Will be intresting how UK, Given Mitchs tendiences to spread the wealth m, spends its money... I just don't see the basketball team only getting 2-4 million out of the men's share of the 20.5 million cut based on the articles proposed splits ... Title 9 gives a hard split of the cash for Men's and Women's teams... Plus the whole $600 clearing house for NIL deals.. I can see Pope and Stoops fighting for their price of the pie.

Ohio State plans to distribute their $20.5 million pool in two ways, Bjork says, “proportionally” based on male-female split and a “market-based approach” determined through valid market factors such as a sport’s television viewership, social media impressions, etc.

Though Bjork declined to reveal specific percentages by sport, many of the football-generating giants of FBS plan to disburse the vast majority of their revenue, as much as or more than 90%, to football and men’s basketball — the only two profit-turning sports at many universities. For schools offering the maximum $20.5 million of rev-share pool money, the formula means that football rosters would receive $13-16 million and men’s basketball rosters $2-4 million, according to estimates.

Ticket prices will be increasing significantly across the board. I remain among those who won’t financially support this stuff. When I want to watch the pros, I’ll spend my money at the NFL, NBA and MLB ticket windows.
Ultimately fans will pay the bill for this. Unless they just refuse. I refuse.

Basketball better get 4-5 million. Then we can generate 3 million or so outside that and have a very competitive roster yearly.

I think as fans we have to be realistic. To win it all in football isn’t realistic. They have to spend wisely to build a good roster that makes it to the playoff on occasion. Do you over spend knowing a title isn’t likely and it negatively impacts basketball? They are getting the TV money in football regardless.

Basketball on the other hand is more realistic. The spend will result in top level rosters. Title are more likely. Spend less in football to have championship level basketball.

UK men’s basketball means more to me than any pro team I follow. I hate that prices will rise, but I only get to go to maybe 1-2 games a year anyway. I’d much rather spend money to help our team compete.

I hear ya. I’ve been a fan for 50 years. It’s been a huge part of my life. Too huge some might say. But that amount you have to spend to help your team compete is going to grow without bound. This is just starting. The revenue sharing thing isn’t getting rid of NIL.

BYU just paid $7M for one guy. That will be normal before long.
No it won’t, maybe for a transcendent talent. but I read about that and Alabama and I forgot who else that said they would match didn’t have the funds on hand. They needed to get some from the collective, and have a marketing firm pay the majority of it. Most schools can’t or won’t pay that amount. Pretty soon it will be transparent how much everyone is actually getting. We are already seeing players at a Florida State saying they were gonna get 250k and did not get paid. The only reason BYU got him was because the Utah Jazz owner wanted him and bought him as a gift for himself for his Alma mater.

It won’t get rid of it but it will be where the majority of their pay comes from now. The rest may actually come from what marketing they can get which is how it’s supposed to be.

I'm not so sure. They were only able to do that because they have a billionaire NBA owner who funded that transaction.

NIL contributors want to see a return on their investment in the form of winning games. How often will billionaires fund a shizz show like the one in Arkansas right now when those teams end up missing the tournament or getting bounced in the first round?

Kentucky's a different entity altogether, however. We should be able to fun $7 to $10 million a year in NIL for our basketball program without batting an eye.

Based on Stoops' underperformance, it's clear to me that our NIL priorities should be going to basketball.

I tell everyone. Get new hobbies. I have already stopped watching....a lot. Especially college football. ANd I am barely watching college BB. I keep up with scores and tune into non-UK games for 5 or 10 minutes. Just not interested like the past. It has essentially been ruined.

Yes I am on this board still talking about it but I can totally see a path to freedom from this hobby in the very near future. I always was looking for an excuse to do other things on a beautiful fall day anyway. Hiking. Fishing. Anything but spend my entire day consumed with college football. As for basketball....we are never going to be on top again...barring some massive rule change like a cap in NIL. So save yourself the disappointment and join me in the transition to a new life. And there are a lot out there like me. When it all comes crashing down I won't feel sorry. These kids can go get a real job/career like the rest of us, or they can spend their life living pay check to pay check. No reason to give a kid millions of dollars because they can run fast or put a ball in a hole. At least not in my version of the universe. I had a kid paly in college. Great experience. Great education. Great memories. Yes that is reward enough. Then on to the real world. This NIL world is insanity. It is more insane than pro sports.

Better spend it on the football and basketball teams they’re the ones that make it maybe add a couple scrimmage gamesto help fund it.
With each passing development in the professionalization of college athletics, I watch less and less. The ‘amateur’ version of college athletics is gone forever. There won’t be anymore Unforgettables, anymore Junction Boys, no more Fiddlin’ Fives. The Jordy Nelsons of the world no longer exist. I’ve followed UK basketball (sometimes religiously) since the 70’s, but that model of college athletics no longer exists. It’s extinct.

I’m not getting Peacock. I won’t pay for ESPN+. And I sure won’t donate to any version of NIL. I still make my regular contributions to an endowed college scholarship (which contains a mandatory GPA qualifier), but the recipient actually has to earn that scholarship by hitting the books and attending classes.

The portal Cats, the portal Cards, the portal Hilltoppers and the portal Hoosiers are all the same: a collection of 20-something carpetbaggers who don’t give a sheet about the name on the front of the jersey. It’s the money - they only care about the money. To each their own, but how can anyone really care that much anymore about college athletics under that model? I don’t.

It really needs to be where it’s a death-penalty offense if it can be proven that a school gave any money to players that didn’t come directly from TV/video game deals, appearances (plus maybe radio) for the school, and merchandise with their specific face, name, or at least jersey number.

“Name, image, and likeness,” hello?

But I don’t think we’ve lived in a sane world for at least a decade so I’m not holding my breath.

I’ve said it multiple times but I’ve gone back to watching High School sports.

Bought season football tickets. Watch baseball and basketball. High quality teams.

Park and pregame at a nearby restaurant/bar. Quick games and an eight minute ride home.

You either get with the program or get left behind.

I understand the frustration over ticket prices if NIL starts to cost money. But sadly, college basketball programs need a NIL offering or they will turn into a mid-major. And a program like Kentucky needs to be a top10 NIL player. There's just no other way around it. If we can't spend like a top25 program than we won't BE a top25 program. Players will take pay days elsewhere and coaches/staff won't come to a school that's being outspent by places like Arkansas and Kstate.

Just curious, how much have you truly sent in for UK’s NIL?

Not much, and I probably should do more. I definitely need to get a new jersey for March Madness and I believe there are some shops where 100% of the proceeds go right to the players, so I will probably do that. If I lived closer I would for sure go to a few games a year, but tbh, I'm not sure how much ticket/concession sales help with NIL (I'm sure it's something).

For what it's worth, I'm not saying we all need to donate to the 15 club or whatever. I don't expect every family to just shell out NIL money, not in this economy... but ticket prices are going up everywhere, and this notion that some here aren't going to be apart of this NIL era, while simultaneously bemoaning how our teams aren't performing to their liking, is pretty hypocritical to me.

The courts are never going to hold any of that up. NIL of the future is going to be exactly what it is now.

The courts are never going to get involved because there are no applicable laws. What I am saying is that NIL is a bad thing and out of control because it isn’t even structured to remedy the specific original complaints, whereas it would be in control and a good thing if it were structured to remedy the specific original complaints.
