Maybe Bill Self was right in 2012…

Remember after the 2012 title game when Self said, “we just ran out of time.” It was easy to mock him then.

But after a couple decades it DOES appear that despite having more talent maybe than any other coach in history that the only way Calipari can win it all is if somehow the other team runs out of time before he can choke it away.

I rewatched the 2012 championship a while back. If Marques Teague of all people hadn’t hit two 3s when Cal was in a slow down and had let Kansas back in it, he might have choked that one away.

Very glad he’s not Kentucky’s problem anymore.

We laughed at the "ran at of time" quote from Self, but it was true. That Kentucky championship team was completely dominating Kansas and Cal's coaching the last part of the game was awful (and not unique). Last night Texas Tech didn't run out of time in an interesting similar coaching decision.

Barstool sports had a post showing Cals last 5 NCAA tournament appearances— it’s brutal . Like shockingly bad . The guy is a terrible in game bench coach , and happens to be an arch enemy of the state of Kentucky . I hope this was his best Arky team he ever produces. He had insane talent

Yep, we’re lucky the 2012 title game wasn’t a few minutes longer. We were looking on the verge of choking that one away too if Kansas had a little more time.

But.... according to all of the people on the television broadcasts last night; he's one of the very best coaches ever. None of them even addressed his dismal failures over the last several years.

PS -- I LOVED watching him crumble and fail last night! :)

It’s absolutely true! Cal is the worst at taking the air out of the ball and choking away late leads! He did it time and time again here!

He bogged that damn 2015 team down to almost a standstill! He was OBSESSED with posting the ball, especially with Towns! Not to mention, he was equally OBSESSED with getting Towns drafted #1! That team looked better in December than it did in April! Do the math.

A couple things I believe to be true. (Doesn’t mean other people believe it is true.

1) 36-0 in NCAA when leading by 6 at half doesn’t just happen. It requires some good coaching. I’m also glad he’s now 36-1. Both are true for me.

2. He has a similarly good record when leading with 4-5 mins to go in a game. Again, that’s been a lot of good coaching. However, I believe he doesn’t handle the last 30 seconds of a 1 possession game very well. Again, both are true for me.

3. Cal has been (maybe still is) an excellent coach, but it was time for both parties to go separate ways.

4. I was glad to see Cal lose. I’ll be ready to give him his flowers at UK in 3-4 years.

Regarding last night … Ark was up with about 90 seconds to go and got an offensive rebound. Wagner immediately shot a 3 on the kick out instead of running some clock. That bad decision gave TTech life and Cal went berserk.

Regardless of his past success, I’ll never understand Cal’s decision not to foul when up 3 on a last possession.

That was a TERRIBLE decision by Wagner. Like, wtf was he thinking?! Probably cost them the game.

See this post from last night’s game Thread. I do believe you can’t repeatedly beat Pitino or have the overall success he’s had without knowing how to coach; however, there have been numerous late leads blown in the NCAA Tournament that are mind-boggling and led to an early exit.

I turned the game off when Ark had a 13 point with 4 minutes plus remaining. Imagine my grin this morning when I saw they lost.

I think you're giving Cal a bit too much credit, TBH. Cal has thrived off of sheer talent pools. The mark of a great actual coach is the coach becoming a sixth player in second halves and crunch time, and winning the chess match. Cal let's guys go, until it's crunch time, then tries to be a coach. History is proving that doesn't work in his favor. He's simply not a good in-game coach, period. There's not doubt in my mind that he'd probably have some more marquee wins had he just got out of the way and let his guys go. Cal is an organizer and recruiter. He's not a good in-game coach, by any reasonable measure. Cal's resume is plump with just out talenting other teams, not out coaching other coaches.

Maybe, I like to think it's more indicative of Self being a loser, quite honestly, especially after Cal once again got the better of him, despite being a higher seed, in his first year at a new school, with no Adou and just getting Fland back.

Since 2019 Bill Self has made it past the opening weekend of the tournament just ONCE, despite coaching what many would agree to be the supposed best team in that time frame.

There are different aspects to being a coach. Cal is a lousy bench coach, but a master at putting together talent.

Anyone notice him getting on to his guys for the quick shot toward the end. The announcer was saying they shot too quickly. I was thinking, Cal is going to rip his guys for that and they will be in stall ball mode the rest of the game and give TT a chance.

I thank the lord everyday for the blocked shot from MKG. If he hadn't done that, Self wouldn't have run out of time and we would still be sitting on 7 national championships

Well, I was more commenting on Cal than Self.

But thanks for giving me an opportunity to say that Bill Self sucks and he's washed up as much as Calipari. Worse, he's an immoral punk who was deservedly sanctioned for lying and cheating and who has built his program on kids who were women abusers and violent thugs.

Anytime we can rag on Self is always good with me.

I don't disagree with the thoughts on Cal last night. He flubbed it. He already won his superbowl by beating UK, then Self, then Pitino en route to a Sweet16.. Mission accomplished. I bet he doesn't even really care waking up today.
