More Cal to the NBA rumors

I agree. Cal has a monster recruiting class next year. It is likely that the next class will be Cal's best ever, which makes it one of the best recruiting classes in all of college basketball. No way Cal leaves the opportunity to coach such an extraordinary class.
Cal will retire at Kentucky..He loves the big dog that is him and UK....He left Memphis with the #1 calss of Wall,Cousins,Henry, but this class next year is his best ever and will be perseason #1 for the 4th time in a row

Why would a man who is making millions leave a program where an entire Big Blue Nation loves you with all their heart.
Where gymnasiums fill with blue fans as far away as California. To go to a crap NBA team where the players make millions and Know it all. thats not gonna happen

Signed, Rick Pitino:

I've been so busy at work I haven't had sufficient time to respond to this properly. My thoughts aren't worth much one way or the other but I have really clear opinions on this. In short, I don't believe Cal will ever coach in the NBA again and each year that goes by makes it more unlikely. As he has aged some things have changed for him. He makes more than most NBA head coaches do already. Cal has already built, and continues to grow, generational wealth for his family and charitable foundations. I don't believe money is a lure at all.

Cal talks more and more about where he can make the most difference in kids lives. Clearly that is at UK. The NBA isn't even in that discussion. I think he will coach at UK until he retires from coaching, but so long as his health is good, he's having fun and is helping kids, I think he will coach.

The only thing left, that my little brain can think of, is ego. The NBA is the only place he failed so an argument can be made that he would want to erase that failure. But here's the thing, every year he is at UK he has a shot at another title and he moves further up the ranks of all time great college coaches. I don't believe the gamble of trying the NBA again can overcome all the opportunities he has for greatness at UK.

At the end of this year he'll probably be around 625 wins. Coaching until 62 will put him around 785. That's where it gets interesting. He would be approaching the top 20 at that point, only 3 years from passing Rupp and 7 years to reach the holy grail of 1000. My math is a little off this morning. I have him projected to reach 1000 at age 69.

If Brad does walk on next year, I think that locks Cal into a position that he can't resist, running down the giants of the game. Think of all the kids he can help over that time period and the wealth he will have available to do great works through his charitable foundations. All the while satisfying his own large ego by joining the most elite of college basketball coaches.

Time will tell.

There is about 5/6 players worth leaving to the NBA for. LeBron, Curry, KD, AD if they improve the team, and CP3/Griffin and none of those jobs are open. He'll be here

Edit: Add Timberwolves to the list if they can add a legit wing player this year

Totally disagree with this in regards to Cal. His salary, his ownership of the program/the state, stability, wife hates the NBA, he doesn't have the coaching demeanor for the NBA, etc...

Leaving with all of this, for a player? Absolutely no way, players run the show, they come in, hold a team hostage, then leave.

I can see Pitino and Stevens going for a storied franchise, but never for a player - that is simply too shortsighted.

have we covered every team yet with these rumors?

Aaron Kall - Washington Post NBA writer Tim Bontemps says Calipari will be offered everything under the sun to be next basketball czar of Brooklyn Nets
It's possible that Calipari might go back to the NBA some day. I'm not saying he will or he won't, because you just can't predict something like that. But there is no way he will voluntarily miss the chance to coach De'Aaron Fox and Malik Monk. Calipari is licking his chops to get his next recruiting class onto the floor.

I know I've said this before but frankly, unless Cal went to a really marquee team like the Celtics or Lakers, I don't see the point in him going to the NBA and in fact it would seem like a demotion. At this point, Cal is the head coach of the finest college b-ball team in the country, and is by far more famous/recognizable across KY than even the governor. But if he went to the NBA, he'd be just one of 30 guys; doesn't sound nearly as special at all.

I think some forget but Cals program at Ky is a family operation. Like i said in my last post , if it ever came up again it would be his wife making the call. She even made the comment in coll ball you can change lives and help kids. In pro ball its just not like that. She is a school teacher by trade and at heart. Her and her kids are a big part of the program. Think cal would get out voted on this one.

Hard to understand why this is even news, Cal has said time and time again he is not going anywhere..

Cleveland already offered him everything under the sun, including a shot at recruiting LeBron to the Cavs.

Let's keep pretending like there's a chance he ever leaves for the NBA again...

