When I saw Pope was pursuing Lowe, I was skeptical but I want to share why having a sub-30 percent three point shooter on the roster is going to result in the 2026 Wildcats being a much better shooting team than the 2025 Cats. I’ve been watching film on Jaland Lowe —- full games, not highlights. You never get the right feel for how someone plays in highlights, so I recommend watching full games. Here are some takeaways I had about Lowe.

- He has elite, elite, ELITE speed. Even at moderate speed, he was the fastest player on the court. He’s just as fast with the ball. Seeing Lowe speed through two or three defenders in a single motion is routine for him and fans are going to be surprised just how easily he beats defenders off the bounce.

- He has elite court vision and passing. He can make every pass imaginable and even some that no one should ever need to make. I watched him, on one play, beat two defenders off the dribble from the top of the key and get two feet into the left side of the paint. He then entered into a double-clutch acrobatic layup, felt the attention of help defenders and launched a perfectly accurate overhead pass across the court to the opposite corner for a wide open three. Even my explanation does no justice, go watch it yourself.

- Jaland Lowe, on day one, is going to be one the best pure dribblers/ball handlers you’ve seen in a Kentucky uniform. I thought about whether this is hyperbole and decided it really isn’t. We have had a select few players that have had the deadly arsenal of dribble moves this guy has. Expect ankle breakers and expect them very often.

- I will get the concerns out of the way because I know some people will ask about his defense and his shooting. I’m not a professional scout but his defense didn’t impress me on tape. To be fair, he was guarding Chucky Hepburn a lot of the game and that’s a tough assignment for anyone but I’ll note that he got into poor position more than a couple times and it led to easy drives.

- As for his shot, you see that he has a little Mark Sears in his shot mechanics. The reason why he misses so much is he doesn’t finish the shots. In other words, he is prone to lacking follow through and it results in a lot of “rushed” shots. Already have seen some YouTube seminars about shooting from Pope from back in his earlier coaching days. I have no worries the mechanical issue will be fixed because this is a major emphasis by Pope.

- All of that said, even if Lowe ends up let’s say a 32 percent three point shooter, it won’t hurt. Why? The guy is so fast and so confident with the ball, is such an amazing passer that you cannot just sag the guy. One blink and he is already in the paint. One inch of space and a teammate has already been delivered the ball for an open look.

Last year, our starting rotation only had one player you’d consider a pure shooter and he was in a slump for half the season (Jaxson Robinson). You had a sixth man (Koby Brea) who was an elite shooter but was fairly one dimensional. That’s really about it. Other guys could make shots but weren’t necessarily shooters. I bet you this season our team three point percentage is slightly lower but the attempts are going to be through the roof. The roster still has some work left but I’m very confident we are about to have a blast watching Jaland Lowe with this team.

Nice analysis. Good work! I'm especially glad to hear you say he has a lot of speed, because I thought he looked a bit slow in the highlights. So, that's good to hear.
Boy, go watch the tape. You won’t believe your eyes. Pope got a Ferrari with this one. No more trouble getting shots if the offense bogs down with this guy

I posted in the other thread, but his HS shooting numbers were more than fine. 2021 he shot like 54% on 90 3-point attempts. I think last year at Pitt was an anomaly. Their team was garbage and Capel doesn't deserve to have a job in D1.
That makes sense with what I saw too. As the game got late, he started to force shots to try to will his team to victory. Other than that, hi shot looked good, just needs to develop habits on follow through. Not surprised he could shoot in HS.

He is a very good guard. The concern is the ACC wasn’t very good defensively. The SEC wasn’t great either so it may not matter. He was good against Hepburn offensively which is encouraging but Hepburn wore him out as well. Plus he does get lost defensively.

It is hard to project these players but he is a scoring PG. He can distribute. No where near the defender Butler was. I think they really need a rim protector. I don’t care how good teams are offensively you better defend. UK is going to be good offensively in Pope’s system but they have to make a jump defensively to be legit contenders.

His athletic ability will give him a TON of room to improve his defense. With the kind of speed you have mentioned, Insee no reason for him not to become great on both ends of the floor.

His shot mechanics aren’t as bad as Owen’s and he could knock the 3 down when open. I am just glad we have a dude that can create space for others and is a great passer. He can lob the ball too, something even Butker struggled doing.

I have to see him play but sounds like wheeler with size. If he plays defense though learns to defend hopefully pope will put an emphasis on defense day one. I’m not a big fan of zippy point guards unless they can hit the open 3. That is a must

That's me. Speed at PG is crucial imo. Wall had it. Fox had it. Lowe having it is very encouraging. Pentwater and kick UT out or score. Something UK hasn't had much of lately. Butler was pretty good at it but not with speed as much as with force.

Wheeler doesn’t have this type of speed, handle or size. Wheeler didn’t have the finishing ability either. Lowe can finish under heavy duress and I’ll go ahead and tell you teams will pay for sagging him. Not the same as Wheeler although I understand your point. Think more Cliff Hawkins on offense but with a lot more midrange to his game and even more elite passing and dribbling

Thanks for taking the time to do this. He seems to be exactly what I want out of a point guard. From what I have watched he is a much better 3 pt shooter than his % when he has time. Shot actually looks good.

Agreed. Get him to work on the follow through and he’s going to be a serious problem. Probably an NBA player

If he had played in the MEAC, you can still see a potential NBA player here. I’ll put it to you this way: as much as I loved the team last year, we didn’t have a single player with this much natural talent. That’s not to say Lowe gets it all put together immediately but you go watch the tape and see what you think. You might be surprised

I saw much of the same thing so I agree with everything you said

Some analysts had Lowe projected as a potential 1st round draft pick after the first couple of games this season. Now, I don't care about that generally, as can be seen year after year draft position and college impact on winning games don't necessarily correlate (sometimes at all), but the point they were making was his talent and upside were high.

Ok I didn’t know that. Makes a lot of sense. NBA player written all over him 👍

I think the biggest thing that will help Lowe is he won’t have such a high usage rate here.

Lowe's godfather is the great point guard John Lucas II, another lefty. Lucas was a first team All-American for Lefty Driesell at Maryland and the #1 overall pick in the 1976 NBA draft.

Was Miami in the mix for him?

A bit of Larry Johnson and Dwight Anderson thrown in for good measure

This is a good post and I hope that Lowe turns out to be great for us.

But I feel like if you have to sell a recruit, then maybe there's some warning flags this may not pan out.

Sure the people on the negative side could just be wrong about the guy but the mere fact there's negative ppl means that there's some possible flags here.
I hear you. Don’t be sold on anything. Watch the tape and formulate your own conclusions. Many fans are casuals, no offense intended, and if a player isn’t a household name to them or if they heard something the don’t like about a player, they hold a surface level agnosticism. That’s not how to evaluate. Judge the film. This player is going to be a big, big deal for us next year.

Well there was a certain amount of selling that took place for about 3/4 of last year's team
to about 1/2 the board if you recall

Agreed on those points. But this has essentially become free agency. Compare it to NFL FA…if a player hits FA, there are usually flags there.

Any player we add from here will be that way imo.
