NIL Numbers

I don't hold any grudges over the players getting whatever they can. That's the rules they were given. My problem is with the people that put the rules in place that allowed this to get so far out of hand so fast. Gonna be tough to close that barn door now without a lot of lawyers getting involved. You can't cap how much money a player can make in a free-market economy, though.

I get the caution....but what in hades would NCAA penalize a school for. All the legalities aside....it is full on pay a kid to get him. This is their rules that has been allowed and to let the NCAA off the hook a bit...this is what all the comments "athletes are treated like slaves" "NCAA makes tons of money...why not kids", etc.. So don't whine about the obvious outcome that the schools with deepest resources will get the best rosters.

This is not NCAA fault...we hammer on the NCAA way too much. This is real life unfolding in football and basketball now. If you wanted it, now you have it....the good and the bad.

We’re behind on this for football and need to close the gap as much as we can. My concern is next time we’re recruiting someone like say the Wade twins, they’re going to like us better, like our staff better, etc but at the end of the day that stupid ass UT collective will offer them $500k and it’ll be too hard for them to say no.

I’m not a doom and gloomer, but this is unlike any threat to our success we’ve had under Stoops. We need to address it to the extent we can, though we might always be behind some other SEC schools in this department.

Yeah. Getting sued again. That’s what the NCAA wants.
I get it. If I was a UT fan I’d be excited for the way your alls collective has gotten the ball rolling. It seems like the cat’s out of the bag and you all adapted to the new reality. That said as a UK fan I hope it bites you in the ass somehow.

Telling Wade he could play QB got y’all over the hump there. No way Heupel was going to let him be the only QB in the class.

Going to be very interesting to follow this over the next 3, 5, and 10 years as the market adapts and corrects. Some players will not pan out and will be a huge waste of money, and possibility of individual eligibility being lost. I think NIL groups figure out the latter quickly based on NCAA and conference red lines, but the former will be a perpetual problem.

I’m chuckling thinking about the Oklahoma natural gas, car dealership, and real estate boosters who would have showered Spencer Rattler millions only for him to be bad and transfer. I’m picturing Buddy Garritty from Friday Night Lights.

Hopefully the best players are getting most of it up front.

How do you know we are behind? What evidence? Just because our boosters are smart enough to not go bragging to Dave Ubbin & The Athletic?

We literally just months ago signed the highest ranked class in UK history, consensus top 15 for HS recruiting. I've heard enough implied TALK from CFB people *who know how stuff is done* that UK's boosters are right in it doing what is necessary. Bud Elliott, Steven Godfrey.

Hell ask the invading constant little brother Vols here about UK & Nashville recruiting, they always have a thought or 2 on that topic.

Personally I think NIL's are overvaluing QBs & WRs. Dominant 300 lb DTs & athletic freak rush DEs is where I'd spend my money.

Fair enough. I’m not saying we’re doing nothing, but being in the SEC we’re trying to compete against the schools who take football most seriously in the country. We’ve been finishing ahead of and out-recruiting some of those schools recently, but NIL changes the game we’re playing. Do you think we could give a $7M deal to a QB recruit who is an overall top 10 players? Tennessee’s collective did. If you don’t believe that then why would that kid from CA be going there? They have a good shot at a top 10-15 class. Florida will be doing the same thing too if they’re not already with their two collectives.

I’m just saying these are programs we’ve competed with under Stoops. Don’t want this combined with Barnhart’s cautiousness to be the reason we fall behind them.

Totally understand your worry.

I'm just gonna assume we have in recent years been playing the upper level SEC recruiting game, because we've landed some big time 4 & even 2 5* kids, from out of state. And I'm going to continue assuming we are playing the new game as well, with the 4* who have been visiting.

No, we won't be buying a 5* cali QB for $8 mil. Only 1 program in the nation is that dumb & desperate. Their stupidity will blow up in their face.....again. same as it ever was.

It’ll likely be a top 10 class depending on size. Carnell Tate is trending UTs way. They’ll land some dude in the next couple months.

You could make a player ineligible for their agreement with a third party. I’m not saying that’s going to happen though.
Mmmm.

And face litigation for “Third Party Interference with Contract.”

Having skimmed the NIL SCOTUS opinion, I see little wiggle room for the NCAA to govern this much.

That's what A&M has been doing. They reportedly spent over $30 Million in NIL for their 2022 class. They have 8 DL in that class and 7 of them are ranked in the top 100 or so. Unless A&M plans on playing an 8-man front, the DL recruits might as well grab a cool million before they hit the portal next spring.

