dayton, WSU, Louisville, and Indiana).

But also a lot of case studies where it goes smashingly well. Dalton Knecht, Johni Broome, Mark Sears, Chaz Lanier and Grant Nelson being a few examples that come immediately to mind.

It's true. I think I'm fine if the staff wants to go for 1 or 2, and I bet that's probably all we'd ever have to worry about. But I would like to see us use the transfer portal for guys that are close to Kentucky's level of play... 2nd or 3rd option guys on P5 programs, star players for mid-majors.

This would be a huge jump in competition for Eaglestaff.. but then again, he did drop 40 on Alabama.. and his only bad games came against St. Thomas.. who i imagine probably had a great gameplan to contain him and/or a player who could really lock him down.

His two worst performances came against St. Thomas. And the third time he played them wasn't great either. But that tells me more about St. Thomas than it does about Eaglestaff, who basically got what he wanted almost any other game.

The Aidan Mahaney hype last offseason was always misplaced. He was a 39% shooter from the field in the WCC, and much to everyone’s surprise he steps up to the Big East and shoots 37% from the field. This is who he always was.
