MJ: State of the football program

Seems to me that in the age of NIL it's more important than ever to have a high level of excitement for your program. Obviously Stoops isn't getting that done so Mitch needs to find a way to make a change. Not many are going to pay nil money for this crap so Stoops has dug himself a hole he can't get out of.

Mitch is paying a guy that has been better than 7-6 two out of twelve years 9 million dollars. Both should be shown the door. Every other SEC program would of fired the coach a long time ago. I know our program doesn't have the greatest tradition, but that is basically beating three Kent States, Louisville, and winning three SEC games and making 9 million dollars..

Glad this was posted, listened to it last night. Actually Jones seems to have very little faith in Stoops fixing this mess. Noticed, too, Jones took a pretty hefty shot at the staff, calling them below average. The "letting the inmates run the asylum" approach has been a freak show too. I think this is what E. Cox and Maclin referred to in their comments. I found none of Jones comments encouraging.

Totally agree with this, and nothing builds excitement like a new coach. I think as long as NIL is what it is coach contracts should be short and easy to get out of. A new coach is a quick fix if you can do like Indiana and bring in a successful mid major coach who will bring talent with them.

My guess for this coming year is Stoops asks his big money friends for one last haul. Then he’s either out of here or the problem mostly solves itself thanks to the new revenue sharing deal where the school divvies up, what, $22mil/year for athletes?

Waiting for the usual ‘But how many Gator bowls did we go to in 1986?’ from someone

Lots of things to be upset about in that. But there is one that is facing every coach in football. You get on a kid and try to correct something, he gets his feelings hurt and hits the portal. That is a college football issue not just a UK and Mark Stoops issue. Kids get mad, if early enough declare they are redshirting, transferring and do just that without any kind of consequences. If he is a pretty good player he has teams bidding on him. So you can relax things a little, have your players transfer or quit. I agree Stoops has lost the fanbase and a change needs to happen, but not for the reason I listed, his hands are tied there, and may be the cause of the other things.

So basically we paid the wrong guys and babied guys to get/keep them. What many of us thought but at least its basically confirmed.

Stoops needs to go back to the blue collar culture. Good news is it's totally doable. Bad news is thats probably a 3-5 year rebuild.

Shit happens. Stoops pretty much laid in on the line to his team yesterday: To paraphrase: "Some of you will be asked to move on, some asked to return. But if you're not ready to work, don't come back." We'll see how it goes.

Hope is some of this gets worked out during recruiting. Coach says: "This is what I'll do, this is what I expect from you." Some of our people don't get it, would rather use sophomoric names/terms instead of discuss. Change is needed, can Stoops pull it off?

No

This is a pretty ridiculous post. I CANNOT stand Matt Jones . But he absolutely has connections to the football program. For one thing , Ryan Lemond is very connected. He supposedly is Dane Keys godfather.

He only has connections via ryan which is via dane. Thats why his "drastically different" statement meant offense was going to be tumultuous. So i guess stoops is trying his legacy to the dead weight anchor that is bush.

Then he deserves going down in flames. Just hate hes taking the program down with him.

He does have a “relationship “ with Marrow . But of course Marrow is only going to tell him things he wants the public to know, lol .

It is a slippery slope. UK has to have elite talent to consistently win because all the SEC partners have the same goal. Finding the right elite guys that fits your program. Then it becomes are they really coming to build something to win or their bank account or to go to NFL. That is every program in the country.

Stoops is a football coach and a developmental guy. When the portal and NIL came into play that entire dynamic changed. I think every coach struggles with it but being in the SEC has really made it tough.

Good example they went after stars instead of fit. Brock was a back up talented but a backup. The kid from Rutgers again talented but not very good. There were other guys in the portal that may of been a better fit and more ready to play. The Oline was the main issue, but again went for players other teams didn’t really want to pay to keep. Louisville found good pieces that were lower level P4 or P5 teams i.e Texas Tech, Yale and Northern IL. They stood up against Notre Dame-Clemson-UK all had good lines.

There are good players everywhere but you better have a good handle player evaluation process for the portal. It isn’t just about NIL
dollars. I think they went for headliners instead of winners and got burned. Vandy is a good example of building a solid roster with just competitors. Now clearly UK has do the same but with better talent.

There was no accountability for guys on the field, never has been. Can’t tell you how many times over the years I’ve seen guys taking plays off or making dumb mistakes but never pulled. I’ve never seen a team so chippy when they can’t back it up, personal fouls have always been a major problem but the same guys line up the next play like nothing happened. That’s our identity and it all starts at the top.

I agree with the premise of this post. The transfer era has changed everything, but that's why recruiting and development is so important now. Stoops seems to have failed on both of those accounts.

It is better to take a lessor player with a good attitude, who will develop over time, than to take a wanna be star who is a disease in the locker room. Maybe Stoops and Co. have figured that out. It might be to late though.
