Malik Newman/MSU on ESPN...

Kentucky isn't for everybody

He wanted to be "the man" and Cal couldn't promise him that. Glad we didn't get him and got Murray instead.

This would have been Monk next year if he'd picked Arkansas.

I think Hog fans are much more supportive of their basketball team than MSU fans, but the on-court results would have been much the same.

Watching Newman's career arc this year may be the ultimate testament to why you should want to play on a team with other good players. With the talent MSU is bringing in next year, they should be much improved, but this year they are looking pretty mediocre.

Yep, Enjoy failure Malik. And he's no sure thing in the NBA either. when are these kids going to learn from looking at kids like Shabazz or Newman??? He could have came here and been drafted in the top 5. But thank God he didn't come here. We got a much better player in J-Dawg that we wouldn't have had otherwise. And I do think Newman would have went top 5 had he came here. Murray's still the superior player. We didn't need you Malik. And we're glad you didn't come here!!! Have fun in that dirty state of Mississippi getting no recognition. And not being treated like a king. LOL. Bet he already wishes he had a re-do. LMAO.

It is amazing how much of a difference it makes by going to a school like MSU. No one in the county cares about him and had he come here he would be getting tons of talk. Choosing to go there probably cost him millions and millions of dollars. I'm not saying everyone has to go to UK, because they can't, but eventually you would think players would realize most guys cannot just go anywhere and still be an NBA high draft pick lock. Like others said though, worked out perfect for us because Murray is much better.

No one said he isn't good. He just went to a dumpster fire program.

No, but someone told him to "enjoy failure" and that's he's no sure thing for the NBA. The failure thing is probably true from a team perspective but Malik Newman isn't going to have any problem making it to the NBA.

Has his name been discussed as a OAD? I lost track of him after he committed to MSU.

I just find games hard to watch or get excited about when the stands are empty. I don't care if UK played a game in Antarctica, our fans would represent better than what I'm seeing at this game.

If I was a player, I can't imagine that not being important to me.

Thought Bill Self said that if you are NBA ready than school you choose doesn't make any difference. Might want to ask the 5 stars that have chosen UL over the years and this Newman kid. I mean did that guy look like a guy who is a lottery pick or even on Isiah Briscoe's level. I mean Briscoe was never considered top 5 player, top 15-20 but not Newman level. Yeah I think school and coach makes a difference. Murray would be considered on level of Newman and Brown from last year's class, these guys are so much better looking than if you go to Pork Chop state or squander your talent under some no count coach or school.
IMO

I hope he does good at msu besides playing us but his draft stock will plummet. That's just the honest truth.

They worked hard for that loss. Snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory.
Had a 4 point lead, Tech shot a three and it glanced off the rim and was bouncing out of bounds. An MSU player raced towards the sideline and dove after it and ended up throwing it out of bounds. What???? How stupid was that? Well, T-Tech got threw the ball in and hit a 3. MSU lost by 2.

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it......or if a lottery pick scores in an empty arena and nobody is there to watch it....

It's obvious at this point that a decent portion of fans wanted Newman extremely bad . There have already been multiple threads about his performance with subsequent comments that want him to regret his choice to play at MSU . Why anyone has the need to feel better by hoping a player regrets his decision is so Arkansas , especially when you ended up with a better player . It's clear that there will be a year long Newman watch , to what end ?

Florida State just lost to Hofstra and Duke struggling with VCU. Not sure the ACC is that much better.

Dont see Newman as a surefire NBA lifer...his reach per his size is average, meaning he wont play big, considering the ave height in the NBA is 6'7 and he is up against his own anatomy. That and he isnt not a PG.

Very young into the season...but so far.

Newman is shooting 38%FG, 2 reb, 2.5 ass and 3.5 TO, 0 steals. Those are a poor man's Aaron Harrison's stat line. I predict on the season Newman will be a high volume shooter that shoots' in low 40's/high 30's for shooting percentage...he'll have more TOs than assists. And won't make NCAA for sure.

Yawn on his NBA potential.

MSU is 1-3 now. Man the SEC sucks outside of us.
What else is new? The majority of SEC teams haven't even been to a final four in the last fifty years. It has always been a traditional football conference.

I wonder if Malik's ego made him believe he was so good people would flock to watch him play or if he is okay with playing in empty arenas.

He made his choice and they will be fine once they gel as a team. No need to deride a kid who picked MSU over UK. Win-Win for all

I think where a player plays, how many fans there usually are, and how often they are on TV means absolutely nothing to the NBA or his prospects. What does matter though is who's coaching him. Cal has proven the ability and the willingness to help our guys develop well, and as quickly as possible. That's what Newman missed out on when he chose MSU, and that's what could affect his draft status next June. Not how many people see him play because the scouts will see him or anyone else wherever they play. I believe the 3rd pick in last years draft played in China for goodness sakes. How many times was he on national TV?

I mean, it could just be the players, and I'm certainly not saying he's as good as Cal ... but Ben Howland's resume is pretty nice with regards to getting his guards drafted and playing well in the NBA

I think it's that some of us are rather amazed that he chose this route. I, personally, defended his choice early on because Howland IS a FF coach (three in a row at UCLA). I'm sure Howland sold that - and did a bit of negative recruiting to get Newman there. I have nothing against Newman - and hope he can chase his dream. But that team will do next to nothing, IMO and that hurts his draft stock. He could have shone here.

We did end up with better players, I agree/

Draftexpress has Newman at #15 of their 2016 mock draft.

Which has already fallen from a former top 6 projection. I bet he falls even more by SEC play and ends up between 15 and the early 20s when draft night actually happens. At one point, Newman was a top 10 lock because he has real NBA skills with his quickness, finishing, and ability to create his own shot. Meanwhile, Tyler Ulis is looking like the best guard in the country.

Just another footnote for those saying Kentucky doesn't make a difference.
