It doesn't matter if these guys aren't NBA ready yet. They were sold on the idea of making a pit stop here and then heading off to the NBA. That's the culture Calipari has instilled into players he recruits for this program. He wanted this university to be a training ground for future NBA picks and that where we stand these days.
I know MJ is a hot button in this board but he had a show (either Friday or Thursday) hour 1 where he was listing 30 minutes worth of facts and stats to counter those saying “CBB is just different with more parity” and it was so depressing and eye opening. Sure, the mid majors are better and an occasion L happens. But the top 5-10 teams are all winning the league regular season or tournament nearly yearly and the list of teams that have been to multiple final 4s since our last one was disheartening and way longer than you’d think.
I’m just not sure I expect a lot from an incoming coach, especially one of the young up and comers. Will take a big name for a quick turnaround.
Do you still recruit high-schoolers now ??
If so, do you refuse to recruit the best because they are too good and may leave after one year ??
Do you live with full rosters of transfers ??
Tennessee played 4 juniors and 3 Seniors.
How do we reach that level of experience ??

The lump sum isn’t how it works. It’s stated in his contract that it’s paid out over the length of the contract on an annual basis. You’re wrong on this and acting as if you know it for a fact.
Here is how the buyout works out annually:
24/25 - $6.4 million
25/26 - $6.8 million
26/27 - $6.8 million
27/28 - $6.8 million
28/29 - $6.8 million
The 3rd highest paid coach in college basketball is at $6.2 million (Izzo). Let’s say you bring on a coach and pay him $7 million max. That means you owe the following money between Cal’s annual buyout and the new coach:
24/25 - $13.4 million
25/26 - $13.8 million
26/27 - $13.8 million
27/28 - $13.8 million
28/29 - $13.8 million
If you subtract what you’d be paying Cal annually ($8.5 million in 24/25 and $9.1 million the following 4 years), you would need to up with this much more money annually than you pay Cal right now:
24/25 - $4.9 million
25/26 - $4.7 million
26/27 - $4.7 million
27/28 - $4.7 million
28/29 - $4.7 million
In 2022, UK reported athletic department revenue of $159 million and expenses of $153.6 million, meaning they had $5.4 million at the end of the year….
It would be easy to get boosters on board for splitting the buyout. They pony up about $2.5 million annually and UK ponies up about $2.5 million ever year.

I’m not going to go google searching for coaches contract buyouts but you are the idiot and uninformed one here. It has already been laid out very nicely here how the contract would be paid out in full. But not detailed is if cal were to take a job elsewhere his contract money is deducted from what we owe him. But as opposed to UK owing him 33.4 million over 5 years cal could negotiate a lump sum buyout of say 15 million and then go make 5 million or whatever he can get someone to pay him for however long he likes. He coaches for anywhere else for 5 years at 5 million/year he now makes 40 million for 5 years instead of the 33.4. You are obviously clueless and I feel less intelligent for even engaging with you.
He can be fired for cause and then we pay nothing. Like gross negligence. I just got through reading his contract and commenting on another thread. And if we did have to pay, it doesn't have to be paid all at once. That would be negotiable. After this season, it is $33,375,000- NOT all at once.
Cal has built a program on a sand foundation as far as UK basketball success is concerned. It's built on the promise of fast track to the NBA, first and foremost, not Finals Fours, and the tradition of UK basketball. You can see this with Cal's teams and players. They want to want to win, but it's the secondary focus, and you're playing against teams where it is the primary focus. This new foundation of UK basketball is on Cal.
Last year he watched an episode of a TV show that showed the gradual decline of a marriage and made the analogy to UK/Cal then, and apparently it stuck with him. Not kidding. I don’t remember the name of the show but I think Jesse Eisenberg is the main character.
I would argue that the championship that Cal did win, had a lot to do with the presence of Darius Miller on that team. Anthony Davis, of course.
The portal has left nearly every program on a shaky foundation…rosters turnover like crazy . We’re actually in better shape than most on that end , because we’re going to get 3-4 top 15-20 recruits every yr . Some programs have 3-4 portal out , with lesser reinforcements on the way . Throw in free agency with NIL and everyone is shaky

We had plenty of experience those two years. It's coaching, plain and simple.
It's recruited that way. Even if kids desire to stay they get pushed that way. After 2012 that became he and Ellen's mission. He had won his championship and as far as he was concerned his job was done for UK was done
