Next years QB1

Listening to KSR this morning and they were talking about our QB for next season. Matt said he would bet that next years QB1 isn’t on the team now and that he has heard the staff already knows who it will be. Besides bashing KSR, Any ideas who might transfer in?
Beau Allen.

The current 3rd string qb at Alabama is from Martin, Tennessee and had a UK offer coming out of high school. He’s a true freshman sitting behind a highly rated red shirt freshman. Here is the part that’s crazy, after watching Bama this year, I think we have weapons at receiver every bit as good, if not better than they do. Anyway, his name is Ty Simpson, keep an eye on him.

Who’s Penn St’s backup this year?

Drew Allar is currently. 5* true freshman. He's seen action in every game so far.

The current #3 might be of interest. Christian Veilleux. Ended up #2 after the Iowa/Illinois debacle. Not as strong or physically imposing as Levis, but he looks pretty good.

He got in late vs Ohio. Announcers were quick to advertise him as "potential portal bound". I'd hate to lose him, but I don't think he stays. Question is, when does he leave?

UK is set at WR for a while, that’s for sure, the options will be there, just gotta pick the right one!

Then I would be looking at QBS on the West Coast. Scangs may have identified one of those 5 star California QB's who is sitting behind a 6th year, Super Senior, Covid year, Grad Transfer NIL champion QB who needs a fresh start......

Or....look no further than QB3 at UT.
Texas or Tennessee?

Are the backups that bad? I thought some insiders on here were saying Sheron would start next year and others were saying Hogan was pretty good on arrival?

I saw somebody point out a 5 star backup at Georgia might be unhappy no idea it is true, but he wants to come here I will take him

Brock Vandergriff. He is a RSfrosh currently running 3rd string. A RS soph is running backup now and has looked great. BV is talented, hope he stays, but I don't see him overtaking the soph this spring.

Agreed on all parts.

On Wimsatt...I sort of hope it's not him. He was never that great in Ky IMO and he's all athlete and pretty run the mill thrower. I don't want a Terry Wilson-ish QB going forward.

RB....I bet Ramone Jefferson gets a clearance for another year and will be starting RB with Wright fighting it out.
UK has to get the best RB they can out of the portal.
Jefferson has to fully heal and get a waiver.
Wright just doesnt seem SEC starter quality.
McClain is a good guy to have at Scang's disposal but is not your starter.
With Benny and CRods success, we should be attractive to the top RB transfers.

Yea, I hope we don't just roll with what we have. like you said, it's not a guarantee Jefferson comes back and even if he does will he be healthy? McClain is a good change of pace but not a starter. Wright does not look good so far. Drennen will transfer.

What about a guy like Texas backup Hudson Card? He was a 2020 class 5.9 on Rivals. He's behind Ewers this year and likely to be behind he and Arch next year.

I don't know...he looked like a air raid QB in the Bama game. All he could do was throw short stuff, run around a bit, stared down the blitz all day long, no accuracy deep, etc...

I find the HS QB ratings are not that accurate....AR15, UGA backup QB last year was a stiff, hell Joey Gatewood was damn near a 5*....and he could not win the QB job at USF.

It would certainly be great if next years Qb1 was someone already on the roster . There will be some growing pains either way.
Agree. The portal players are often in there because they weren’t the starter at their previous school. We need to recruit better in the HS ranks.

I recall saying we didn’t have any qbs behind Levis that would sever start here and if we did we were screwed. I was bashed.

move said all along the portal will be where our next qb is

You can never be sure how long you are set any longer. With the portal and NIL you have to recruit your entire team every year.
Redoubles the need for team culture and unity building exercises and activities. Make them feel like they are asking for a divorce, right? You get a stronger team, and probably happier players. You'll still lose some (especially stockpiled QBs) but it cannot hurt that our program is constantly remarked upon has having a family vibe.

Does the kid from Owensboro get to play at Rutgers this season?

Or is there another kid that we recruited who chose a bigger school that isn’t getting to play?

Or does Scangarello have a kid that he knows like Coen did with Levis?
Bingo! I think they know Scang is from west coast and USC is loaded with Qb’s from Cali that he has to have seen at camps and such . Williamson is only a soph so Miller Moss has one talented guy in front of him and one behind both favored by a coach who didn’t recruit him . Just a guess but a good possibility.

Is Beck the second stringer? Do you imagine he’ll start next year?

Imo I don't think they're bad at all. I just think it speaks volumes as to the status of the program and offense.

I do agree that if the staff really already have a silent type verbal that they must have a relationship with them. I just don't see it being wimsatt. It will be someone much better.

Based on who we have brought in, I don't think Stoops would like a guy who just sat the bench and never played. Even if they were a 5* and came from a superpower like Bama or Georgia or Ohio.

No better learning CFB than actual snaps in real games against real opponents. Levis was able to start from day 1 because he played a bunch, for a B1G t3n team, against D1 competition.

Almost all our sacks could have been avoided if Levis threw it away or checked down to RB or TE

If the staff already has a strong idea of a QB who will portal in & compete for the job, then it is most likely someone we heavily recruited. We already have a relationship with the kid, his fam, his HS coach. I've speculated a lot, with zero evidence, that Gavin Wimsett might come home to play for a winner instead of getting his head beat in by Ohio, Mich, Mich St, Penn.

After these first 3 games, is the bigger question for 2023....what is our run game gonna look like with no CRod? The staff expecting Moorman to outperform his ranking & be a day 1 starter or co starter with Wright? McClain finally live up to preseason hypes?
With Jefferson's Injury, will he be a candidate to return?

Certainly not going out on a big limb by Jones. We’ll return arguably two of the best receivers in the SEC in Key and Brown, not to mention a healthy/deep/talented slew of tight ends. Combine that with an Oline that will be a year older and more experienced and I can’t imagine a more attractive destination for QB’s entering the portal.
Tight Ends that are actually getting fed this year as opposed to the annual lip service about their usage.

Yes, but that was before the change in Offensive Philosophy. If CR can come in and get us back to having a hundred plus yard per game rusher, then I think we've transitioned from being able to attract a high profile RB to being able to pull in a high level QB.

It was Beck and the improvement from last year is remarkable. He is 15 for 19, almost 10 yds per attempt with 2 TD and 0int with a qb rating of 182. He was a stiff last rear, but that isn't the case now. I think he is our starter next year.

Based on how he has looked when he has played this year I would be shocked if he wasn't. He has been getting a series with the starters and has looked great. Checks down, looks S off, does everything you want a starting QB to do. He is 6'4" 220 with a good arm, Vandergriff has best arm in Athens since Stafford, very athletic, he hasn't gotten much opportunity, but I just don't see him passing Beck, he would start at UF, AU and maybe a few more.

I was talking about JT Daniels as your backup last year

Wimsatt is not a target nor one the staff wants.
Nor should he be based on the games I have watched him play in.
Passing is beyond suspect. Reading defenses? Needs a lot of work.

We may have dodged a bullet on this one in more ways than one.