Finally some reporting on market pricing:

…and maybe why UK is trying to walk the fine line between endorsements and inducements:

Why? This is like blowing out a candle in a burning building. That ship has already sailed. They would be better off allowing salary out in the open than trying to pretend that amateurism still exists. At least that way they can implement some control.

I can't wait for the big time tampering to start. Several coaches have said it's already happening, evidently has affected a big time player yet. It's coming though, why waste money on an unproven player when you can recruit a proven player from another team.

I think 3rd parties paying is the ultimate out for NCAA and programs so they better just keep their mouth shut and hands-off.

Kids are getting paid via the free market at no cost to the NCAA or institutions. Not only does it solve their PR problem with all the "weh weh...slave labor...poor kids are starving" bullshit...it will indirectly solve a few other issues as well.

One such issue is the OAD. I think a lot of kids will be more inclined to stick around another year or two now that they can make some dough. See Oscar. In years past he's gone to try NBA waters, and if that didn't work out he'd probably go overseas. How many 2nd round guys, or undrafted free agents would we have kept over the years if they'd had been able to make a little money? Almost all of them I suspect.

The same goes for football and probably even baseball. Though it's not a huge deal in those sports...I suspect a lot of 2nd day and free-agent projections in the NFL looking at practice squad would just as soon be the big man on campus for 6-7 figures. Same for baseball..."hmmmm...15th round, double A in Biloxi...or live the life of a stud college baseball player for another year..." now that you can get some cheddar for the latter, it's a no brainer.

I also think it may help the chaos that is the transfer portal. Kids being able to make some money could bring some stability to an issue that was much bigger and more out of control than OAD and whether or not student-athletes should be able to make money somehow.

Money can bring some stabilization to a young kid's life when they are young, dumb, and prone to knee-jerk, emotional decision-making which is essentially what the transfer portal has become...an easy out for cry babies who don't want to deal with something...

Kid: "weh weh weh...I want my minutes..."

Kid: "weh weh weh...I don't like the new coach and/or offense...it doesn't suit me"

Kid: "weh weh weh...coach recruited a stud that plays my position..."

Kid: "weh weh weh..."

NIL: "hey kid...here's some money..."

Kid: "GO TEAM..."

When this first passed who actually thought it would be player signing autographs, posing for pictures, or making appearances? The very thing that was suppose to no happen is exactly what's going on.

I don't know what the commissioners are going to do, ncaa is a name with no power. Court systems approved this teams with big money boosters will be hard to beat.

OU is now paying football players, men's and women's BB players and softball players 50k per year and are considering paying all their athletes.

What we are seeing is a draft, the only determination of order is the amount being offered. No reward for a bad season, you get who is left and if he ends up good someone buys him away.

What we have now was never really part of the equation. It simply was, if the school that an athlete attended was making money, they had to share that money with the athletes that were doing the work, putting out the entertainment. That is a perfectly fair expectation by the athletes, that should have been happening way before now.

I'm a sucker for Poetic Justice. I think it would be super cool to see ATM and Thug U buy championship teams and play the Championship Game in front of no fans and only aired on ESPNU on a 3hour delay because no one outside of those two schools gave a damn about the game.

Alabama will do what it has to do to be competitive, because they don't have much of anything else to point to. They be selling their food stamps to donate to the NIL fund. They shoot each other if the game isn't going the way they want. Friends at a watch party got into a big fight after a Bama lost and one lady shot another because she wasn't taking the loss hard enough. Bama is always near the top for team merchandise, they will gladly donate that to buy players. Arkansas has the alumni and funds too if choose to go that route. Georgia's big booster is a liquor distributor, we in trouble.

I’m an old hat I guess. I really don’t care to see UK get into this in a big way, I’m speaking on the scale of ATM an UT. If I’m going to watch paid athletes in that fashion, the college game will have no appeal to me. I already watch and like the NFL, no reason for me to watch paid players who are a step below the NFL talent wise. I watch college ball for players like Josh Paschal, they play with a ton of heart and it’s a team before self mentality. When that evaporates, I’ll do the same.

Same here, sports have changed alot the last few years, can't say I like any of them. I don't watch pro sports, so I guess my falls will be spent in the woods, we'll while I can. My daughter wants to go Bigfoot hunting. I just told not to expect me to be carrying a camera.

Big Foot hunting…. I’d probably need to medicate the mind before taking off into the woods for that one. Lol 😂, sounds like it could be fun though, at least you’re in the woods.

She has one someone cut out quarter inch steel peeping around the corner of her house. Takes after her mama. But in spite of the 4th anniversary of her 39th birthday, she and will always be Daddy's little girl. So if she wants to hunt Bigfoot, Dad will take her. What can I say.

But you are 100% correct. UK Football better get with the times or get left behind.
