No. 23-rated Wenyen Gabriel chooses Kentucky over Duke

Fox is just a matter of time.

I think we will have to wait it out for Monk.

Congrats fellas. We can't take em :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: as long as someone doesn't go to cryolina it doesn't bother me where they end up. And Cal will get him in position to live his dream

Thrilled we've finally beaten Duke for a kid. It's been a while - since Poy I think. Duke fans weren't even giving us a shot at him. They thought Maryland was their competition.

5 Star is the key along with an up and coming player. These rankings except maybe the very top 5, and maybe only the top 3, ever seems to be really good predictors of outcome. Plus if you read the various recruiting sites, there are several with much higher rankings for him.

I am excited in reading how he came out of nowhere the past year. That is an Anthony Davis type story. I believe we are better off with players entering their senior high school season still developing even though highly rated versus those who peak.

Finally, beyond ratings and talent, Cal recruits kids with certain personalities and he seems like a well spoken positive kid that will fit into a team approach.

Wenyens commitment wasn't out of the blue though. he's been Kentucky bound for a while and has been hinting at it and fisher is one of the people who was sort of in the know. and from what I've heard monk and fox are most likely Kentucky bound too..

Gotcha. My bad, I thought you meant he'd be the best in any year. I agree with him being the prize in any team's class.
No prob. I noticed my post could have been understood that way. Yeah he would have been behind guys like Wall, Davis, and Wiggins.

UK beat out Duke for Julius Randle. I believe he he was the last one. Since then, Duke beat UK for Winslow, Ingram and Tatum.

Since Cal arrived, Cal has beat Coach K for Wall, Noel, Randle, Poythress, and Gabriel while losing on Parker, Winslow, Tatum, Ingram, Irving, and Kennard.

Pretty much a standstill.

If Gabriel wasn't going to Duke, I'm glad he chose UK. Absolutely despise Maryland and UConn.

Nice to see my opinion of Maryland is seemingly favored by most Duke fans. I respect their program and those teams from 2001 and 2002... just too bad their awful fans had to ruin a lot of that and make me hate their program.

UK beat Duke out for Towns as well. I did respect Towns saying it was tough for him to say no to Coach K. He's a good kid. Glad he had an excellent year at UK and I wish him the best with Minnesota. Hopefully he and Tyus can team up on a few lobs.

I kind of view Towns/Okafor as a push, in that they were recruited by UK and Duke, but as it became clear that the other school was landing their guy, both of those recruitments kind of faded away as relating to the other program. Same can be said for the Murray/Thornton recruitments. Both guys were pursued heavily by Duke and UK, and both of their recruitments became mutually exclusive.

Does anybody know what's up with Jarrett Allen? He is like the only guy we have offered that we NEVER talk about around here of the 2016 guys and since he is 6'9 215 basically a stick i'm curious if Gabriel's commitment today ends our recruitment of him? I think it's obvious that we would much rather have either Bolden, Adebayo, or Maker but if they all go elsewhere are we still in on this guy? I'm also curious to see if Gabriel's commitment ends our interest in Simmons. If he was willing to wait until after Monk decides in the spring obviously we would take as the monk back up plan but I don't think he has the patience to wait that long.....and I think our SF minutes for next year just dried up.

Seconded on Maryland fans, I had friends that went to the game against them back when Nerlens was here and they came back with horror stories.

Have heard some similar things about the Uconn fans in NYC

That's fair enough. I'll admit I was hoping Duke would land Murray once I heard about his performance at the Nike Hoop Summit. I knew right then and there his recruitment would pick up and just days later... Duke, Kentucky and others were all over him. Both teams did just fine for themselves; Kentucky with Murray and Duke with Thornton this year and of course with Towns and Okafor last year.

Every time I think about Maryland fans, I always think of the whole JJ Redick episode.

Even though they technically aren't, I always group them with the "New England Sports Fans" which is synonymous with "worst people on Earth", non-existent until their teams get mediocre, then immediately obnoxious. There is never any in-between.
