I saw posted here last year, not long after Pope began picking up portal transfers, that he was working with $17M.
Some here thought it was legit, but others thought it was way too high.
I have no idea how accurate that number was.
I’m all about college athletes making money. It’s crazy though that if the $17 million is correct and you throw in a similar amount for football, then throw in the $22 million in revenue sharing and all of a sudden, you’re at $56 million going to athletes as compensation at UK.
It is a nuclear race. If we have $17 - $20 Million, there will be 20 other schools with that much or more. TX could easily raise $30. At some point there MUST be a limit that any team can have. I think the reason that a limit is not set is to try and avoid the under the table cheating that was in place here and every other school in the nation. For anyone to think we were Lilly white clean had their head under a BIG rock. I think we cheated more in basketball than football and schools like Bama, UGA, and TN cheated more in football than basketball. I'm not sure how Duke and UNC football had any money to cheat with.
If UK has $17million in their coffers for next season we should win it all.
Perry and Noah are probably getting close to nothing from that amounts which would leave $17 million for the remaining 10-11 players.
An example of what money does for a university sport, only look at Vandy baseball. As a private university they could offer the entire baseball squad a full scholarship. KY and other schools had like 13 school's that were divided among the entire squad. Now that NIL and full scholarships, every SEC team will and have passed Vandy in baseball. NIL regardless of the dollar amount has leveled basketball and football playing field. Bama will never dominate football like they once did. It was not just Nick, it was his method of getting every player a new Dodge Charger and a pocketful of spending money. That is why they were able to stockpile 5 stars two deep and the kids were willing to wait because they were well paid. Basketball 5 stars will be dispersed more now because of NIL at every school. It is going to be much more difficult for UK to dominate the SEC because of NIL.
Number 1 rule with NIL, never believe the intial numbers being floated around.

does anyone know? anyone on this site that really knows what some of these players here at UK are offered in NIL deals or are we all just kind of throwing numbers out there to see what sticks?

The way NIL is working, I think it's just important to pay the ones we go after and trust in Pope.
We're in the top 5 with anyone else where basketball is concerned, in the end analysis, money-wise. But there's places like Arkansas and BYU that are spending extraordinary amounts of money out there. So, in the end, it's all balancing out. Money is being spread out not only for players, but the coaches and the staffs as well. This is all still getting absorbed by the system and the boosters personal level.
We're looking anywhere in the neighborhood of 15 - 20 million realistically, here at Kentucky. More if a certain player they want to go after puts them over the 20$ million mark. I don't think anyone is working from a limiting standpoint, except what the boosters can potentially provide.
If the Craft's gave Pope's team 4 million for rebuilding, and players are actually asking for at least one million dollars ..... and apparently turning down offers for less .... then it's what the market is going to bear on which teams will simply want which player badly enough within roughly the 20 million annual budget projection level that's available at the top 5ish programs. A dozen other programs nip on the heels of the budget of the biggest players. Kentucky is a top 5 destination money-wise in hoops. 775 million total athletic revenue figures places us #19th nationally, according to using revenue figures from 2023. (see above link)
I think it's critical when the time comes to make the decision on which players to go after and get in early on as many in the future that can be identified and charted, and I like Pope's system. It should appeal to young players to be in an offensive system like Pope's. I think him and his staff will do well in the new landscape of college basketball and NIL. He's done beautifully already.
I thought the money could not come from the schools to the player. I also thought that the coach could not offer an amount but can give them amount possibilities from, outside the school, revenue streams. Thus the Collectives. I am assuming the Crafts are our biggest revenue stream. Is this correct or am I just imagining that was the way it worked?
There's no way we have $17 million to work with. Otherwise, we wouldn't have been outbid on guys like Lanier, Wilson, Davis, etc.
I know Club Blue is up to around $1.5 million annually. Mitch initially said our boosters pledged around $4 million initially. Probably up to $5 million now.
My best guess is that it's close to $7 million/year now. UK offered Ament $2 million, and Jasper's getting over $1 million, so if Ament comes here, 30 to 40% of our NIL could be designated to two players.

The truth is it's impossible to know exactly.
Too many moving pieces( players, people paying NIL, number of deals etc).
No one here is privy to that much information.
It would take the players coming forward with their exact amount earned to know for sure.
