It was fun cheering in the rain. I loved it.
I’ve walked out of Commonwealth Stadium so many times in the last 30 years with my head down, thinking to myself why? Why do I spend so much time, energy, emotion, and money doing this? Then Saturday night, as I was walking out with a smile on my face, I remembered why I still love it, it’s because of nights like this.
I’ll never forget walking out of the stadium on November 3rd, 2012. We had just lost to Vanderbilt 40-0...
...40-0...It was a noon game, and mercifully it ended at 3:09.
We setup the tailgate and watched a couple of good games that started at three thirty. I remember thinking to myself as I watched these teams on tv playing, my God, we look like a high school team compared to these guys.
Listening to Joker’s post game show was even more alarming and disturbing. He was mumbling some incoherent nonsense. I finally said to my Wife, this guy is totally in over his head. He makes Billy Gillespie look like a genius. We both agreed if he was back as coach the next season we would finally have to make a stand and not renew our season tickets. Thankfully it never came to that.
Well, needless to say, Mark Stoops took over a bad high school team. I guess that’s why I knew it would take so long for him to build something from the incompetent disaster that was Joker Phillips.