False. He turned down Cavs job before Lebron signed to go back, Blatt was already hired at that time

If/when he leaves, it won't be next year and won't be for a franchise like the Nets...he is not leaving this monster class.

False?

I wrote "chance to recruit LeBron", meaning that I am fully aware LeBron wasn't in Cleveland yet.

If you're going to contradict someone, at least do them the service of paying attention to their actual statement.

Wishful thinking on the part of these UK Haters,John Calipari and his wife have made it perfectly clear they are happy here and not going anywhere. While stranger things have happened and some people are Liars, example Pitino right before he bolted to the Celtics,I can't see why Calipari would quit being the Big Fish in the pond to be a regular fish in the ocean. How much money does one family need anyway?

You can't see why an egotist would want to win at the highest level of his sport? Seriously?

Everyone talks about the huge deal Cleveland Cavs was offering Coach Cal for 10 years at $80million to be Head Coach and President. That deal is 8million a year and Coach Cal is near the $8 mil deal with his last extension and raise at Kentucky. The big difference from College to NBA is that in College Coach Cal coaches around 35-40 games a year and in the NBA with the Pre-Season, Regular Season, and Playoffs would be around around 120 games a year in the NBA. His average per game in the NCAA at 40 games for approx. 8mil. = $200,000 per game and in the NBA 8Mil. at 120 games is $67,000 per game. So, Coach Cal would still make alot more with staying in NCAA at UK. There is more traveling in the NBA with the amount of away games and also the pressure if not making it deep in the playoffs NBA Head Coaches are just fired now after a couple of seasons and especially at Cleveland with Lebron, Love, and Irving on that team. Coach Cal is making more now than most of the Head Coaches in the NBA right now at UK and will be hard for a team to offer Coach Cal a Contract with what he is now making at UK at approx.$8 mil annually.

But he never really gets an odd season at UK because of recruiting. Your stats may be true with the per game pay average but elite college coaches are constantly working and logging hours on the job with recruiting. I'm sure some more than others but we know our coach is a relentless recruiter and I'm sure he is "on the job" far more than most NBA coaches, especially those who don't make the playoffs. Is say that evens out that average quite a bit. Lol

Egoist? Really, the man has more humility than Rick Pitino ever had an inkling of.

Calipari has already been to the NBA and has stated numerous times he is content being at the pinaccle of College Basketball,Kentucky was his dream job.Somewhere down the road after he has built a huge legacy here at UK ,yes he may jump, but right now all the UK Detractors with their fingers crossed, hoping, are just having wishful thinking.

I thought they had their fingers crossed/wishful thinking and such for the banners to come down because they insist he's a cheater :p

Rinse and repeat. Rival fans wishful thinking. They've been searching the internet for another place for Cal to go ever since he came here. It's all they got left.

Funny we never hear every year about Mike Shitchefski going to the NBA,we never heard about Dean Smith,or other long term College Hoops winners going to the NBA,Rick Pitino wishes somebody in the NBA wanted him,but all the UK Haters on earth wishing together can't get Calipari to leave Kentucky no matter how much they would cream themselves if he did.

Funny, isn't it? And they sure do fantasize about it a lot even though some of them call him a mediocre coach and underachiever. Why would you be afraid of an underachiever at your rival? No way he'll beat a rival elite team in the regular season then do damage in the tourney, right? Doesn't sound like Cal at all. :D

I'm pretty sure Cal is holding out in hope that he gets an offer from the New York Liberty of the WNBA.

Speaking of fantasy worlds, did you ever respond to the LeBron/Cal/NBA point I made that you misquoted?

My apologies, I read and responded to your post before you had a chance to go back and edit your mistake. I retract my response.

I was almost impressed when I read this, thinking you have owned up to a real mistake (something that is rare on this message board). But then I re-read your post and saw you mention how I had edited my post?

There was no edit. Edited posts still have the evidence on an edit after they're done because they read last edited (followed by the time it was edited). You replied to my post almost three and a half days later. That doesn't fit your claim at all.

Usually I don't care about message board banter, but I don't understand bold-faced lies. Why would you make that up?

(I included what an edited post looks at the bottom of this post, since you seem unfamiliar with what they look like).

Sorry just had to do that...for my own laugh.

OK for real, I 100% admit I misread your post and officially take back what I said. You were not incorrect, I was.
