Maclin is returning

Really glad to see this. Though we have to understand there will be another round of this after Spring practice. But I really hope he steps up as a senior leader. If he was able to point to lack of discipline and leadership issues it means he wants that in a coach and he can become that leader in the locker room he says was lacking. Hard for a first year guy to step into that role regardless of class level. Now’s his turn to be that veteran leader.

Spring portal is more for guys that don’t crack the 2 deep out of spring than anything else . Of course you could have NIL spats, etc

Agree, but in our lame duck situation, we might have some guys go “yeah, we’re still gonna suck, I’m outa here”

A couple of right portal picks , and the WR room could be ok. Couple of really good recruits at WR signed
It really all comes down to the O line. The line is everything. No line- no running game. No running game = predictable passing game. No line - qb can’t get throw off and receivers can finish routes. No line - no touches for receivers and no they are unhappy. No line - TE’s stay tight and block and now they want to transfer. All the receivers want to tramsfer because their talent is wasted. No qb wants to come here and get killed and the qb’s we have want out.

Our NIL money should be buying lineman first and foremost.

Hope this means we are in on a really good QB from the portal!!!

I think it ultimately will , with the linemen . They say Trayanum wants come back ( hopefully 100%) at RB and the emergence of Wilcox has me feeling ok about the RB potential next yr. Trayanum was a Doak Walker candidate prior to injury and was reallly good at OSU in big ten ….a conference well known for defense .
Getting the line in order and much improved is job 1 before most of it matters , tho

Absolutely, NIL money to buy OL. Hopefully the staff has determined the type of offense we will run next year. Now lets go after the OLmen who excel in such a scheme.

Excited Oh Yeah GIF

Yeah oline and qb. We don’t necessarily have to get all star stud qb with humongous ceiling but somebody with a high floor that has had plenty of snaps elsewhere. Something dependable with moxie is fine. If we go into next year with Boley slated to start it would be foolish.

This portal will look different this year . There will be a late wave of guys from playoff teams that are unhappy, looking for more $ or not playing as much as they’d like . Lots of rosters with lots of highly recruited players on them

Hip-hip-hooray!

If Stoops is coming back and we've lost Key and Brown, it doesn't matter. 3-9 next season. If Barnhart had some balls, he'd fire Stoops and hire Sumrall.

Barnhart is killing the football program, again.
Yes he should. No nads. He is the one who signed him to that ridiculous contract.

Only because the other employer decided not to take him. If Stoops was giving 100% this past season I'd hate to see him checked out.
It's a moot point, that whole episode is over and done with. Whether you like it or not or I like it or not, Stoops will be the UK coach in 2025. He'll now attempt to completely change the culture of UK football. Can he do it? Rowland seems to have little faith in what he's trying to do. I think he has an uphill fight but it's the only game in town. If he has success he deserves platitudes, if he fails his career will be over. Since I don't pay him or hire/fire I'm going to sit back and watch, hope for the best but expect little. Maybe I'll be surprised.

Exactly. Good post

This is what you want in the portal. My guess is Key and Brown wanted more because the market probably would bear it they let them go.

I honestly don’t understand the WR market. Like UGA supposedly throwing $$$ at Key. His production doesn’t support it. Same with Brown why? There are fast dudes everywhere that were extremely productive like Maclin. Don’t look at the high school rankings look at the production.

The challenging part of the portal is evaluating Oline. Can a guy from the lower level stay up against SEC lines?

But but i thought it was a dumpster fire…
:flush:

In the portal era, basically everyone is going in the portal every year to at least field offers. However i think this clearly means they will let brown go (good).

I think we will see Anderson come back too and they'll let dingle go, which would also be good.

Letting Brock and barion go will free up good nil especially with deonne presumably leaving for the nfl.

Wasn't Maclin the one who mentioned the poor mentality of the players or lack of leadership on the team and in the locker room?

It has been eluded to that was an issue this year...

Could his return be the result of some of those "bad apples" leaving the team?

I wondered that, too.

Of the 3 WR's I wanted Maclin back the most. I would have taken Key back with a new attitude. I was ready for Brown to leave. He takes up too much NIL for little production and apparently was a locker room problem.

Like portal QBs have been so good for us. A portal QB tells all young QBs that you will never get developed because next year and the year after we will get another portal QB that was not good enough to play where they come from but are better than I think you could be. This is a losing failed strategy. Sorry but I pass on another portal QB.

This is great news. Stoops said there were some players who announced they were leaving that he would re-recruit. I guess JM was one of
Its all about entering the portal, waiting for the bidding war to end and then either leaving or staying.
I dont know why they dont all do it!
Need to make these kids sign multi yr contracts like the pros to fizzle out some of this stuff.

Could be. Players that know better don't want to deal with nonsense. It also could be as simple as he just sees people leaving and more reps available.
