Looks like recruiting high level freshmen and having them on the court does matter? 🤔

The second part of your sentence is the key. Having them on the court, together.

The trio of Sheppard, Dillingham, and Reeves (yes I know Reeves was not a freshman) was one of the most explosive and efficient in the entire NCAA last year, as well as in UK history. Yet Cal only played them together like 27% of the time.

Duke also had a solid returning cast to put around these freshmen. That's the key but it's also tough to have both in this day and age.

2012 UK and 2015 Duke (and 2015 UK) had that but not many other great success stories of relying on freshman to win a title. I think our 2014 ncaa run with mainly freshmen was the most impressive 3 weeks of cals tenure at UK and its not close.

1. Flagg is a once in. Decade kind of freshman..sort of Anthony Davis ish..the other freshman are not exceptional at all to me

2. But they also had a dang good cast around them of upper class men.

So to me it’s mostly about a generational talent in Flagg and good players coming back is why Duke is so good

You can tell that Scheyer actually demands that his OAD's care about winning on the college level. Love 'em or hate 'em, there is no doubt that those guys love playing for Duke.

He isn't just running a 1 year daycare for the NBA like some coaches seem to do.
This is a big difference of the K/Scheyer 1nD bs Cals.

Duke always seems to play the right lineups, no mystery “injuries”, no free rides using the facilities while never playing, intelligent “fit” recruiting retaining/developing key high level role players and not pushing them out for a 1nD hopeful that doesn’t fit the team needs….and the focus was still winning college games first and foremost.

Cal openly turned us into an NBA daycare and an extension of the AAU circuit with zero attempt to build continuity with multi year high level role players.

Right and you won’t find anyone on this board that “loves ‘em.”
LOL! A figure of speech, but go on. I hate Puke, hate their players, fans, Ratface, and all they stand for. The media favortism they get is AWFUL for the sport. I just don't get it. I had Bama beating them in my bracket, but Oats already won his Super Bowls. But I will say they get players that seem to have a cult-like devotion to that program more than just about anywhere else, if y'all don't see that oh well. OTOH, many Cal players had devotion only to Cal, even players that had bizarre falling outs with him and transferred away or just quit basketball still seemed to love him and cheer for him after he left and just viewed UK as a pitstop. I want UK to get great talent, but when they don't put program first you get results like we had his final 5 seasons. Talent matters. Coaching matters. Culture matters. Continuity matters. No coach in their first season at a new school this season made it past the Sweet Sixteen. Every team in the Final Four so far has a mostly healthy team.

Yep, that was very well stated and the point I was trying to make that some didn't get in their attempt to call me a Puke fan. I guess being a "good" UK fan is to take subtle shots at Pope while continuing to praise "The Cal Way".

Weird… they named 2 other freshman that weren’t Flagg

Bro you do nothing but post negative crap or you glaze other teams. Go run to cal because I know that's what this post is hinting at.

Wow.... you really got my long term grift down. Be a fan for 35 yrs. Then upset sensitive fans who love mediocrity and bounce to another team.

You caught me.

Is this pining for the previous regime?

Because a freshmen led team is doing well in the tournament for the first time in a decade?

Good for Duke, I guess.

Nope. This is reinforcing the idea that we should not lose focus on getting top talent while relying on 23 yr old journeymen college players.
