Well, if Gabriel is able to take defenders off the bounce, he's likely gonna start. JMO

Edit: As long as he can defend the perimeter also.

Knox working out with the guards is a good nugget, and not unexpected.

I think the plan will be to use him a lot like Monk and Murray on offense. Not sure it will work, but I think we try.

I may be wrong, but I can see some Ron Mercer in him.

@jrpross: Thanks for the reminder that these reports are always positive; I always forget that and then can't understand why we don't win every game by 30 points

Agreed.

Knox will play the Murray/Monk role. Diallo will play the Briscoe role. Look for Knox to come off screens a lot and Diallo to slash to the basket more. We will see if Knox can knock down the jumper as consistently as those two. If he can, then look out.

On defense, Knox will defend the 3, with Diallo defending the 2.

G Green
G Diallo
G Knox
F Washington
F Richards

I think that will ultimately be our starting five. Though I could see Gabriel starting in the stretch 4 spot, if he continues to improve his handle and jumper.

Washington might be the best post option. Richards is raw and we aren't sure if SKJ has improved any. Washington is a beast and might be the best bet for offense in the post.

If Vanderbilt can improve his shooting stroke, we might see him at the 4 and Washington at the 5 together a lot. That would put our five most skilled players on the floor together.

Lots and lots of possibilities with this team. Going to see a lot of interesting combinations this season.

Picked my son up from the lodge today @ noon and saw nick richards going into the craft center w/ kenny paine...i'm assuming for a little individual instruction?

If he's willing to put in the work, I'd wager KP will make a beast of that kid by tourney time...

I think Knox will be better than monk and Murray. Taller and has advantages over smaller players.

Why do people keep saying PJ Washington is going the play center? He can be generously described as 6'7." He is not Julius Randle. And what's more, we already know from Cal's coaching at FIBA that PJ looked his worst in a traditional post role. He looked his best defending in passing lanes and driving the lane or from the corner on offense.

I promise you people: PJ will not play the 5. Not gonna happen. If he does, it's in a 4-wing lineup where the job is shared, not assigned.

I don't think he will start in the post, but he probably plays some in the post.

Right now, Richards is the top option inside. He is very raw offensively. And he will not be able to play 40 minutes a game.

SKJ was less than impressive last season. If he doesn't step up, we made need Washington.

The other option to back up Richards is Wynyard. He has also been unimpressive in his time here so far.

Washington might be our best option. The thing is, can he defend the post? He is 6'7, but with a 7'4 wingspan and a 240 lbs. frame, he should be able to spend some time defending the post.

On offense, he creates a nice mismatch, pulling the other teams Center away from the basket where he can drive from the high post, shoot the jumper, or use his passing skills to throw lobs to the rim for our big guards. Also, there have been tons of 6'7 or smaller guys that were beasts in the low post. Barkeley and Corliss Williamson come to mind.

He is a great rebounder on both ends, so that should not hurt us.

I hope SKJ and/or Wynyard make it a moot point, but I believe there will be times when we need Washington in the post.

No way in hell does JV not start. He does everything and will from day 1 play D how Cal likes.

It doesn't matter if he starts. If he doesn't start he will play as much as the starters and Cal will talk up his versatility at every opportunity.

Keep hearing:

"JV will definitely start"

"PJ will definitely start"

"Richards will definitely start"

"Gabriel will definitely start"

"SKJ will definitely start"

"Green will definitely start"

"Knox will definitely start"

"Diallo will definitely start"

Heck, the only players who aren't "definitely starting" according to this board are Baker and Wynyard (but don't sleep on Baker, he's a shooter, and you know what they say about shooters...).

So I guess we are starting 8-9 guys this year. 40-0 for sure, if that's the case.

This has been up since Friday evening. I could be wrong, but I've not seen one mention of it here.

Note the emphasis on positionless basketball and remember that Barrett was likely in attendance.

This one happens to be a little low on good content because it was the first practice and there was apparently a lot of instruction.

Will be real surprised if anyone starts over Vanderbilt. Shooting wont matter he is an elite defender who can guard all 5 positions strong rebounder who can lead the break. Their is a reason he was top 5 before he got hurt. closest thing we have had to mkg since mkg

I think we will have 7 players that will get "starter minutes" regardless of which 5 start the game: Green, Richards, Washington, Gabriel, Vanderbilt, Knox, Diallo.

I think others such as SKJ, Baker, Wynyard are going to have to earn some minutes away from those 7 and that me be hard to do.

I'd add Alexander as a candidate to win minutes...I could see him get good clock in certain situations, depending on matchups.
